Transmission: th-400
Axle/Gears: 4th Gen 10 bolt/Detroit TrueTrac 4.
the best thing you can do to make a 305 faster is to upgrade to a 350. basically everything will bolt on to a 350 that will bolt on to a 305.

hey mplangevin, its cool that you go to Cal Poly Pomona... I have a couple of very good friends that go there.

about your engine... well, the bad news is you have the LG4 which is pretty much a dog of a motor (i really shouldn't be talking, i have a 3.1!). Yet, the good news is its a small block chevy, and i believe that anything you bolt onto it will bolt onto a 350 down the road if you feel the urge for more power. now that i've said that, i should say that this site is a huge database of stuff you can do to your car, and if you searched a little you could find many routes to follow. but, i'll just answer your question in a cliffs notes version..

things you should look into:
replace your stock exhaust... headers, cat, cat-back... everything; but keep in mind that you live in the great state of california, and its gotta be smog legal.

get an open element air cleaner with a high flow filter... cheap, easy, gains a few horses for your car (you can easily change this back to stock when your smog check comes)

get an aftermarket intake manifold... these are good for a couple of horsepower but remember the california thing..

if anyone else would like to add to this, by all means go ahead...

oh, and if you have any questions i'd be happy to answer them.
