Re: oil filters! which is best!
I use napa gold oil filters (and air filters, just to add that) and have never had any problem. My family has been using them for a long time. I'll take a 5 dollar Napa gold filter that I know I can trust over a 15 dollar K&N any day.

it would make sense if it was though, since someone likes to do a whole lot of constant driving with the motor never getting up to temp... it's not always her fault though, sometimes that situation just gets dropped onto us.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I agree with this, the best "tested" filter is the Purolator Pure and it gets clogged up in about 3K and it does nothing for you after that.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
Yea but it's been the same company for as long as I know and my grandfather was a manager for a time at nape, and he tested a lot of there stuff on the cars he has rebuilt and souped up . That was the point of saying that it been used for a long time by my family. My grandfather use to cut open the filters every now and then an he says they have always been high quality. I don't see them going down anytime soon if they have been high quality for a long time. That would be like me say to you guys that K&N is going to start making filters like fram, no one would believe it. Now is it possible? yes but unlikely for a good, long time standing company.

what evidence do u have that the pure ones clog after 3000miles and then do nothing after that? my dad used to do things before they had warnings out for them like they do now... they didnt say cigarrettes where dangerous to your health untill the 70s. so my grandfather smoked, my father and mother smoke... does that mean its ok for me to smoke? point being that bc something is done for a long time doesnt mean its the best.
tear a filter apart before u judge on its quality. i had nothing positive to say about fram or STP, i will tear my Bosch apart in about 1000miles and see how that looks, then i have a mobile one, K&N, and a purolator pure one to test out and tear apart

no rubber grommet on the PH30
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/atta...-fram-ph30.jpg
heres the STP, the STP was built better in my opinion but still poop... had a rubber anti drainback seal, more filter pleats, but it was a Ecore plastic filter support which i dnt like.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I work for one of the large auto parts chain stores and believe me, our tech guys do test these things. Fram is the worst we offer, but we still do because there are people who will only use Fram. Fram was good when Allied Signal had them, but Honeywell cheapened them and kept the name. We have recently stopped carrying the Tough Guards and placed the Extra Guards on the very bottom of our shelves. Purolator Pure One is the best filter we offer, even over Mobil One and K&N. Just a side note for you synthetic guys, Pennzoil Platinum oil is the best we carry and Mobil One is about the worst.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
Don't know exactly why, but in stainless ball testing, the Pennzoil has the least scarring and the Mobil has the most. I wish we would carry the new Pennzoil synthetic. That is some really good oil. Getting up there in the Amsoil stratosphere.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
As far as the conventinal oils go, they all rate about the same. The only differences are the different additives the manufacturers add which help some, but not really in the viscosity break down, which is the most important measure. Even our house brand is a good oil. Just be sure to change frequently and try not to go over 3K very much. The Bosch filter is a good filter, filters down particles in the same range as the standard purolator. The Bosch Distance Plus is a really good filter, just about as good as the Pure One, but double the price. AC, Mopar and Motorcraft are very good filters too, just a little lacking behind the Purolators, but good filters none the less. A good bargain for the money.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
yea i saw the distance plus one at an advance auto and then i saw the price lol and laughed but i still considered it. i have to say it has the coolest packaging out of all the filters ive ever seen lol.
gona assume u work at zone or advance. i dnt mind the purolator purone except the outer case feels like sand and its covered completely in the "sand grip". purolator pure one, mobile1, K&N, and the bosch seem almost the same from the outside/flange/threaded side.

Done, no i don't have pictures, it was like two years ago and i didn't think i would need picture to prove anything, the Napa filter is good quility and everything, i'm not going to go spend a bunch of money on a bunch of filter and do my own testing when there is a ton of people that have done that already.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
apparently i must have read it wrong, i thought u were talking about frams. i retract my previous post. must of been the 5 different web tabs i was flipping through last nite and must have mixed it up.
i have yet to see or test a napa filter, but saar did post his fram and it had a rubber/silicone anti drainback valve, my PH30 did not.
if you could post the information about the pure1s cloggin it would be appreciated. still in the process of making up my mind, when i do i will be choosing a filter and a oil for life basically. prob just pick up a case of filters and a bunch of oil when its on sale.

