Re: 1LE gas tanks?
the 1LE tanks were a "wet sump" design. the tank was designed with a special baffle system to not permit fuel system starvation at times of low fuel levels during hard cornering. the regular tanks did not feature this. now all the replacement tanks for any year 3rd gen f-body are made in the 1LE style.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
I can guarantee you, my 90 or 92 had them. Both starved on corners & neither one had the baffles inthem, when I changed out the pumps.
I have no doubt, somebody will post to say it isn't a myth, but neither one of mine had the baffles.

My '91 does not. I havent checked the '92 yet. If the '92 does not, then I want one for it.

You have exactly the same tank as the 1LE has, P/N 10121026. There are no features that any other tank has that your tank does not.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
i hit the brakes in my 90 and the gauge goes from 3/4 down to 1/4, i havent had to do a pump on it but i dont think mines baffled.
i imagine the baffling in the LS1 tanks would be a lot better.
anyone know if the plastic ls1 tanks are much of any lighter and where the best place to order one from would be?

If I corner hard in my '91 and the gas is lower than half tank, it will "cut out" on me and stutter for just a sec....

ah i thought the baffles would control the fuel through the entire gas tank to keep it from sloshing around too much, my bad

I would understand if all the 92 Z28's had them, just for GM to get rid of left overs due to the end of the 3rd gen. I'll have to test my 92 to see if it has one.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...le-inside.html
Some pictures of the baffles above. From what I've read on the site, everybody with a 1990 and up car has the exact same gas tank. In fact here are the part numbers: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/faq-...nk-size-2.html
As you can see, the 1LE gas tank only existed for 1988 and 1989. In 1990 and later, the stock gas tank was the 88-89 1LE tank.
On the other hand, people with the 1990 and up cars still have the same problem of watching the gas gauge dive when the brakes are applied. As well as starvation under heavy cornering.
My theory is that the baffles helped a little bit. But not as much as people think they do.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
Also, how many of the people, have looked at the different fuel tanks available for F Bodies side by side to see the actual differences in the tanks?????
The issue with the fuel guage is in the sender, not the tank!

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
I'd say they discontinued the regular 88-89 tank after they started putting the 1LE tanks in all the cars (V6's and V8's).

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
Hmm...not to add to the confusion but my 91 1LE tank doesn't have anything inside the tank besides that 4"x6"x2"tall plasti cup/box that the pump filter sits in. If that's what everyone referes to as a baffle well then I have pics to back up what I'm saying. Other than that...just a normal tank from what I can tell, all 16gallons of it.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
What you don't get is they do have the tank, just don't know what the baffle is, so they are looking right at the baffle, and don't realize that's the baffle. They are looking for something other than that plastic box thing, which is the baffle. Could also be, that the fuel tanks have been replaced before. Oh, I guess that's not reasonable to think.

And it is quite doutful that we keep coming up with post 90s that have older tanks in them. Posible? Yes. Anything else. Likely? No.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
OK.... One thing to consider is that the part number may have been superceded AFTER the last of the third gens were built, which happens alot. My '91 Z28 does not have the baffled tank (the little cup). My '91 also did not have poly sway bar bushings, but the replacement part now is the poly bushings.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
ran part #10121026 thru GMpartsdirect.com and Newgmparts.com, came up with no matches. my local dealers are idiots, so if i can find an identical replacement for this part, it would be helpful. my 85 has the original tank and it starves for fuel at anything resembling a tight corner. Any help is much appreciated.

There was a possible 83,000 units affected. GM may have outsourced the replacements. Mine was one of the replacement ones.

I just did my 91 RS's fuel pump a week ago and i did not see a baffle at all, so unless im as blind as a bat i did not have one. And the tank has not been changed to my knowledge at all.

I dug up an old magazine article I clipped years ago. I knew I read about an 18 gallon tank someplace. I'm not at all saying there is any truth to this. Just adding my
FWIW, the article lists the 1LE fuel tank as P/N 10121026.

Re: 1LE gas tanks?
Interesting picture showing the regular baffle vs the 1LE baffle. They seem to be the same height. Just that the 1LE is a bit smaller (narrower).
That would explain why people with 1LE tanks still get the sloshing around corners/braking.
18 gallons seems to be a myth, although there is one person on this board who has gotten 18 or even 19 gallons in their tank. Heck, I can't even get past 12 gallons in my stock tank. But the 12 gallon vs 15.5 gallon debate will rage on forever.

That was also for like 1988. There may have been some changes in '89 or '90 to the tanks. GM did alot of redesign in those 2 years on the F-bodies.
