anybody use this radar detector?

Hey guys, I got a BEL 855STi for free from a family friend and I was just wondering if anybody has any tips or instructions for it since it didn't come with instructions. It seems to work, I just got it today and it chirped a few times while driving on the highway but I dunno what these "Ka 1"s and stuff that appears on the screen mean. I just slow down when it starts making noise lol. And how is it? Is it accurate? Thanks!

Re: anybody use this radar detector?

I use a Bel 995 and I'm very pleased with it, I've picked up Ka band from around or over a mile away. Around here, Ka band is police radar, K band is either speed signs or automatic opening doors, and x band is misc. garbage. Your detector is quite a bit older and they've come out with different bands now. I've even seen Ku band, which is usually used in Europe. Anyway, I'd listen when it says Ka anything.

Re: anybody use this radar detector?

You guys do know that by the time it picks up a radar signal, it could already be too late?

I see it as a nice gimmick. Minus the ones that warn you of fixed radar/ladar locations. That is if you live in a area with them.

Only way to beat those tickets, drive the speed limit, or drive in a way it doesn't look like you're speeding/driving recklessly (ie safe lane changes, stay in one lane except to pass, don't pass like if you were racing in NASCAR). Washington State is a stickler about speeding, yet I'm never pulled over doing 5-10 mph over.

Just my two cents.

Only if you have a cheapy. The good ones will either tell you a ways back before they've got you, or let you know that there's radar ahead while they're targeting a car a ways ahead of you. It does depend on how they're using the radar. You get what you pay for too. With laser, if you don't have a jammer, you're screwed. Jammers are illegal in several states, including mine.

Also, I'm pretty sure they are suppose to get visual verification before they pull you over. A good detector can let you know before they spot you.

Yup.

Radar detectors for the most part - are useless here in Toronto now. They've come up with ways to get around them.

Re: anybody use this radar detector?

Radar detectors are only a tool, not prevention. As for lasers. the officer has to actually
manually point the gun like a gun. They have to be stationary with no obstruction. Radar detection can work if they are hitting other vehicles and you detect them. But as one post said, don't speed you won't have a problem. I personally just like to know where they are! I have a bel 940 and it works great. I also have two buddies that are county and state police, and they keep me informed with the latest and greatest. Most in Wi. anyways use the Ka band, and leave it on all the time.

Yup, that's the thing. Ka band is "instant-on" radar, meaning that they can basically clock you, and just you, if your alone, in a couple seconds. Fortunately, at least around here, they usually leave it on and use it as normal radar.

Even if they were using it like instant-on, a good detector could detect the first presence of it when they target another car a ways away, allowing you to look and slow down. The voltage meter on mine saved me from frying my electronics one day, not that it has anything to do with this discussion.

If you were driving down the freeway doing 75-80, while traffic is doing 70, and you pass a cop who is using his radar, you will be the most likely to receive a ticket. In the same situation, but with a decent detector, it will sound off before he sees you and you will have plenty of time to reduce your speed to the flow of traffic. You need to act fast though lol.

I rarely see laser around here, but that may very well change....time to leave California ! Just kidding.

As red rock said, they are just tools. They aren't fool proof. You have to use your head and be aware in order to not get a ticket. If you don't work with the detector and just rely on it (or if you have a pos; don't ask me how I know), it can be more trouble than it's worth.

Here's another problem, depending on where you are:

P.S. It's like a battle out there between police radar and detectors. Just wait, eventually there will be a detector that's more advanced than the current radar, then there will be a radar type system that beats that detector.

Re: anybody use this radar detector?

This is one area I know. To get the best custom install system that does everything then get the Escort 9500ci. It does radar, laser and has updates for traffic camera locations by GPS. If you want the best of the best then go with an Escort Redline or Valentine one for your radar, Laser Interceptor for your lidar gun protection and Cheetah 100 for traffic camera locations and integration of all. Also for both set ups coat your headlights and fog lights and a license plate cover to help reduce lidar gun targeting with Veil Anti-Laser Coating.
