help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
Hi there again.
Ive sent some emails to summit and autometer and havent got any answer yet (1 week ago I sent the emails) So I will ask over here instead
If i have an 1989 Camaro IROC-Z (that was HARDTOP from factory)
But was made an T-Top after it left the factory (aftermarket T-Top, almost look the same as stock one, it seems like the T-top starts a little furter back then stock, like 2cm maybe...),
it goes as an Hard top and not an T-Top for the gauge holder right ? or ?
Really dont now myself.. dont want to buy the wrong thing.
T-TOP, ATM-12203: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
HARDTOP, ATM-12201 : http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
Really need your help over here
EDIT:
putting up a pic from inside of my car

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
Probably the hardtop version. I got the t-top version for my car which is a factory t-top, your's looks like it has the C&C tops. Mine fit terribly. I ended up cutting it to try and get it in better. It still sits on the dash pad to where I really don't like it. It's not as bad as it was, it was pushing into the pad to where it would probably crack it. If if had it to do over I'd go with just the pods not the whole pillar cover.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
I'd get the hardtop one, and if you have to modify it slightly, then do that.
If it was me buying them, I'd get the pods and mount them myself as Jay stated above. I like being able to put them where I want...

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
So if I but the Hardtop one it will fit then ?
because I will get, one Autometer Cobalt, vacuum/boost, and one cobalt Air/fuel ratio and the Cobalt fuelpressure gauge, So I want them to sit on the left side of me
So you guys think that the hardtop one will do it for me ? is it harrd to install ?
is there anyone that have pictures of that triple one ?
thanks

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
The hardtop will fit. But I heard (and theres numerous posts on this site about this) that they fit like crap and you have to cut the ends. The last pod its the dash pretty bad. You need to either, re-mold the pod by heating it, or notch the dash pad.... If I was you, Id try these guys. I sent them a message and they said it was a direct swap. No hassle no mods.

How can the make thing that dosent fit ? and is it that bad ? really ?
sounds alittle strange to make things that dont fit ..
The other thing is that I live in Sweden and We will order everything from summit in about 3 days.. its hard to inport stuff to sweden so thats why I want to buy everything from one place

Here is a picture of how the t-top version of the triple gauge pillar fits. Like Jay said it sits extremely close to the dashpad...

I tried taking pics of mine, but the lighting in the garage is pretty bad. Plus my dash pad is off as I have been running wiring for the wideband O2 setup.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
Thanks for the pics
I think it look nice. Is it hard to remove the dashplate ? I need to do the same thing soon. Will order everything tomorrow
Do you have a A/F ratio gauge? if so are you soliding the Air/fuel ratio meter directly to the ecm ?
Im going to solder it with the cable from the O2 sensor signal . That goes in to the ECM, PPL D7 i think it was its the eseast way to install it
thanks again for the pics

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
the t-top version also sits and presses into the dashpad. And it is not hard to remove. Just make sure you remove all of the screws along the front/under edge. And four long screws on the deforst vent on the middle front.
customblackbird: those are just gagues I got from ebay. top: Fuel pressure gauge from Glowshift. middle:tach from EvilAutostyle bottom: Air Fuel ratio gauge also by Glowshift.
When I hit the lottery, I will by brand name gauges, but not for now

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
Tach/shift light from Stewart Warner is going in the top hole, not installed yet.. part of the weekend project.
PLX DM-100 is in the middle, it's for my Wideband O2 and EGT, it's fully customizable all digital.
Bottom is Autometer ES series fuel pressure.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
what do u mean pics.... of just the gauge pillar?
right now its filled with stewart warner gauges. i have a digital trans temp but thats at the other side along side the middle air vents... i'll be putting a stewart warner trans temp gauge after i install it in the vent for a custom look.
HCR13...wat did they cost U? i dont like the autometer and the stewart warners are only like 50$ a pop.
thanks jay... like the fuel pressure. i have a digital trans temp and is ok but it looks outa place with my other gauges.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
I got my fuel pressure gauge and A/F gauge for about $50 each with ship. And about $40 for the tach... When I have money to burn I'll get the $200 fuel pressure gauge from Autometer and a $900 wide band setup...

