1/2 hour engine cleaning plan.....look
If you have a dirty engine and want to get it clean, if it is grease, oil, dirt or all of the above I have a quick way to clean alot of it off in 1/2 hour....this is not an all out engine cleaning program....Here is what I did with before/afterpics
1) After I changed the oil to 20w-50 to subside the oil burning problem I decided that the engine was way to dirty to look at anymore....I bought Castrol Super Clean in he spray bottle(you can get it at Wal-Mart for $3 in the auto section)....I put the WHOLE bottle on a COLD, DRY engine(maysure to get down along sie and behind the engine and shoot on on from different angles so you can get into places that you can't but just standing in front of the car) Let is sit for about 2-3 min and took my garden hose with a pistol grip attachment thing and sprayed it off well, make sure you get it all off. Now take a towel and wipe off an dirt that the hose could not blast off(you should only have to wipe not scrub). Now take some alum poslish(Wal-Mart) and clean up the A/C stuff. Now get a bottle of Son-Of-A-Gun(Wal-Mart) and spray all the rubber and plastic and wipe down, use lots of this stuff. Here are the pics......
Oh and take of big plastic parts because this stuff(Super Clean) likes to eat at it and make it dull.....
I have tryed Simple Green and it did not do nearly as good a job as this....Same thing with Gunks, Engine Brite.....they maybe good for keeping a already cleaned engine clean but not a really dirty one.

Just a little FYI,
The Castrol stuff is the same stuf as Power Clean that they sell at Autozone.
Castrol bought the patten from Power Clean.
You can buy a whole gallon of this stuff at Autozone for ~$5. And it's concentrated. If you mix it 50/50, then you're really buying 2 gallons.
Something else it works great on is wheels. If you do the 50/50 mix, then spray it on and imediately scrub and rinse, then you can say bye-bye to the brake dust.
But DO NOT leave it sit for any length of time (same with the Castrol stuff). Otherwise you can say bye-bye to the clear coat or paint, or anything like that on your wheels.
I used it on the white wheels of my 95 Monte Carlo. They looked like I soaked them in bleach. Before that I tried cleaner wax, mineral spirits, etc. and nothing would make them white again.
And your car looks great man. Did you also use Armor All or something on the black stuff?

I used the Castrol Super Clean on my engine bay before I rattle canned it. I will agree with camaro6spd, that stuff works great. I bought the gallon, and MAKE SURE IT IS DILUTED. As was stated by AJ_92RS, it will soften paint rather quickly. I learned this by cleaning the under side of my hood.

I'm kinda on the fence with hosing down the engine compartment. On my 89, I've never had a problem with it. But on my 86, I've had the bearings on two smog pumps, and one alternator freeze up after hosings. And I definitely don't like using anything that eats aluminum. I've always had good luck with Simple Green, but lately, use this stuff called Purple Tiger or something like that. The only thing, is that the purple stuff seems to react with Jet-Hot... I may have to find something else to use..

when i did mine with simple green i got many compliments on it. simply sprayed with simple green and then attacked it with the pressure washer.. hehe. afterwards i high temp clear coated the entire engine bay. no problems with relays/fuses or anything and it looks great.

We put castrol superclean on my dads blazer one time. Never again will I do that to a engine compartment (just from fear). We replaced the timing chain in the blazer so we painted all the covers and some other parts up to make it look nice. after we were done there was some oil and grime in the rest of the engine compartment so we used superclean. When we sprayed off the superclean most of the freash paint we put on in the engine compartment went with it. The paint had set for about 2-3 days I don't know if that had something to do with it or it was just the superclean. Needless to say there was many strong words and things kicked arround becuz that stuff. If you use this stuff (for people just trying it) DONT leave it on for very long. I use the cd2 engine detailer package with engine degreaser to clean it.

for a quick little detail job under the hood, try the next time you spray your wheels with tire foam use it under the hood. It doesnt dry the belt out and makes the hoses shine. Keep a towel handy to wipe any chrome off. It lifts the road dust and looks good on the black plastic too. and it dont hurt the paint.

engine cleaner
Thos eengines look great! I only used Formula 88 degreaser from Discount Auto Parts. It is great and is good for rims too! I am just afraid of wetting something that shoulddn't get water near it. I have washed down my engine about 10 times since I bought it in October of 1998. So far nothing, but the starter gets screwed up about every 8 months, maybe the water got to it? Andy
