Engine Combo: Suggestions/Comments
Just received an email with many stats on an engine in the works for my Iroc. On paper it looks good, but I wanted to get some input from people with more experience in the engine building game than I.
============================================
tfs heads 23' alum. these will be ported
je srp pistons [ these pistons will take anything you could throw at it]
speed pro rings file fit
clevite bearings, rods and mains
melling oil pump high volume
late model block one piece rear seal, maybe 4bolt [ i think i have one here] good luck for you
eagle rods
i have a comp cam on my parts shelve that specs 563/563-224/224@ 050 on a 108 straight up. we have made killer power with this grind[ this is a custom grind ]
hydraulic lifters comps, or cranes
pro magnum pushrods [ one piece, chromoly ]
crankshaft cast steel eagle
===================================
Now I realize a few things will have to be added to this for it to be an optimum combination, including 1 3/4 headers, custom PROM, stout transmission, better gears, etc. These are all planned as well. Since displacement will remain at 5.7, would the superram or miniram be more ideal here? The engine will be used daily in stop and go traffic, so I need it to remain at least reasonably streetable. Does the cam sound too radical or do you think enough custom programming will tame it for the street? GTP is building the engine and they certainly are knowledgeable on this stuff, but I think their experience may be more concentrated on fourth gens. Either way, this engine *should* be a monster when it's finished

Looks like 108 lobe sep. That engine will run like toilet with that custom COMP cam. That has to be a carb cam, not EFI...
Get either the stock LT4 cam (115 LS, about 206/216(?), .474"/.480") or the LT4 Hot Cam (112 LS, about 212/220(?), .525"/.525", I think). These are great cams with plenty of lift, especially the HOT cam. 400HP easy w/righ CR, heads and exhaust. Will need a lot of PROM work, or a similar car PROM copy from a nice high-HP engine house...

Car: 90 IROC
Engine: 406
Transmission: GMPP 93/4L60
Axle/Gears: 9 bolt 3.27
I would use the standard volume oil pump. you say it will be a street car so go for torque. I would use the SuperRam with a matching cam. The Accel/lingenfelter 219 roller or 213 if its flat tappet. And 1 5/8 headers, The TFs 23* are a good set of heads for what you are building. Just my opinion.
Good luck!

That cam will give the computer fits. Most recommend LSA of 112* to 114*. Plus its a flat tappet design (at least by the lifters mentioned). Might as well go with a roller, so as mentioned, look at the LT4 Hot cam with the 1.6 roller rockers. Sounds great though.