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
Mine was only $400 with the gauge. Could have skipped the gauge and it would have been $200, or gone with a $80 digital gauge. I figured that since I can have this one display the EGT as well and that's not something I need to see all the time it was worth it.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
here are 2 pics of the daytime on a hardtop. the pics look kinda weird but mine fit great and didnt have to trim anything.i have an 86ta wit t-tops and the pillars are different, i think its just the height, and th top is a slightly different style
the pillar fits good, also it looks like the gauges are squished to the bottom but its really not like that. when your sitting in the car the top gauge is directly infront of my eyes at head height... maybe alil higher. im 6'1" too. also u can see how the bottom gauge sits on the dashpad and acutally leaves and indent in the pad. also the first pick makes it seem like u can see the gauges fully but when u sit in the car the gauges arent obstructed at all and u can see the gauges clearly. it also seems like the individual gauge holes are actually angles slightly different from each hole for optimal viewing. the first pick the camera is slightly higher than head height

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
mine fits just about the same way...I'm going to "experiment" tomorrow and see if I can get it to fit slightly better. I'm going to see if I can "shave" some of the dashpad to make it fit a couple of cm's thinner and maybe move up the mounted gauge holder on the original pillar it sits on...

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
yea most of your $$ went to the cobalt gauges they are nice but some major $$.
not sure why u got the fuel pressure gauge since u only really need it to set the pressure and then it doesnt change. even for tuning purposes the only one needed was on the fuel rail. but still ur $ and it'll look cool.
same thing with the other 2. mostly just tuning and wont change after its set. but the boost i can see if your running a poweradder.
ive seen the cobalts and they are good lookin gauges. my bro's waiting for them to make 5" speedo and tach's so he can get em in his 68 vette convert with 509 merlin.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
It's good to be able to monitor. Helps with diagnosing issues. If the pressure drops suddenly then you know somethings up. My fuel supply hose had come loose in the tank and the car ran, but not right. If I had the fuel gauge hooked up at the time I would have seen that something wasn't right with the fuel supply right away. Not a requirement but it comes in handy.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
Yeah I had ALOT of problems for about 2years with the car now. finally got it running right, instead of having "normal" gauges hanging from the engine taped to the windscreen, I thought of this ones just to keep track of everything..
and the msd distributor are som $$ to..
And after this it will be, Edelbrock High-Flo intake with runners and Edelbrock TES headers... (next winter)
but as Jay said, its good to have these gauges to monitor pressure and vacuum and so.. A/F is good to.. right now im working on finetuning the prom And the fuelpressure changes when you give throttle, thats cool to see too
and the cobalt is soo cool to
http://irocz.info.se/ <-- all the projects will be on my page, with alot of info and pics.. dont forget to write in the guestbook.

I agree with Jay, I have my fuel pressure gauge to keep track of it... I can see the argument of the narrowband A/F...mine just jumps back and forth, but I do get an idea at WOT of the ratio..

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
Do the glowshift units fit into the autometer triple guage T-Top pod well?
I've been wanting to put the triple gauge pod into my GTA for awhile but the cost was holding me back...... The glowshift units could make the idea possible.....

yeah, the glowshifts have been working pretty well. They fit nice and flush... I think I might have used a bit on sandpaper on one of the pods to make the hole a mm or 2 bigger...no biggie, I've had to do that with a previous universal pod holder..//hcr

It would be great to see how you mounted this in the engine bay. I'm going to run a couple guages there so I can see while I've got the hood up. I was thinking of running mine off the old 9th cold start injector plug and mounting them at the firewall, but yours might be easier. Do you feel up to posting a pic????? Thanx, Nitro

Just now saw this thread but here's an alternative....Can you do fiberglass? Buy the add-on pods, and set them where YOU want them. Maybe above the dash higher, so the dash can be more easily removed....

A friend built it. I think he used those add-on pods, then just glassed over the edges to blend it in smoothly.

What about the texture? It doesn't look smooth, it actually looks closer in that pic to the stock texture on the plastic than what the Autometer one is. I am planning on basically doing the same thing, just with the pillar section I already bought... but wasn't sure about getting the texture right.

Dunno.......He might covered the WHOLE pillar (with a thin coat), so whatever texture) he made matched. I'll ask him.

Re: help, gauge pod holder (autometer) question
well this is a little off topic but you said that you change your hardtop to a t-top, and i was wondering how you did that what did you have to do in order to make that work and can i get some pictures of that,
other than that i think that the gauges are going to look good in your car was also thinking of getting more gauges for mine and newer ones to replace the cheap stock ones

It was done late in 1989 right after it left the factory so I really dont know how its made, (it was cheaper to get an t-top this way then right from the factory thats why the first owner bought a hardtop and then went to another company that made real t-tops..
Yeah the gauges will look real good
