Need help deciding on heads

Building up a new 350...Trying to decide which heads to get. Im on a budget...so i need the most bang for my buck...What kind of heads would you guys recommend for a carbed 350 to push about 425-440 horsepower on a budget? Should i go aftermarket? Or should i try to pick up some used heads and port them? OR maybe some used ported aftermarket heads? Thanks guys.

Car: 88 IROC-Z
Engine: L98
Transmission: TH350
Axle/Gears: 3.45
I am not sure about horsepower but I know that stock small block chevy heads that are ported and polished can make 400ft lbs of torque. My friend has desktop dyno 2000 and he has used stock heads and made 400ft lbs easily with the right camshaft and carb. If you want to go aftermarket those Dart Iron Eagle heads are a good deal. My friend is porting a set right now that I am going to put on my car hopefully this spring. They have a 79% exhaust to intake flow right out of the box but can use some hand porting to clean up the casting flash.

Not sure how you define budget, but i love my Trick Flows, and there are a lot of alum. heads out there at about the $1000 mark: AFR, Edelbrock, Brodix, GM FastBurns(?), etc.

For a better price, look at something like the Dart Iron Eagles - you have your choice of angle/straight plug, 64/72 cc, and 180-230 cc runners, and valve size for about $800 assembled. World Sportsman II's may also be a consideration in that price range.

Oh yeah forgot trick flow makes inline valve heads too. I'm sure they are as good as any street head.

I run the twisted wedge version and when all is said and done, they aren't any cheaper than AFR's. They work great though.

Oh yea, forgot them... Judging from there web site, they're just out for performace type stuff (nothing wrong with that mind you!) For smog legal i would look at TF and Edelbrock, although, it's not really gonna matter unless they ask for an exemption #. And if they do, hand'em one for Edelbrock or TF

Josh, from the sounds of 400hp, sounds like you aren't looking for an emmissions friendly motor? I know that CA is a PITA about that so just asking.

Bang for the buck, Vortec heads CANNOT be beat. at about $400 for the pair, you can get 350-360hp from the OUT OF THE BOX (ie NOT ported) with just new valve springs ($40max) and a CompCams XE262 or XE268 camshaft. Now, you want 400hp, so you may have to do a little porting and go to a bigger cam and/or 1.6 rockers, screw-in studs/guideplates, but still, the entire package of heads/cam/lifters/springs/Vortec intake/gaskets is cheaper than most pairs of aluminum heads alone. If you have to add EGR, there are kits for that, too, and I understand that the EGR kits are CA friendly, if you do it right!!!

Search the web for "Goodwrench Quest" and you'll find a site with CHP articles (5) that shows a Vortec head buildup. 400+hp, mild porting/cutbacks, Comp XE268 with Comp 1.6 roller tip rockers, nice exhaust, Performer RPM intake, 750 cfm Holley, OOBox GM HEI distributor. IMO, if you put a Comp XE roller cam in that motor, or any other roller cam with similar duration to the XE268 with MORE lift from the roller help, you can get 425hp...

EDIT: here's the site:
