Re: K&N X-Stream Air Cleaner Lid
I bought one last summer. My philosophy is basically: the more air, the better. Most all people have K&N's now, but I sometimes wonder how well they keep the filters cleaned, oiled, etc. I figure that having the extra element there when the filter is not that clean will make up for neglect in maintenance.
Plus, Im sure with a cowl hood, it just seems smarter to have all available space dedicated to air intake.
If you really cant afford it, dont sweat it. But if youre looking for something cool, pick one up.

Not to be used with a drop base air cleaner lid, if you're using a flat bottom lid then I'd pick one up since it can't hurt, but that 14x3 air filter should flow more than enough. A better mod would be a sheetmetal cowl to limit the air flow to just cool air off the cowl hood and not engine heat. The drop base air cleaner along with the thicker top element can sometimes suck the center of the filter onto the carb.
