Looking for New Car Alarm, need advice

Hello, I want to hook up a alarm system which i can self install. But after looking through so many diffrent alarms on ebay im not sure which one to get and which ones to stay away from. If anyone knows which is a good car alarm for my 84 camaro that would be great. If you have a alarm and are very happy with it and you did a self install please let me know.

also if i did have a pro install how much does that very. Thanks

I was going to buy this, does this sound like a good thing to add to my ride? sounds sweet.

Re: Looking for New Car Alarm, need advice

Get something with a 2-Way remote. Viper is a good choice. If you install it yourself, stealth it. Tuck all the wires in factory loom. When you cut a zip tie to run a new wire, replace it. The more factory it looks the harder it is to kill your alarm. Also, mount the sirens in odd places. Inside the center console, in the rear panelling of the trunk, etc. Same with the alarm unit and the battery backup.

Edit: Remember, a starter kill can be bypassed with a screwdriver. You want an ignition kill or a fuel rail kill as well.

Re: Looking for New Car Alarm, need advice

Thanks for the reply, yes i think i might go with viper, also i see allot of alarms with remote start, it looks difficult to install, should i get one with or without or is it just preference.

also, the ignition kill, do you know of a good one that works and not too hard to install, I had my last ride stolen, and im not gonna have this one stolen thats for sure if you catch my drift.

Any alarm made by a company called D.E.I. will do. They make the Viper brand name, as well as many other brand name. Essentially they are all pretty much the same as long as it's made by DEI

Re: Looking for New Car Alarm, need advice

Just wire a relay into one of the wires that goes into your coil (not too sure on this one, haven't done it yet) and have the alarm open the connection so the coil doesn't send out power.

My question would be, how to mount a kill switch so it does not look like a kill switch?

Re: Looking for New Car Alarm, need advice

I'm happy w/ my Code Alarm, I think its a CA-150. I also added a glass breakage sensor (since the shock sensor isn't too sensitive, plus the t-tops). Make sure to put pins in the hood/trunk as well. I hooked it up to the horn and a siren (mounted by the battery). Lastly, I put a piezo in the center vent to make it slightly painful to be in the car with it going off. As everyone said, installation is key, and add kill switches!!!

Re: Looking for New Car Alarm, need advice

I have an audiovox/Prestige alarm with a 2way remote and remote starter which displays opens doors, when car is remote started with timer and temperature and auto start timers, but anyways its a really nice alarm and ive been quiet happy with it, But I would like to add a kill switch and microwave sensor.

Does anyone know how to make the hood display as the hood open and not as a door? it has the icon for the hood but when the hoods open it shows as a door?

Try asking here
http://www.caraudiocentral.net/

I'm sure the icons on the remote are just indicators for "zones" on the alarm brain. All you have to do is find out which zone indicates the hood icon, and wire the hood pin to that zone instead of the zone it is currently wired to.

I had a code alarm. it was nothing but a pain in the ***. after about 3 years it stopped working entirely. No remote open, no alarm siren, nothing. Except when I'd want to go somewhere the ignition would be locked about half the the time. And I'd be driving down the road and it would just start alarming off. When I finally decieded I had enough I looked under the dash and saw what a mess the installer had made of it!!! it was a nightmare, I finally found the brain buried up in there. It cost me 100 dollars to have tweeter audio install it(which I would never have them do again.) All that said, you get what you pay for. I wanted a cheap alarm system, and I got one. and never have anyone whose not a professional install it, even people who try to pass themselves off as professionals, meet the guy whose actually going to do it.

so I bought the above kill switch and I can't seem to hook it up right...I think I'm going to return it unless anyone can help me? It said to hook it up to a green wire with a white or black stripe that came off of the carb...I did that and it didn't work.

Check out a Car Gard CG 1-AC with gem lock. It secures the ignition switch so there is no way to pop it and take a joy ride. I use one along with a cheap entry alarm with red blinking l.e.d.

I've seen a story on those. I forget it if was video on TV, or in print in a magazine, but I do recall...

They weren't allowed to video/take pictures DURING the install, and they mentioned fake wires being installed. Basically, the harness had like 30 wires, but a lot of them did ZERO. So the chances of bypassing it, with the wires cut/whatever, was impossible.

Really cool!

That's one advantage to my POS I guess...nobody would wanna steal it!