I bought a case of "Fleetguard" oil filters, one of the best on the market IMO. Between all the third gens I own it should last me several years.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I've been getting Bosch for a while now. AZ usually has a dear for Castrol GTX High Mileage, and a Bosch oil filter for $20.
Bosch bought purolator's oil filter business a few years ago, so now Bosch filters are the same thing as a pure one purolator.
I'd get a K&N but can't justify the price just to get a nut welded on the bottom of the filter when the Boschis just as good.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I can answer some questions about all of this stuff as I do this for a living right now. I sell these filter every day and the truth is the best filters are going to be the amsoil ones (when you can get them quickly), and the k&n ones. The store that I work at sells purolator, bosch, fram, ac delco, k&n, and mobil 1. From what I have seen and used over the years, the k&n is by far the best we carry and the purolator pure one is a close second. I personally use purolators on my vehicles because I cannot always afford a 13 dollar oil filter but would recommend that on a car you want to keep for a while. Yes, ac delco did change manufacturers on most of their products and most of them that you pick up that do not come from the dealer are absolute crap. I had one or two with the material break apart in the them. And do not get me started on fram because that will never even be seen sitting in my car let alone filter its oil, they are the worst thing you can get. The paperis junk, the gaskets that seal to the block are useless and commonly do not workand the are cheaply designed and constructed. Bosch is fairly new to me but I have had a few come back because the gaskets did not seal and all of the oil came out of the car. I have not had any problems with mobil1 but I have not used one or cut one open yet so I cannot rate that one. The purolators are great filters, good quality filter material, they have a large vehicle coverage list, and the pure ones have an anti-drainback valve to prevent dry starts ( this is one of the most important things to look for in a filter and it is a little flap of metal at the bottom of the threaded hole that keeps oil in the filter to have it closer to the top end when you start the car). The K&N uses about the same filter material as a pure one, but they engineer the cases to hold more oil and the little bolt on the bottom is just a great little extra to have in a tight space wherea hand does not fit so well. Wixare good filters from what I have heard but I cannot really say anything because I have not talked to the people that actually make them. The same goes for stp but I know that their air filters are pretty cheap and junky but the same can be said about a purolator air filter as well. This is just from my experience of course not to say that some people may have had different experiences with some of the filters I do not like but I simply go from the facts I have seen and read.
Oh,and 87 gta, the reason for the penzoil have such a great wear resistance is that it is very high in parafin wax. Very good for an older motor when you are trying to stop it from making noise but not good for the oil passages as it can clog them up sometimes. I have not seen the new stuff but we just got it in so I may have to take a bottle off the shelf and see what's going on with it.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I've never heard of an oil filter gasket not sealing unless 1.it was double gasketed, or 2.cross threaded. I'd bet cash money that human error was to blame for the failure of any Bosch filter.
One of trhe most important things to look at when buying a filter is county of origin. Filters made in the USA will be far superior to those made in Mexico, China, or Japan. The quality contol in facories outside the US is slim to none.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
I've been running the Delco PF-1218 filters on my cars for a long time, but the new batch of them are very different than the old ones... and seem to be much more cheaply built.
I didn't notice the difference until I spun one of my last "old" 1218s off my GTA over the weekend and put it next to one of the new ones. The newer ones are shorter (less oil capacity) and just look like a cheap POS next to the old one. I wound up spinning an old Castrol filter onto the car instead. I don't think I'm going use these new 1218s. I'll probably take one apart to see what the insides look like.
If I remember, I'll post pics.

I just happened to have a PF454 on the shelf. Sure enough.....it's made in China.
This one will probably sit on the shelf for a while. I really don't care for the E-Core design anymore.

i have used "wix" brand oil filters for 32 years, they are quality pieces.but a bit pricy.i would suggest staying away from oil changing centers as they use so cheap a filter .it makes "made in china"look like quality!!!!!! ones to never ever buy have names like;purolator,ac delco,or ANYTHING from pep boys

Because of all this BS I run system 1 oil filters on all my cars. There's no guarantee that a quality filter today will be a quality filter tomorrow. On top of that most places here only sell the fram junk.
System 1 filters and a lifetime supply of o rings, never have to worry about anything ever again.

System 1, Is a good filter. spendy $$ ($150 or better)
30 microns thats not bad.. but check this out
Take a look at Cantons new oil filter, filters down to 8 microns
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CTR-25-242/
like posted above.. this way you will always know whats in your filter!
I went with all cantons oil set up for the new Eng.. will take a few close up shots of the Filter.. it's small thats for sure..holds less then a Qt of Oil.
but my pan is 8 Qt and with the Oil cooler set up adding 2 more Qts, 10 Qts is Fine..lol.

Re: oil filters! which is best!
Update:
I snapped a pic of the old and new PF 1218 filters for your enjoyment.
New one is on the left, though I suspect that's fairly obvious from the pic.
My observations:
New one is shorter, has thinner metal, and a much thinner gasket. I still haven't pulled one apart to see how bad the inside looks, but if the outside is any indication, I'd place this filter firmly in the "garbage" category.

Thanks for the pic. I haven't had a new one but I can now say I won't be ordering those anymore. Geez, it actually looks like a junk filter,..they're not even trying to hide it.

At what point dose the filter have too much resistance and the oil just goes through the bypass?
