Update:
I snapped a pic of the old and new PF 1218 filters for your enjoyment.
New one is on the left, though I suspect that's fairly obvious from the pic.
My observations:
New one is shorter, has thinner metal, and a much thinner gasket. I still haven't pulled one apart to see how bad the inside looks, but if the outside is any indication, I'd place this filter firmly in the "garbage" category.

Oh man, I need to spend $200+ on a filter because im going to have to rebuild my engine if I use another purolator. Get real
Theres millions of cars running around with over 250,000 miles that probably ran with fram the whole life of the vehicle that can probably still go another 50,000+ miles with fram filters.
Unless im going to use my car for more then daily driving/ weekend dragging, I'll never pay that much for something that is recommended to be replaced every 3,000 miles.

The ecore catches a bad rap for no particular reason other than it's design characteristics, while they may not be very aesthetically pleasing internally, they are still quite functional. They filter well and they are not any more failure prone than a non ecore design.
I cut open every oil filter i use and have never had a failed ecore filter.

Just bought one of the canton ones to try out. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CTR-25-242/ Glad to see I picked the right size as some1 else has gotten one a few pages back, too bad I didn't see this post before that.
Used an oil pump primer for the 1st time too check my block for a possible flow problem when my cam went out, seemed to get good flow. Reason I was checking is because my oil pressure was good but when we pulled the vlave cover oil was only dribbling out while at 3000rpm. Had to be the clogged filter from the lobe dieing, cause it was full of shavings when you poured it out.
Anyways with no oil the primer turned like crazy, with oil/filter it bogged my drill right down. Now yah the oil was cold, but still led me to research out a higher flo-filter. I can't imagine it's much, but to me I'll take any small improvement.

I'm going to have a AC Delco Duragard oil filter put on during my next oil change. I paid more money for it but I like AC Delco and their quality.
