don't go cheap when buying a chip, buy something from a trusted company, such as jet performance. It'll be worth the money. The chip goes into the computer, though I couldn't tell you wehre that is, as I no longer use the computer, and just disconnected the things it controlled.

Save your money. Generic chips like from Hypertech and Jet do very little for the amount you pay for them.
The computer located behind the passenger dash. There are three 7mm screws holding the cover on, underneath, and then two more 7mm screws fastening the computer bracket to the dash. Remove those and the computer comes out.

Anyone had or know of Fastchips Inc. I know I should make my own and I will, but for now with a stock setup and them being cheap, just wondering if anyone has results with them and if they are any good.

I have a '91 RS with a 3.1L V6. Is there any chips out there for my car? If so how much do they cost, what do they do, and will it be worth it? **16 years old... knows nothing about cars... wants to learn from others who have the same car**

I put a fastchip in my 89 GTA with the same set up as you. I have been happy with the results but I don't have anything else to compare to. Ed Wright is extremely helpful and has always answered any email that I have sent within 1 day.

'Off the shelf' chips like Jet, Hypertech, ADS, etc are all crap. You can buy the equipment to make your own for about the same amount of money. I should know because I have these images on file. You could get close to the same performance from advancing your timing and tuning with an AFPR (probably better - IMHO).
AS&M chips suck. I had a friend who ordered a custom chip and it was a stock chip. Maybe they have changed since then. But, I doubt it.
TPIS chips .... blah, ugh. They couldn't program their way out of a turd. I remember calling them about my Level V chip because it was way rich at idle (this was before I got into the DIY EFI world). The programmer acted very arrogant about the calibration and acted as though there could not be a problem. Gimme a break. After I looked at the image for what they programmed I about lost it laughing with anger. The fuel tables totally sucked ... why? Because they were basically stock!!! They dropped the VE around 20-25kpa. Gimme a freakin' break ... a 218/224 cam idles at around 55kPa. Other than that - there were NO VE changes. A 218 cam with AFR heads is much more efficient in the upper RPMs than a stock headed, stock cammed car and they did nothing. They changed nothing. WTF. Furthermore, I was running AS&M semi-siamesed runners and they should have shifted the fuel curve up slightly. No deal. Nothing. I sent them a very professional typed outline of the mods on my car. They can't say they didn't know what I was running. They are the reason that I got into the DIY-EFI world so, in many ways, I am grateful for them screwing me out of $500. But, that is $500 that I could have spent on something else.
If I was forced to go with anyone I would go with Ed Wright. At least he knows what he is doing and will work with you. The first couple calibrations will be off but at least he will eventually narrow down the calibration to a good tune as long as you can provide some data. But, the best bet is to learn to do it yourself. Check out my article in the tech section or the link at the top of the PROM forum.

I'd like to add JET to Traxion's list of turd whackers. The friend I bought our IROC from (in pieces)spent $500 on a custom JET chip for the car (355, 218/228 - 110 cam, 24# SVO injectors). The stock 305 chip ran better,, which was baffling at first to me. When a buddy read the chip for me the injector constant was at 18 and they had LOWERED the idle to 450 - the fans even came on too early. What a fricken joke - he paid $500 to wash the cylinder walls down and nearly destroy the engine. I called to see if they wanted to make an attempt to get this chip right,, they said they only keep records for six months and would not re-burn it without their "request records". They could not tell me if the guy that burned this chip was still there either since the records had been destroyed. SO - BEWARE OF JET.

That home-brew computer only controls fuel. What about spark including knock retard, low octane routines, PE spark, etc? What about such things as highway mode, IAC learning routines, etc? I like the GM computer. Only real reason to go to an aftermarket computer is ....
1) You NEED to program the computer with the car running.
2) You need to run REALLY big injectors (bigger than 40lb/hr).
3) You are running boost and need a 2 or 3 bar map sensor.
4) You want the performance of a Wide Band O2 that is used by the computer.
IMHO, I don't really see a need to go to an aftermarket setup until you go with forced induction. A forced induction setup needs the 2 or 3bar MAP sensors, is probably running huge injectors, and would REALLY benefit from a wide band O2 setup. However, even in this case you could still use a GM computer. Just use a SyTy ECM and then program WOT with data collected via the DIY Wide Band O2 sensor.

keep the windows down and hang your head out..... at least you'll feel like your going fast!
jk. i would agree stock setup; don't bother with a chip. if you decide to go further than consider it.
it took me a year and half to get rid of my stage 2 hypertech; i couldn't give that thing away to anyone who knew anything. it was as good as a paper weight so i sold it for a tank of gas. biggest waste of money
