Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
i want to do this to my firebird! ive been looking for ways to increase my lighting. i upgraded my headlights to a converson kit running H4 ultra white 100w/90w bulbs... much better than stock but i burn up bulbs ever month to 3 months. car sees all weather. 3 months and a bulb just went out (exploded in the housing lol) these bulbs arent cheap either at like 16$ a pair.
does anyone know the size of the stock firebird headlight size? 7x6" or 8x6". i wanna see if i can find some projector housings and do something like this.

Or get a 4" x 6" & do the Lazy Eye mod at the same time, but that requires a little work to the bulb surround piece too.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
can u explain why? and how can u tell its a fake? this looks like wat DDM sells. DDM only wants 40$ for the setup and id have to get projector lenses. i dnt need crazy HIDs, just want something better than my 100w/90w H4 setup which keeps blowing bulbs on me.

I've played with the fake HID thing before...Played with the H4 bulbs junk...All was a waste of my money.
I spent over 2 years reading, researching & looking at what others have used. Those links were the best I could find, short of cutting out the backs of housing & doing TRUE projectors like 84 1LE did his, which wouldn't work in pop-up Firebird headlights.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
It was the lenses I had the biggest problem with. I doubt they are any good, due to the fake projector lens mounted in front of the bulb, but still inside the sealed-beam style lens.
I'd much rather pay a few bucks for the LIFETIME warranty & from a supplier with a good reputation, in the link I posted. eBay has earned the nickname of fleaBay for a reason.....
It's your money, not mine. Get them if you want, but be warned! Just my

DDM is very reputable. There shipping isnt always the fastest, but who's is?
How tight is the space behind the FB headlights, up/down position?I dont see why a true projector fitted in those cheesy ebay fakes. Then mounted on the car.Cant be too hard.Im gonna have to really look into this.Im almost positive i can make something work.

I just know that in my Book marks, I have them broken down to a folder called 'Final Choice' & the DDM Apexcone kit is the one in there, but I recognize the one you posted as a choice I had at one time, during my research process.
Same with the bulb housing you have listed. I had it, but replaced it with the IPF one.

That was my initial choice, but I replaced it with http://www.ddmtuning.com/product.php?II=102. I'd hafta look & see why I decided on the DDM Apexcone kit instead of the DDM Slim Ballast kit.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
the back of the firebird headlamp is tight lol... the headlight STOCK plug has maybe 1/2" clearance from the back of the support/metal body. not to mention the bucket behind the lense is tight. i kno bc i replace H4 bulbs almost ever month-3months. my guess is condensation/water gets into the housing and blows up the bulb. Im gona go with the EBAY kit with black lenses my car is all black. if i dnt like the way the light looks... ill forage around for some used real HID projectors and ill make them fit but at least i wont be pulling my headlights apart all the time to replace bulbs.
I mean the Ebay/fake projector housings cant be worse than stock/H4 upgrade with 100w/90w ultra white matrix bulbs right? lol
i believe these lenses are glass so mounting a real projector if need be wont be that bad

thats how tight it is lol!
i put Sylvania Silverstars in my gf's ford 500 and they dont work for cr@p. never using them. the best bulbs ive used so far were some 100w/90w hyper white bulbs that were chinese that got in china town in NYC... they were white with a hint of blue and bright as hell.
i guess since theres no pics of a ebay kit on this forum ill have to post pics before and after. if it turns out bad ill figure a way to mount real projectors.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
You know, I just installed a set of those in my Camaro (until I get around to doing the E36 conversion),.....but for some reason they always want to fog up after I turn them on. I even removed 'em once and put 'em in the oven on top of a wet piece of cardboard. (that removes the condensation)
Unfortunately it didn't last though. The next time I turned my lights on they fogged up again. I have no idea what it is that's causing this but it's a little irritating. Anyway, did you have a problem with yours fogging up at all?
You can't really see it that well in this picture, but it is still foggy even after two days of not having them on.

Mikey do you remember the name of the seller that you bought your headlights from? Your beam is way more concentrated than mine.

I would try to make a small hole in the boot or some way that would allow air to pass thru.Maybe that'll dry the condensation.

What I can't figure out is why they're fogging up in the first place. I have a set of round 7" H4 housings in my '72 but they've NEVER fogged up before. I'll go ahead and make a vent hole in the rubber boots and dry out the housings again, but something tells me it isn't going to last.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
Yeah, they're those fake ebay housings. The thing is, I didn't use the black rubber dust boots when I first installed the headlights. Then after they started fogging up I thought that maybe it was because I didn't put them on the back of the housings, and therefore letting the moisture in. So, I removed the lights, dried out the housings, and put them on. Unfortunately it didn't make any difference.......they fogged back up within minutes.

where do you get the mounting ring around the headlamp for the firebirds? the ring that mounts the headlamp to the back bucket.

its the silver ring that holds the headlamp to the headlight assembly that part!
yuck that does look like poo... i just got my HID kit and im hoping for better results than yours... since yours is basically still an H4 bulb. Mines a 35w HID 8000K kit with the fake projector lenses but my projector looks like a magnifying glass compared to yours. i just started my own thread on the install. check it out

