CRC Belt Conditioner?
Has anyone ever used this stuff? At first it seemed like a good idea. You spray it on like regular belt dressing and then it dries real tacky like a fresh coat of paint or coagulated soda.
Before leaving work I decided to pop my hood and re-adjust the power steering belt since it had alot of slack from not being re-tensioned after I replaced it. To finish up the job I sprayed the belts and pulley grooves with that CRC conditioner.
As soon as I started my engine, I immediately flipped out because there was a LOUD horrendous noise that sounded like a can full of loose change was being turned with a slipping belt when you revved the engine. I spent 30 minutes out back of Advance Auto before going home probing everything with a stethoscope and removing the belts because I thought the timing chain was about to let go. Finally figured out it was nothing serious when I removed all the belts and started the engine with only the crank pulley spinning and it got dead quiet.
It did it all the way home progressively getting quieter and had ceased about 90% by the time I parked.
Seemed like a great idea at first but damn, I wasn't expecting all that. Now that I think about it, wouldn't the added tackiness of the belts make it alot easier for them to attract debris?
