Thermomaster Power Chip Hypertech # 122362

1992 Camaro RS convertible
25th Anniversary
305 TBI

I recently installed this thermomaster chip in my car. While not a REAL burn burner, with the other mods I have made and what they recommend, (160 degree thermostat (mine is 170); 3" cat back exhaust) I have noticed a marked improvement in off the line acceleration and WOT driving. Anyone who has a 305 TBI that is stock in one of these cars knows what a dog they can be.

Call Hypertech @ 1-901-382-8888 or visit them @ http://www.hypertech.com for more information.

Installation is a breeze and the instructions are simplistic, easy to follow, have great illustrations, detailed and include WHERE to find your computer, which did help me out since I had no idea it was.

I have also installed the Hypertech Power Coil kit; but that is a post for another time!

A Matter Of Opinion

Obviously a matter of opinion. My opinion is that every little bit helps, and the little things do add up. Did I notice a difference? Yes, I did. Am I using it and able to make an informed decision? Yes, I can.

But thank you for your factual opinion anyway.

I bought a hypertech thermomaster a while back but in the instructions it said to use 93 octane. Ive been to 2 gas stations that carry that so i sent the chip back since I didnt want to worry about any detonation. What are you running. Most of the comments on the message board about hypertech and jet say the had a problem with the engine pinging, I thought maybe they had not used hi enough octane. Have you had any problems along those lines. Im guessing it took off the speeder limiter and thats the main reason I want to get one, but if they might cause more problems I would rather not get one.

Just say "NO!" To 93 Octane Fuel

Hello,

I live in Maine and fuel (gasoline)is wicked expensive. I buy the absolute cheapest that I can find. Which is to say that I run plain old regular unleadeed......probably about 87 octane.

The instructions that came with MY Hypertech chip say absolutely NOTHING about running 93 octane fuel. That aspect is not mentioned at all.

Have I experienced "pinging"? No. I have not. The car runs flawlessly, and is peppier. It does seem to use more fuel, but then again is it because I have my foot in it?!

This (in my opinion.....and we ALL know what opinions are like) is a good mod. Easy too, and it does give "BANG" for the $$$$.

Personaly I have seen many articles and heard many personal experiences about the thermo chip costing 3hp on the dyno and runnin a few mph slower in the quarter.

Also bought one for my s-10 a few years ago and yes it does say to use 93 octane. Didn't notice anything different when I bought the chip but the shift points got raised and caused my high mileage 700r4 to bite the dust. for 240 bucks at the time it IMO wasn't worth it.

READ MY LIPS: NO 93 OCTANE

Your kit may or may not have said that you are required or recommended to run 93 octane gasoline, however, with my kit and instructions open in front of me, there is no mention anywhere of 93 octane fuel or a change of any kind to the fuel that is being used in the vehicle.

I have no other information other than what is presented to me, which is what I am sharing on this forum. That is what I am attempting to do. That is factual and not a matter of opinion.

As far as the price is concerned, I paid less than half the price that you stated.

I would be interested in seeing some articles (proof) that either support or dismiss the claims about the thermochip, one way or the other. Otherwise you know what they say about opinions, and everyone has one.

i'm currently working on putting together a well documented article with some various chips and their companies to prove how they waste the average consumers money.

i too paid 250 for my stage II thermomaster from hypertech and while it bumped up my timing and turned my fans on a few degrees earlier it failed to do what it claimed. there were a slight amount of points raised on the dyno, however they all good have been done without the chip for free.

same thing with jet, superchip and even tpis.

tpis is the worst of them all.....450 for a stage 6 that makes very slight changes to a stock prom. major waste of time and money.

I have the stage 2 thermomaster. I noticed a slight seat of the pants feel and I definatly noticed my tranny shifting a little higher than stock. I picked mine up for $80. Worth it at that cost? you bet, Would I have paid over 200? hell no. We all understand that burning your own chip is the way to go and you have unlimited oppurtunity to tune and adjust, that just seemed like more than I was ready to get into for now. SOmeday I will throw this out and burn my own chips but thats down the road for now if you can pick one up cheap go for it. I am curious as hell to see these articles though KANDIED, let us know when you get them posted.

still working on them. i honestly can't program worth a damn but i am having help from a few who really know there stuff. i have gone through countless options and many different scenarios so i'm basically hoping to inform people more then anything in the chance that it saves even one person from wasting their time and hard earned money. hope to have it all together very soon. the hardest part has been getting the hard real world data on the street/strip/dyno setups, so once that is all together i'll get it out.