Did you just buy the basic kit?Because it does not include a wiring harness & some lamps(like D2S) are extra.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
my kit didnt come with relays... hmmm. but it plugs into the stock H4 socket. i decided against using the ebay fake projector housings and went ahead and got me some hella 60mm projectors .... and i got some 9005 35w 8000K HIDs. im gona use the 9005 bulbs with the H4 kit to keep the wiring stock and untouched. also getting rid of the pop up headlights for a fixed setup with projectors.
quick question... with real projectors they have a cutoff shield inside them to cut the beam off so u dnt blind everyone. on the HELLA 60mm projectors they are there but hella says to setup the projector with the HELLA name upright. but that puts the cutoff shield at the bottom of the projector and not the top (when looking through the back of the projector). is this correct? or is the sheild suppose to be on the top of the projector? bc i kno the cutoff is suppose to cut off the top of the beam not the bottom

Yes, the shield is in the lower half of the projector. How is a 9005 lamp suppose to fit the H4 socket? They are different types of flanges!60mm, thats about 2.5inches.Kinda small for the FB lamp housing.
Just started these today. Those are E55 Hella bi xenon projectors in the cheesy ebay housings.Only real issue is the back.Where the D2S lamp exits.Gotta work on that.May even use a real shroud.Everything else is a breeze....kinda.Be a while before Im done though.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
Tilting the projector or the housing would just point the light upwards & adjusting the bucket would just put the lamp back in the spot it was before.Ive already got a couple ideas to correct this without having to notch the door.

that should be an interesting install. i figured out the projector sheild thing, after some research it showed that the sheild faces the bottom so it blocks the light that bounces inside the cup (blocks the light going up into ppls eyes) this allows the light bouncing off the top of the cup to hit the road.
the 60mm is a pretty good size, about the same size from what i saw in the caddy and a lexus. understood i could have went with a 90mm unit but i didnt like the way it looked. im more interested in how it looks on the car since its going to be a non popup headlight. also a 60mm projector with a HID kit should throw out tons more light than my stock setup.
as far as fitting the H4 and the 9005 together... very simple. the bulbs are different sockets, the "stock type bulb plugs" are different yes, but in the HID kits they use a universal 1 weather pack connector! im going to simply disconnect the H4 bulbs (red and black wire) and cut the high beam wires since i wont be using them in the low beam projectors. this will allow me to swap bulbs like it was a regular 9005 HID kit, just buy new 9005 bulbs, and the projectors are already setup for the 9005s. I just got a pair of 35w 8000K 9005 HIDs for 25$ shipped from amazon. Now that ive converted the HID H4 kit to accept 9005 bulbs the rest of the H4 HID kit will plug right into the stock wiring. extremely simple install, the H4 HID kit i got has 1 connector which plugs in to the stock headlight plug and thats it! no more grounds or anything its amazing. you got me?
yesterday i ripped the old headlight assemblies out and mounted my projectors where i wanted them, made some brackets to hold them in place. today i will start making the headlights with MDF board and floral foam which i will turn into a mold somehow and then vacume form a headlight lense for it.

There's one disadvantage to using a halogen projector i forgot to mention.Since they are made to accept a H4,9005 & other halogen bulbs.Putting an HID lamp inplace changes the focal point. This alters the cutoff.
They'll still be better than reflector type headlights, but not as good as a purpose built HID projector.Interested in seeing the results.

i knew u where gona say that. so i took the time to measure the filatments/focal point of the 9005 HID and the 9005 halogen bulbs and they are the same. so the focal point doesnt change. i tested this too with the halogen bulbs working in the housing and then testing the HID bulb. the cutoff was the same
heres my finished product! they work great!
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fabr...projector.html
converted to non popup as well... too many issues with the headlight motors getting stuck up and i think water was getting into the bulbs/headlights and causing them to blow out bc of how they seal around the H4 bulb.
let me kno what u think. i think they work just as good as the real HID projectors honestly.

That look will take a bit to get used to!Nice work getting that done though.Like i said, they'll be better than reflector lamps, but not as good as a HID projector.
If you werent gonna use the ebay housing you coulda gone with a bigger projector(like E55) & have your hi-beams too.Not farmiliar with those Hella units.Id like to see what the cutoff looks like farther away from the wall or the width of the beam.
Again good work, especially on the covers.Id like to learn vacumm forming myself.Light output looks good, especially for 8k, but if ya think thats night & day over your 90w things. The same can be said going to 4500k over 8000k.Should try that next.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
wats the difference with the real HID projector and the hella projector units? the 60mm units are rather new... ive seen ppl use the 90mm hella projectors on 4th gens but the increased size and it has a glass protective lense over the projector lense itself makes it bulky.
those E55 projectors look good... i dnt understand why they have an open section on the projectors? wouldnt that let the heat out? they look like the projectors i see on the caddy STSs.
do the 4500K really make a huge difference over the 8K? hmmmm lol. i was planning on making maybe something with an LED high beam... or along those lines. also lookin at the 50mm hella projectors for that.
im gona try to find a really dark place with a white wall and try to take a pic from beyond 25ft and see what they look like. aiming them its wat 2" down at 25'? i have them set for around 1-2" down at 10ft right now.

Re: True HID Kit w/Ballasts for only $30 (Lifetime Warranty)
The difference is in the light ouput, wider/longer beam & sharper cutoff.Plus the hi-beam.
The e55s open section is where the shroud goes.Different cars use different shrounds. So i guess thats why its designed that way & letting heat out is good. Its the light you wanna keep in!
4500k is pure white light, no blue/purple or any color.Blue or any color is not useable light. It doesnt help you see better.White light gives you the best visibility. You might see better with 8k HID, but not as good as with 4500k.You want LED for any headlight? Not much(if any) useable light with that.I would'nt waste my money on it.I dont think the technology for LED headlights is that practical currently.
Park along side the wall for a side shot of the cutoff too & the beams width.
