AFR Eliminator 195 Heads
Hi folks,
After a 6 month wait, I received my AFRs. The overall quality appears to be pretty good, with one (MAJOR, in my view) exception. While doing the final installation of the rocker studs I noticed that the stud hole appeared to penetrate into the intake port. Sure enough, a little pressure with a nail poked right through (actually it was probably a hanging burr), leaving a 1/8" x 1/4" hole. All 8 intake ports had this condition. I contacted AFR to notify them of my findings. They told me that this condition was "OK", and told me to use thread sealer during installation of the rocker studs (DUH). I asked about the (blocked-off) hole interfering with airflow....same answer, "No major affect on airflow". So, I plan to use Permatex No. 1 to install / seal the rocker studs, letting the sealant squeeze out into the port, then trimming the sealant flush to the port roof upon cure of sealant.
This may or may not be a major concern performance wise, BUT, as I told the AFR rep, having the chance of the chip, had I not noticed it, being dislodged and taking a trip through the cumbustion chamber and cylinder, could cause damage (this part concerned me most; subtract points from quality rating).
So, inspect these heads carefully; look into the rocker stud hole, look at the roof of the intake port. Beware of penetration, or worse, a partial penetration leaving a hanging chip ready to fall into the intake tract.
Still, I can't wait to install the heads, along with CompCams XFI268 cam!

It is common for the rocker stud holes to be open on the intake runners also I have filled in the holes on a flow bench and it does not affect the flow of the heads. Good luck and I bet you will be pleased with the power.

Right. This is what I did when I installed new 7/16" studs in my Dart heads. I bought longer studs that protruded into the runner a little bit. I then put the studs in my lathe and trimmed them to be flush with the top of the port. That way I got maximum strength by using every last bit of thread and insured proper air flow. Also used sealer on the threads.

you mean like this? My 195's were the same way...and i starting to worry now..after reading this post cause I didnt do anything with the hole...I just blew the heads out with high pressure air and puts gobs of thread sealant on my rocker studs.......I will be pissed if any piece of that falls into my valves.....''what will that cause?

Just updated my sig...best dyno run, before LSRacing tune, 321 ft/lbs @3200 RPM, 240 rwhp @ 4900 (didn't think TPI was supposed to pull past 4XXX). According to my AUTOXRAY Scanner, the LSR tune is much better than the tune I made the dyno pull on.
BTW, I'm not really ragging on AFR at all... just posted for a "heads-up" to fellow enthusiasts...same reason I called AFR to inform them of my findings.
Anyone have any speculation on power figures w/AFRs & XFI 268 cam (.218*/ .224 @ .050, 268*/ 270* advertised, .535" lift w/ 1.5 rockers) and revised LSR tune added to my mods?

Nice for an L98....was that pull before the AFR's and the LSR tune?..or just the tune?

That pull was before the AFRs,CompCams XFI 268, and LSR tune. I will post dyno results of the AFR/CompCam/revised LSR tune mod as soon as I finish the installation and work the bugs out.

C'mon, guys!
Someone venture a guess as to what power levels I should see with the AFRs & CompCams cam, with a good tune. The tune I got for my existing combo, from LS Racing Chips,was very good (BLMs 128-134, knock retard max 3*, WOT O2 reading 900-905; that is pretty good, isn't it?). LSR chips will be doing the tune for the head / cam upgrade. Thanx!

Thanx for the reply; although it's nothing spectacular, I would be glad to see 300 @ the wheels,it's an improvement for my car. Maybe I'll see what I can do to improve the TES set-up..or get DYNO Don's headers, if possible.
