Spark Plug Wires

I have a few questions.....
1) I just put in my new 305 and it came with new stock plug wires.....are they good enough for something up to 300 hp? Is it worth the upgrade to 8 mm.
2) What do you think of Summit Brand TPI Wires?
3) Did you guys that still have manifolds(not getting headers right sway) have to make your own or did they come to the proper size.

I put Accel 8mm wires on my 305tbi, stock manifolds, used straight plugs ends to get the wires out past the AIR tubes and such. They didn't cost anymore than stock replacement wires and look a lot better.

just got accels for my car, they look pretty good, price is not bad at all. even come with a crimping tool. I recommend them, you cut them to how long you want them, not what the factory thinks(and the factory was pretty bad about the moroso wires I got, # was tight from distributer to plug, and the others were long enough that they would get burned by the exhaust manifolds(2 of them got burned, but the others were too long too) Go with something you can cut, it's a little more work but it's better in the long run.

Ive tried the ACCEL superstock 8mm wires, and ended up switching back to the factory wires. About a month after i installed the ACCELs, the engine began missfiring. One of the plug wires had dried out, because of the intense heat of the engine compartment and cracked, allowing the spark to escape before it reached the plug (and, yes, i did wire them out of reach of the exhaust). I switched back to the factory wires (which were also 8mm), and didnt have a problem for over 2 years. I then decided to try aftermarket again and purchased a set of MSD 8.5mm wires. Now i am having the same problem with them. I am again going to switch back to the factory wires. I believe GM Performance Parts has larger diameter plug wires than the factory replacements, which should also work good. I dont believe in aftermarket ignition parts, because i think they were designed for cars that were only used occasionally, and not driven daily. They were made to provide the most horsepower they could, with reliability an afterthought. With the long trips and frequent stops (allowing the engine bay to heat soak), of a daily driver vehicle, the aftermarket ignition parts cannot stand up to the abuse. GM builds its parts to withstand the worst-case scenario, and can take the punishment. Anyone else have this problem with aftermarket wires? Also, i have about 325hp (flywheel) and i use the stock plug wires, cap, and rotor with no problem. I cant see a vehicle gaining hp with just a wire swap.

I've got the Taylor Spiro Pro blue silicone 8's. They work GREAT. smoother idle, no misfires, better throttle response.

I've tried the msd wires and they only lasted me a year. But I have a very hot ignition system(mallory, msd6a, and jacobs ultra coil). The msd wires got so hard you could hold them by one end like a stick. The Napa I work at sells belden replacement sets. Well I went and ordered a set of belden race wires in a universal set. They are really nice...expensive though. After 3 years now they are still soft and working great. They are even staying fairly clean.

I tried accels on my chevelle. I didnt have very good luck with them either.

I got the app-specific Taylor Spiro-Pro wires for 305TBIs when I had manifolds. When I switched to headers, I kept the wires, and they're still fine, even though two of them are straight-boots and come only an 1/8th of an inch from the header. That was a long time ago. No fried wires yet. The Taylors are supposed to be good up to 600°. And no RF noise in my system, either. Good wires.

Spark Wires...

If you are worried about melting your wires I would suggest using a heat shield boot...I have used these in the past and they work great. You can get them anywhere you buy aftermarket wire...

i had the taylor-spiro 8mm.........they seem to work alright, when i had N20 installed they replaced them with MSD 8.5; definately notice a difference in quality and size.......as far as performance, i have stock ignition so theirs only so much it can do. but, they work so i happy.

I am running the Accel 8.8s. I am burning/melting through the plug boots on a few of them. I had a voltage leaking problem with my last engine and these wires. Not sure if it was a grounding problem or an ignition problem. Not sure if it still is there, havn't checked at night.
I am switching to Taylor wires pretty soon. I wouldn't recommend the Accels.
Also everything else on my ignition is stock and is supporting some good hp.

I've had MSD SuperConductors for 2 years and just got a new set for Christmas. No complaints at all.

I have the Summit cut to fit set with 90* boots. The Summit wires are made by Taylor and then re-stamped for Summit. I also have SLP 1¾ headers and with the 90* boot no burnt boots yet.
