Whant a Good Ignition Box?

I'm Planning on getting an ignition box but can't decide which one.

Which do you think is best for my 91RS TBI 305 5.0? MSD, Crane etc?

see my signature...

Thanks

You'd be wasting your money, under like 350 hp, not needed, just buy some new plugs, normal wires and make sure coil is good to go and let that be it. People with stock 305 and 350's buy these ignition boxes for looks i guess, there is no reason for one.It would be a waste.Take the $100 and put it on a set of headers to go with your catback that you already got

I don't think I have over 350 horse and I noticed 2-3 mpg increase with an MSD 6AL. Didn't notice any more powere that I could feel but the gas mileage improvement was welcome.

Tech Tip of the Month (March): MSD boxes do NOT make you go faster!

dont waste the money. Get something else you can appreciate like a nice steak dinner or something.

Just a reminder not everyone is looking just for a power increase.
Like IROCZ88 said he has seen a 2-3 mpg increase in fuel consumption, that there is enough to make me get it. Plus if you have a modified intake and need more spark at higher RPMs it helps.

Just my thoughts

Just to actually answer the question, i was very impressed with the accel 300+ ignition. I believe it comes with the coil and wiring harness for the same price as most other boxes alone. No wires had to be cut or spliced, the box was relatively flat for easy placement, throttle response improved and the engine weemed way smoother at higher rpms. I put one in a friends GTA, and was very impressed, i would use the same for my car. Pn another note, oi saw a comparison chart of Accel, Holley, MSD, and Crane, that showed accel and holley as the two best all around boxes because of longer spark duration and more spark energy, and i few other things, but can't quite remember.

Car Craft has just done a comparison of all the digital ignition boxes in the June issue. They all make the same power.

They look cool under the hood and all but for a fairly mild engine it isn't really needed. Put the money in headers or a new TBI manifold.

I have heard people who have upgraded not only got better mileage but there car was easier to start. My car take about 7-10 turns of the motor before it will start up. I have been tracking this problem for over a year now and the list of replacement parts made is way too long to list here. I am considering buying a Crane Cams HI-6 setup with the coil they recommend. I like the Crane setup because you have a truly adj. rev limiter and the circuitry looks like it is made better. Plus Crane has always given me excellent customer service.

Hey '87FAKE-IROC-Z, where did you mount the box? I have a black interior and I am thinking of mounting mine on the pass. side of the console kinda under the dash. A guy did this with a red interior with a MSD box and it looked like a good idea and the install was really clean.

The cooler the place it's mounted, the less likely you'll have it die on you.Installing it in the interior is best if you can!Heat Kills Electronics!

I just have in mounted on top of the battery for now, I havn't picked a permanent spot. It is working out fine right there, it gets plenty of air flow and is easily accessed.

i am not raggin on tpi or tbi, but between me and all my friends and their motors, almost everybody runs an msd box. the problem with a board that is 90% TBI/TPI is that nobody's motor really likes to rev over 4500-5000 rpm. a near stock ignition can handle that kind of duty, the box seems to help people out with carbed setups and aftermarket fuel injection setups running upwards of 6k rpm. so basically i guess i am saying take the money and buy yourself headers or gears.

What if ur gonna run nitrous though. I already upgraded my ignition with MSD (everything) but wondering if I should do the MSD box as well.

It's an especially good idea if you're running nitrous.
An MSD 6AL will allow you to add a single or multiple step retard, which will back off the timing when the nitrous is applied.
This is nice insurance in addition to the rev-limiter.
I believe the new MSD Digital 6 has this feature built in.

I got the MSD digital 6 when I got my Nitrous kit. I noticed my idle was a little better, but not to warrant the cost. I just got it for the timing retard and rev-limiter.

I have the Crane Hi-6 Box and coil. I will say that the spark energy is amazingly better bright blue spark with a loud crack, verses stock dull blue with a pop. It was so easy to install hardest part was tucking all the wires into Flex-loom, thats how easy it was. Make sure you get the kit with the pre made harness adapters for your application. It definitely starts easier 3 cranks instead of 8-9.
