383:

we do have a vendor review board, you'd be more likely to get more views there than if the thread stayed here.

as a result, i'm moving this to the vendor board.

thanks

well, this motor is kind of an odd animal......i was just talking to someone else about this...

the same power could be had for considerably less money.

like say 6K for a pretty damn good 383. but this motor was an exercise in excess really.....i bought the absolute best of every part imaginable for this thing right down to the last nut and bolt (nothing bu ARP!) so thats where a lot of the cost is. its not totally necessary for me to have a callies 4340 crank, or manlely sportsmaster h beam 4340 rods......i just wanted them.

for the record golens did not orignally build the motor, they just rebuilt it. so like i said, this motor could be built to have the same power for far far less money, but i never have to say, wow i wish i bought this part instead or that part

Were the times that you ran on street tires or on slicks? Please tell me they were on street tires. If on slicks I am sorry but that sucks. You have to much money and time in that motor for it to run like that even if you are going through the traps in 3rd gear it should still mph more. What rpm does it go through the trap at?

I'm not registered on the site, but my buddy is logged in, and I think I can shed some light here. I am an automotive machinist in KC and we do a lot of performance stuff.

If they didn't bore the cylinders, they didn't use torque plates. A re-hone is just enough to break the glaze so that the new rings may seat. If the bores were pretty slick, the only way to get back the roughness is to hone em out a couple thousandths... which kills your piston/wall clearance. Curious what kind of rings they used, cause cast rings will take some time to seat on this kind of arrangement. Likely that the bores are too smooth to seat quickly. May take some time. Also, depending on EXACTLY how loose the bores were set up initially, the rings may not have enough tension. For example, and engine that's going to run spray, I'll add .001- .0015 depending on the type of pistons, measured piston diameter, rings, bore size, and amount of spray/boost. If the original builder added .0015, and Golens used a standard ring pack, you have lost ~.004 of end gap. Could be a problem if the rings were already on the loose side, especially with the slick bores. Also, if the second gap was set too tight, you could have a problem.

I'm amazed that they had to line hone a block that lost a piston. I've seen some pretty beat up stuff come in, rarely is line honing necessary.

Regardless, it sounds like they do some sloppy work.

I had talked to Golen's and came very close to getting a motor from them. Some of the numbers they were comming up with didn't sound right. I live very close to them also. Were do you live.
I found a guy that does great work, his name is Scott Adams of Adams performance engines. If you need any work done you might want to talk to him. He is in Billerica.
