CFI to HSR conversion

My winter project this year is I'm getting rid of my Xram on the vette and going to HSR.
I already am using EBL/Flash, so thats getting sent to BoBr for the multiport upgrade. The HSR was free direct from Holley. So I figured this isn't gonna cost me much to do.
Anyways for now my question is has anyone done this conversion? TBI to HSR? Any advice?

As I start this I'm gonna document everything with a ton of photos to post up here and a couple of other sites.

TIA

Re: CFI to HSR conversion

Does the EBL work the dash properly on a C4? That was the one thing that bothered me, when I swapped to a '730 I lost some of the dash functionality (mpg, fuel averages, range, etc).

Anyhow, there should be more than enough available wires to repin it to MPFI.

The other issue is, you realize the HSR doesn't fit under the stock C4 hood, correct? You have 9" from the top of the china wall in the front of the block to the hood. When I owned a C4, I had built a custom singleplane EFI that worked pretty well given the dimensions of the C4.

On my 2nd gen, I'm actually using an edelbrock 750 carb and intake to break it in. I'll probably end up with a miniram/hsr/ramjet style intake and a vortec PCM eventually when one pops up for sale for a song. I figure for 550hp, around 38-40# injectors.

Then again, I do have a '730 harness and ecm lying around. But speed density and big cams sucks to tune..

I've used the EBL/Flash for a year now and haven't had any problems with my dash except for an ocassional bulb burn out.

I thought my sig posted with my original post but maybe not. I have the greenwood / mold kraft hood scoop on the car so fitment isn't a problem. It gives me an additional 2.5 inches of height. Do I have to still cut the hood? Yes I do but it won't stick past my scoop.

Score. sounds like your all set then.

So the EBL, that communicates properly with the fuel economy/range computer?

That is cool. I know 84-89 uses the same dash so that must mean it works with all those.. 90+ is screwed probably. Oh well.

Sounds like a fun project. Let us know how it turns out.

Re: CFI to HSR conversion

The project for the winter is converting my 84 CFI to an HSR
This is going to be a few week long process. It will be updated along the way.

Parts ( this will be updated as this progresses)
HSR and Fuel Rail kit from Holley- (FREE)
92- LT1 Throttle body 52mm rebuilt - $100 (used)
30lb injectors new O-rings and flow tested $80 (used)
Dynamic EFI's EBL/Flash ECM- Already have sent out for the multi-port upgrade ($25)
Throttle Cable Bracket- FREE
LT1 Fuel pump- Adanced Auto ($89)
TPI Knock Sensor
TPS Sensor
Manifold Air Temp Sensor

Will be listing parts numbers and prices shortly

89-Chevy truck small cap distributor and remote coil
88- Grand Prix-(8) fuel injector connectors ($40, includes the distributor/Coil
)

The CFI ( Actually the X-ram)

Overall Height of the HSR

First Problem, Throttle linkage hits the fuel rail elbow. This is not allow the TB to return all the way. I will have to grind down the inside of the cable guide to allow it to return all the way.

So far I ended up grinding down the elbow so the linkage is now working the way that it should. Went to the junkyard today and picked up the small cap distributor and coil out of a 89 C1500 and the injector connectors came from (2) 88 Grand Prix's. They were on 6 cyl's but need a total of eight connectors. My next step will be to get the wiring harness put together for the injectors

Do you guys have any interest in me posting all the details here?
I've got 6 pages or so of documentation on another site. But will post it here is you have any interest in it.

I'm also looking for a throttle cable that fits the LT1 TB, TV cable for the 700r4. The 84's CFI is not long enough and its throttle cable wont fit the LT TB.

thanks

Re: CFI to HSR conversion

Heres an update for you guys.
It was a very easy conversion. It only took me a while because I was doing some other projects along with it. I have a complete 25 page post on another site with tons of pictures.
My problem right now is start up. I think I am a tooth off on the distributor. But otherwise everything I think came out nice and clean.
Through the process of this I help some other C4 guys out and came up with a TB adapter that allows the C4's hood to close when using the HSR on the car.
Anyways here you go

Re: CFI to HSR conversion

SHE'S ALIVE!
Fired it up today and started easily. (I had my firing order wrong, what a dummy!!)

Anyways the conversion is easy and even easier with the use of the EBL.
I'm in no way a mechanic but anyone that can work with there hands can easily do this project. In all reality this should have taken me less than a week. Since its winter I took my time with it and did some other stuff to it as well while it was apart.

Very nice! Glad you got her started.

Question, that looks like the adjustable Kirban fuel pressure regulator I have. Only problem is I bought it after getting everything installed... Trying to figure out how to get the holley reg. out and get the Kirban in..

The regulator just has two screws on it. One on each side.
My holley regulator was first on then I switched it out to the kirban. Only thing I did was remove the fuel rail, flip it over and replace. Plug and Play

Re: CFI to HSR conversion

You may have to lean the fuel out in your EBL with the 28lb injectors. You can then raise the fuel pressure. I like to run at least 45lbs of pressure with the vac line off. Better atomization. Also, you may find that the motor now likes more ignition timing with the HSR. My Miniram motor ran best with 38 degrees total timing. This was with 11-1 compression.
