simple question ive heard alot of mixed opinions
so here it is... do K&N's filter poorly over stock paper?

Re: K&N air filters
No, if properly cleaned and oiled they last forever, actually test have shown they definitely flow more air, and filter better as thet get dirtier. I have a set that fit our cars if you are interested, used for one summer, before my engine swap. $30 plus shipping.... PM me if interested...

Re: K&N air filters
i put a K&N drop in filter in my bird back in the fall, i notice that it did filter and flow a lot better that junk paper no name filter that was in there. Just wish i had put it in when i dyno'd my car, prop would of had 190+hp and 260+tq at the wheels if that filter was in there.. think i bought mine from amazon, for like $35 with free shipping... lol hope this helps

Re: K&N air filters
While k&ns do flow better from my testing, they generally let a lot of fine particulate in compared to a stock paper filter. If you look inside the intake duct a few thousand miles after you install a k&n, there will be a coat of fine dust in there.
As far as teh engine goes, it does seem to have a negative impact on the cylinders as my engine has a small ammount of fine scoring on the cyl. walls from dirt getting in. If your running in dusty conditions or driving the car a lot, you shouldnt use them. If I have to drive my car a long distance, Ill pop them out and use the stock paper elements instead.
I dont use them in my DD as they just dont filter as well. That, and a stock engine doesnt really need the extra airflow capacity.

Re: K&N air filters
For the airflow of a stockish engine, paper works fine; you won't notice the difference with a K&N until air demand is higher. As for letting particulates past; well, if a K&N is good enough for David Vizard, it's good enough for me.

Re: K&N air filters
I've yet to hear about any K&N catching on fire, but I suppose anything's possible. It's those "triangles of death" Edelcrock foam air cleaners that burn nice and hot after a backfire....they get saturated with gas and catch on fire...I unfortunately know this first-hand...

I guess your right, I've built and installed alot of engines and they've never back fired on me, upon first startup, unless some idiot put the dizzy in wrong.....LOL, sounds like you've had that problem???

Re: K&N air filters
Its something to do with the oil used on the K&N's iv read about it before, its more fire **** then a paper element supposably... This is what a read and seen pictures from but never cared to research it. At any rate i just don't get why people invest tons of money into a car and don't have a fire extinguisher.

Re: K&N air filters
If by plasma cutter your referring to cutting the back of the cowl scoop out? I'd just take a bigger drill bit & drill out each hole to be bigger, but still retain some structure in there.

Re: K&N air filters
Well, mine caught on fire when I stupidly floored it when the engine was stone cold right after start-up. I guess you guys are able to tune your engines perfectly so this would never happen to you....but for the vast majority of us, it happens. But I'm talking about the foam triangle of death, not K&N....no "fire extingisher" here - although not a bad idea....
I have the same cowl hood...I was contemplating opening mine up also. ronusmcmma - I was wondering how those dashmats look...yours looks fine. I just might get one myself after seeing yours! Clean interior BTW...

Re: K&N air filters
When I was a teenager, i watched a friends 69 Grand Prix model J burn to the ground from a backfire w/ one of those triangle of death filters. No fire ext. on a bridge, it was sad. All that i was stating earlier that cars aren't supposed to backfire if running properly and driven right. Flooring a cold engine, not a good idea.
I had a backfiring problem on a couple of cars, due to carbeurator and timing, and valvetrain issues. Like I said earlier if a car is backfiring that bad or at all for that matter, be sure to fix it......

Its really made well and is protecting a like new dash.If you look in the photo above you can see were a sheet of felt is tucked in under the cover to completely cover the ends of the dash.Thats the only problem I had with mine and was a easy fix.Just pushed the cover forward on the dash a little and it tucks between the dash and windshield. No tape or Velcro needed.
