WHAT 1.6 ROLLER ROCKERS WORK WITH CENTERBOLT COVERS?

I would like to upgrade to 1.6 rockers on my
'89 Formula 350. I heard that the stock valve
covers might not work with these rockers. They might hit the covers. Any suggestions on what I should do. I heard that Crane makes a rocker that will work with no mods, is that true?
Thanks in advance!

Go to your Chevy dealer and order 1.6 roller rockers for a ZZ4. They will clear centerbolt valve covers and are self aligning. Got em on my ZZ4 and love em!

You can use your stock valve covers. I even left the baffles in mine. Cranes 1.6's will fit with no modification needed to the heads or valve covers.

Get your 1.6's rollers from paceparts.com. They're only $280...

Screamingchicken: What in God's name are you talking about? the Crane rollers I have are all aluminum , full roller. They are the gold extruded race rockers. The paceparts.com I recommended are the same. Actually I believe they are Crane.

Mine are $300 new. If I remember correctly, the Comp ones I were looking at (1.6 self aligning centerbolt chromemoly) were $364 from summit.

If you have cast iron heads make sure to check the pushrod to "guideplate" hole. 1.6 ratio moves the pushrod closer to the valve and it might interfere. Also if the cam isn't stock make sure to check retainer to valveguide clearance. Forget coilbind.

I found this out the hard way. I was wondering why my rockers were noisy. I gave them the 1/2 turn... Hmmm... then there loose. Retighten. Over&over... Here it was yanking the pressed in rockerstuds out. Amazingly no carnage in the process.

I tapped the stud holes after flushing out the antifreeze from the oilpan (suprises lurk behind the exh. studs) and luckily with stiffer springs installed +.050" with shorter retainers i got away without taking the heads off for machining the valveguides down. It was a learning exp. And think.. It's only a ZZ4 cam with STOCK 1.5 roller rockers and I had all these problems...

My car came with the 1.52 roller rocker arms from comp cams and they have no problems under the valve covers, so I am sure the 1.6s work the same way!

I installed 1.6 ratio roller tip rockers froc Crane last year. They interfered with my center bolt vavle covers. Went back to Summit and exchanged them for 1.6 ratio roller tip rockers from CompCams. No problem with these rocker arms.

The Crane rockers are a little bigger than the CompCams rockers, both were 1.6 ratio.

The CompCams rockers are much more sturdy than the Cranes and should have less deformation. If you looked at the two types side by side, you would understand what I said.

These are steel stamped roller tip rocker arms and sell for about $140 at Summit Racing.

Thanks everybody, for your advice!
One more question. Can self aligning rockers
be used with guide plates and hardened pushrods?

Thanks again.

Self aligning= NO guideplates
Non self aligning= USE guideplates and hardened pushrods.

FWIW, I'm using Crane Gold narrow body, 1.6 non-self aligning roller rockers under the stock center bolt covers with no problems.

Of course you CAN use self-aligning rockers with guideplates and hardened pushrods. You just don't HAVE to, that's all...
