Deciding between EFI and carb..
Here's my proposed setup for my new third (when i get her):
358 block
Late model vortec heads - 239/160 @ .500
220/230 @ .50, .510/.510 on 114 or 112 LSA
Either:
Edelbrock performer rpm vortec carb manifold
750 dp carb
Or:
Holley Stealth Ram with vortec provisions
30 lbs injectors
Proper tuning
A few of my friends are running HSRs and they say they're extremely easy to install, however I'm worried about having to hook everything up and go through the process of tuning it by burning chip after chip. That's why I want a carb, just for the simplicity of it.
If this was your setup, what would you run?
Oh btw she's a T-5 -> 4.10 posi with street/strip duties, not a daily driver.

I would run the stealth ram, and pick up a used gen 6 DFI setup. It will drive better part throttle with the fuel injection and you can tune on the fly (no chips to burn).

I replaced a Performer RPM (not air-gap, not vortec) and Holley 750 (3310) with an HSR and Megasquirt in my Chevelle. In the end, they both ran almost identical 1/4 mile times. Carb ran 12.85 @ 106, EFI ran 12.94 @ 106. I had much more time invested in the carb's tune than the EFI.
The EFI starts easy (*esp* when cold), has better part-throttle manners, uses less fuel, certainly has a 'cool' factor, and in my opinion, is quicker/easier to tune than a carb. I'm never going back to a carb and am trying to decide how to fuel-inject my dad's '63 Vette now that i've "seen the light." (tbi or port injection is my dilemma).
There's no doubt that carbs are simpler and effective, it's all a a matter of what you want to achieve.

I am same as chevellefan. I had an RPM air gap manifold and a holley 650 carb. I had the carb tunned before I put it into my car and it ran good but it just had little issues. At first it would not stop desseling out and it didnt want to start when it was chili out. I am now efi and I will never get a carb again.

Megasquirt is a stand-alone engine computer. It can control fuel-only, or fuel & spark. It can be tuned in real-time -- no chip burning. You will need a laptop, though.
Look here... www.megasquirt.info and the support forum, www.msefi.com
I've been running one in my Chevelle since March (2005). I'm running the MS-II processor. I love it.

that seems way too complicated and probably too expensive for me

You can always use a speed density computer and get a stand alone wiring harness. Thats what I did when I switched from mas air to speed density.

what are the advantages of speed denstiy? ive also been thinking of just getting a beefed up tpi to keep things simpler.

I am just now switching to a HSR with a F.A.S.T. speed density system. I have heard nothing but great things about them and it will be a welcome change to my damn carburator.
