SZ50 SIDEWALL BLOWOUT

Just had a blow out of the right rear sidewall during an approximately 30mph
right hand turn. Tires are SZ50s 255/50/16 on 92 Z-28.

Anybody have any idea as to cause as there is no apparent external trauma to the sidewall and the load was small. Cross section approximates a loaf of bread in appearance with the flat towards the inside and 3" across and crown towards the tread about 3.5" across. Any ideas?

Now to ordering new tires, any suggestions?

GO WITH BFG.. YOU WILL NEVER LOSE.. I WENT WITH COOPER XST'S BUT I CAN DRIVE THEM IN THE COLD WEATHER IN IOWA.. SO BFG IS THE WAY TO GO.. GO TO YOUR LOCAL DEALER AND EXPLAIN WHAT YOU WANT. MY BUDDY AND I HAD HIS
COMP T/A VR4 UP TO 175 MPH.. AND THEY HELD LIKE GLUE. SO IF THAT SAYS ANYTHING ABOUT THE BFG V RATED TIRES.. GO BFG..

I've been running the sz50's for almost two yrs, never had a problem with them. I've even used them on the race track. I'm curious what tire pressure were you running in them? and were there any cuts to the sidewall?

Gentlemen,

I originally bought the tires from the Tirerack. Pressure was kept from between 40 to 43 psi. No sidewall scuffs, marks, or other indications of trauma. The rim has a rubber imprint spot that matches the flap that blew out.

I spent a few hours on the phone with Firestone/Bridgestone today. Only one person would give their name. The party line is that only the SUV tires have any problems and they have not had one single complaint or report, substantiated or not, of sidewall blowout on any other tire without gross and obvious trauma (impact, etc.). Only a trained investigator could make any other determination and I would have to return it to the original seller, ie.
send it back to the Tirerack.

I have investigated many aircraft accidents and have a slight clue as to
what to look for. The idea of sending it to Tirerack for investigation and determination
is ludicrous. Any evidence would be tainted dismounting, shipping, etc.

Tirerack has made me a deal on some replacements and was helpful. I understand
that they are constrained by their contractual obligations and can highly recommend them.
