Gear drive timing?
Is there that great of an advantage to something like this or no?

This is the one I'm looking at, but a friend of mine told me he had put a similar system in his old camaro and noticed a huge difference in power, but another of my friends told me I'm not going to notice any gain from installing something like this. Anyone on here have experience using one of these in your cars? I'm driving an 89 Camaro RS and I'm slowly rebuilding the engine.

good , yes . noisy , yes . practical , on a street car no , on a race car , yes . on a dual use car a good timing chain & gear set-up is the way to go . what ever you decide , good luck .

Alright, well thanks for the input guys! from the sound of it I'll probably hold off on this as something down the road if I don't like the noise my car's making.

Re: Gear drive timing?
I think they are good all around
More Acurate Timing
Less Chance of timing chain stretch or brake
Yes they do increase the power but not enough to feel it.
they noisy ones sounds like a super charger
quite ones still make noise becuase gear to gear travel is going to hum a lil bit
I think its a good investment especially for a street machine

Re: Gear drive timing?
I hated mine. They felt like they had way too much slop in the. When everything was installed you could jiggle the cam +- like 2 or 4* without even adjusting anything. I have mine for sale and put a double roller in.

Re: Gear drive timing?
um- did anyone read the part about not applicable on factory chevy hyd. roller cam equipped engines? and it's not recommended for engines that are computer controlled w/knock sensors. Not saying it cant be used though because myself and others have done it but there has to be a good reason they recommend not doing it.

Re: Gear drive timing?
The reason they don't recommend it is because the shock from the crank gets passed onto the cam. The gears don't "give" like a chain does. It could eventually lead to problems down the road. I also read somewhere that it's not a great idea to use them if you're going over 7k RPMs, not sure if it's true or not though. Good luck
