I have a 88 GTA that I am looking at putting a new ignition system in. I was wondering if any of you have an opinion on which is the best ignition to go with. I have heard alot about both the jacobs and msd. Have any of you compared these two products? If so which do you suggest and why? Any help yopu can give me on this topic is greatly appreciated.

Both are very good systems. I'd say get the better priced one. One thing about MSD's though, I think it might bypass the ignition module, which would be a good thing. I could be wrong, that's just what I heard though. Either way, both are good and fairly easy to install.

I've been happy with my Jacobs. You can buy direct from them, but I think you can better pricing from Summit or Jegs.

I just installed the MSD 6AL. The improvement was noticeable immediately. Best improvement in performance for a 2hr/$200 investment I've seen. I'm only sorry I didn't do it a long time ago.

I've owned both on the same car, so I believe I can quantify track results. I currently run a 6AL, but not by choice. I needed a programmable boost retard module. MSD is the only manufacturer that has such a beast, so I had to remove my Pro-Street.

Track Results:
Unfortunately, I made two changes. Besides going to the Pro-Street to the 6AL, I also changed the blower pulley (2-psig more, to 12-psig). I was expecting to see at least a 0.2 second improvement. Months before when I went from 8-psig to 10-psig, I gained 0.2 seconds. Therefore to go to 12-psig, I felt another 0.2 second gain was reasonable. Was I shocked to see that I did not gain anything. I have to deduce that making more boost caused my car to go quicker, but it was offset by the lack of performance of the 6AL.

I am a 6AL user that would go back to a Pro-Street in a heartbeat if Jacobs introduces an electronic, programmable boost timing control.

I also run the 6AL I didnt notice any differances on the way the car ran but I was getting awsome MPG with it.

I never had the 6AL myself, but I had a few friends with them and they had nothing but trouble. When they worked, they were good, but of the 4 friends that had them, at least 2 had units that crapped out and had to be replaced at least once. These units were not abused, but failed anyway. Seems like either MSD's products really suck from the get-go or they can't hold up to the heat and vibration under a car's hood.

I never heard any bad things about any Jacobs prdsuct except for the harder than average wiring setup.

I use an Accel 300+ on my Camaro. Accel makes a programable timing retard for the 300+ (in case others are unaware).
