my new "ss" hood

Well, here it is....I just recieved it today and figured I'd put it on to make sure it fit right before painting. I think it looks mighty nice and was well worth the $. I'm also proud to say I've got the first one in town, what do you guys think?

I can't see spending $400 on a hood + at least $200 on paint because it 'looks cool'. Fact is - its not functional. Then again - I hate the louvers on the IROCs and the blisters on the 91-92s. Its just ornamentation and serves no purpose. It says "Hey - look at me! I think I'm cool". At least with a cowl hood there is a purpose - using the high pressure air at the cowl to cool the engine bay and remove heat. I don't mean to rain on your parade - just expressing my opinion. SLP made a great call when they introduced these hoods as functional on the 4th gens. Non-functional hoods are a farse and come close to being rice.

Weight reduction is the common excuse. @25lbs from the frontend. Cool. But, its like a ***** putting on a carbon fiber hood and driving around town.

Hey I've heard of people cutting out the scoop and making it functional.

You think If I took some old seat foam, sprayed some WD40 in it and put it in the opening and secured it with zip ties through some drilled holes in the SS cowl, it would be worth 30 RWHP?

I disagree Trax. Ain't nothing wrong with making you car look good. What's the point in having a car that looks just like the other 200,000 built just like it? If you can make the hood somewhat functional even more bonus points.

Trax,
I'll be waiting to see your Camaro without the ground effects and not have any kind of wing or spoiler on the back. Hey - it's less frontal area, so you'll have a faster top end too! He he he.

Excellent. I'll be removing my ground effects, louvers, spoiler, and pimp valve covers ASAP.

I have to disagree with you Trax. If appearance really didnt matter and all you wanted was function, wouldnt you be driving a Mustang instead?

As for the hood, dont really like it. Of course its better than the lame late ram-air TA style hood I saw on a Camaro, that really looked stupid.

But they CAN be functional...I have my air cleaner height set to where cool air blows straight onto the filter. Also by doing a little trimming on the back part of the cowl, you can make use of the low pressure area as well...plus it lookers meaner than H3ll...a lot better than any 2" cowl induction hood in my opinion. Guess I should remove my rear seats since they aren't "functional"...they are just adding more weight to my "*****" IROC! I suppose the 91-92 Z28 high-rise spoilers are "*****" as well? Man.......I need to get a "Powered by VTEC" sticker for my Camaro.

I disagree as well. To each his own, but for an SS style hood, which I assume we're talking about, to be considered borderline rice when put on a thirdgen is some what obsurd. As a plus, the weight reduction, which reduces more like 40-50 lbs compared to a stock Iroc hood more than makes up for it's non-functional property by giving you more 's during hard cornering. But then again a strut tower brace could probably do that too. Oh yeah, you mean farce, don't you??

Maybe I'm mistaken but doesn't the SS hood have the same cowl effect as a standard cowl hood? Look at the back where it comes to the firewall. Looks just like a standard 2.5" cowl hood to me .
It's been talked about before but the actual SS hoods being functional is a joke all together. Even if it was completely open, it's still too low profile to pick up any "useful" air. Why do you think all snorkels on drag cars stick up OFF the surface of the hood. You're probably making it harder for the car to breath if you just had it sucking through that front slit they call an opening.
Looks bad *** but I'd block it off and use the cowl effect!

The funny thing is ... I was joking about this whole thing. I was bored and wanted to see what people's responses would be. Sometimes I get frisky. This is one of those times. I like the 'SS' hood ... roflmfao.

My only disagreement here is hood weight. Along with a couple others we weighed a stock hood vs. a fiberglass hood. The difference was 26lb for a hood with hinges/latch. You wouldn't save 40lb unless you pinned it on.

SS Hoods are a nice addition. They look mean and IMHO improve the look of your thirdgen.

you do get another 2.5 inch of clearance space and is does have a small cooling effect when you put the hood on..

Interesting.

I needed my hood, because I could not shut the stock hood with what I had.
It weighs a lot less than the stock hood, I had a clearance issure, and I want cold air induction. Right now, it is functional and serves a purpose. I could not use my stock hood at all.
I can make the RamAir functional as well, and that will be done in the near future. I am wondering why he said that the RamAir hood can't be made functional when it can?
Nothing bogus about it.

Heh heh. I like our stock hoods better. (early Z28 hood and the louvered 1) I just wish the louvers opened and closed or something like that, besides just looking good. Might be good for cooling. Any ideas??

But that does look pretty good.

Hey IROCZTWENTYGR8,
me and my dad are in the middle of making my iroc hood functional. we took the louvers off and cut the metal plates under the louver of and are trying to fabricate the louvers so that they will be open but still have that stock look. so far it seems like it will work ill post picks when i am done.

I wonder if you could hook it to the throttle cable to activate the louvers.

example, for a carb setup, mash it far enough for the secondaries to open, hot air jumps out.

looks like Ill be getting a new hood soon too...

never let anyone else shut your hood...

I usually dont cuz you have to let it down...hold the latch in and close...

well the other day...i was replacing the tail lights and letting the engine cool (hood up)

as i got closer to finishing the lights...my girl says.."i closed the hood for ya"

I kind of glance up and see its down and figured she shut ti all the way...

well I fu=inished the tail light and went in for dinner....it was dark now and i totally forgot to check the hood...and we went for a drive....

well i turn right out on to the road and not 10- seconds into the drive....wham! the hood flies upI slow her down quickly and throw the 4 ways on...good thing there wasnt alot of traffic.

the hood was straight up....no longer slightly curved...a flat hood.

the hingrees are all bent to...I was furious of course.

least it didnt hit the windshield. and a lot better than my hood on my 89 firebird which flew right off the car twice...hit the grass once and was ok...second time it hit the road and bent in two...no luck with hoods im tellin ya

I believe the crossfires used an electric solenoid to open the flaps, much like the old camaros and chevelles with cowl induction.
