Carbon fiber driveshaft?
I'm looking to get a new driveshaft. Anyone here have a carbon fiber driveshaft? Ive heard 5% horsepower and better vibration dampening qualities from these carbon fiber dirveshafst vs. the aluminum. Is the $800 worth it, or should i go with an aluminum? Doug

well... a downside would be it'll shatter a helluva lot quicker than an aluminum one...
$800 seems fairly reasonable for it though, but I'd probably research a bit more first before comitting yourself to one (unless of course...they have a life time warranty)

check it. Not much hp gain, but better for critical speed of the driveshaft and vibration.

Do you still have the stock steel d/s now? My 87 would have a slight vib at about 80 mph w/ the 2.73 gears. Then I got an aluminum d/s w/ damper from a 00' and I don't notice the vibs at all. I've had the car up to about 100mph w/ the 3:42's and haven't noticed the shake.
$800 is a lot of money... I guess you need to decide what type of performance level you expect out of your car. IMO, The carbon fiber would be overkill for almost anything. For half the price of that shaft, you can get a steel or aluminum shaft that can handle around 200mph. I worked in the propshaft group at American Axle and Manufacturing for a term. My big project was assisting the development of our "Performance. Products." propshaft that we will be supplying to Tex Racing, who will supply to Nascar. Our shafts are made of 4", .065" wall DOM 1020 Steel tubing and have a critical speed of around 13,000 rpm. That’s 260mph w/ 6500 engine rpm, a .50 overdrive and 3:73 gears. Our first race was at Daytona this year. Anyway, you can do w/ out the carbon fiber and the price tag pretty easily.

Well, my stock diveshaft seems really balanced - i havent noticed a major problem to 135 mph. (i noticed it at 115 on my '88 iroc). I have just heard about how smooth the carbon fiber shafts really are. Im not too worried about critical speed since i dont plan on going any faster than i already have. I realise that a properly balanced driveshaft of any material will be smooth. Overkill? Maybe, but so is having a 13 second (or lower) car for street use to begin with.

13's excessive? Nah... Excessive is the 9 second range I don't think I'll be happy till mine is too fast for the street.
