Tire Sizes. 255/50/16's or 245's?

I have 15's on the car right now but I am putting 16x8's on real soon. I had 265/50's before and on the front they rubbed very slightly if I turned the wheel all the way. Now if I go with 255's with these 16x8's will they still rub? Remind u that the 265's barley rubbed the inside of the wheel well. Is there anyone out there with 255's with 16x8's that can tell me if when u turn ur wheel all the way do they rub? Thanks a lot guys.

depends on the offset of the 16x8 that you are going to put on the car... to help you visualize the difference between 265's and 255's... 10mm is about 3/4 of an inch....

you shouldn't have any problems at all

I have 16" IROC rims with 255/50/16 tires and after an alignment they didn't rub the wheeelwell. So I know with proper backspacing and alignment they should work.

Just a little help on metric conversions:

1" = 25.4mm

So 10mm is about 25/64" or less than 1/2"

I'm running 255/50-16 autocross tires on factory 92 Z28 wheels. I have no problem with rubbing in the front, but I do have some rubbing with the rears. This may not be a problem with street tires/street driving. In addition, I believe the rear suspension bushing need to be replaced as well.

What about profile? Anyone running a 45 profile? Do u have problems with ur car rubbing the ground? Mine has the 91 GFX so it is 4-5 inches from the ground. Think I would have a problem if I was to go with the 45 profile?

The lower profile 45vs50 is not going to make you scrape...I wouldnt think. It will lower the gearing of your car so it may pull slightly better 60' and Quarter times. I would think the only downside would be gas mileage and possibly traction off the line. (if you are already having one it will get slightly worse) Anyone done this because Im speaking only from theory?...I'd be interested to see if it works.
Hope that helps

Believe it or not my GTA rims were added to the car at the dealership were it was originally bought new. My dad bought it new back in 89, he didnt know the difference between the Formula and GTA rims. He did say he picked the car car out because it stood out the most. Had to be the rims. I was thinking about ordering two GTA front rims from classic to add to put on the rears just to add a little more aggressive look. But I need charcoal spokes.

Kumho makes a 245/45/WR16

Check tirerack.com it is lists all the tires for a certain size and rating.

I finally got the 255x50 16s mounted (not until Saturday) and they fit great. Car has a more aggressive look, and the Khumos seem to handle really good. Im happy, and the Bird is too!

You guys must not have seen my ad...I have Goodyear GSC 245/45/ZR16's for $279.00 a set. That is a set of 4...they are brand new, not blems. I took advantage of a mistake in the Goodyear catalog and got a truckload of them. Email me at CarNDrvr@aol.com.

Eric, long time no chat.

I have heard from people that have 255s all around, 245s all around, and a combination of both.

I remember talking to a guy that has an 86 IROC that has 255/50ZR16 SZ50s all around, and he said that they have never rubbed. But then again, somebody else I have talked to over said that they rub like CRAZY. But, I think it is hard to say..everyone has different stories about it.

Just to give you an idea about how different it is, a friend of mine had a 91 RS too, and his front 245s rubbed like a b*tch. I think that it comes down to the tire itself. You know how some tires have larger footprints than others that are the same size? Well, I think it has to do with that maybe? I dunno.

I did the middle of the road thing...255s in back and 245 in the front.

Yeah where in the hell have u been?

Well Brian, I thought about doing what u did a long time ago but then how am I suppose to rotate them? So I think I am gonna just go with the Kumho 245/45/WR16's.

I have 245-45-16's on stock 92 16" wheels.
The car was pretty low, before I put them on, and after, I had to cut the springs a little more to get it to look right, since the gap at the fender is bigger. Looks good now, but car needs to be pretty low with 45 series or it just doesn't look right to me. Mine are Falken GRB's , about $110 apiece at Wheel Works.Best handling tires I've had, and not nearly as scary in the rain as some.

Stock 86 16x8 wheels and 245/50/15 Goodyear GT+4 all around. They rub on the front at full lock.
Must be that 1/8" of road tar buildup on the fenderliners!

cars that came with different wheels had different stops in the steering box depending on the wheels that it came with. A car that came with 15’s will rub in the front at full lock with anything wider then a 215, on a lowered car with a 235 60 15 or a 245 50 15 (not sure about the 255) you can stop the rubbing by running about ¼” spacers.

I just got those tires CrnDrv was selling 4 for $279 245/45/16s Goodyear GS-C. They're very nice looking, sidewalls are verticle(straight) no curved bulge look. They are however noticably shorter I'd say close to 3/4". It's not a bad thing, but creates a larger fender gap. I also can imagine these tires handling better than 245/50 series tires. I'm already quite impressed with them after only 1 day and would probably buy extras to save if I wasn't planning on 17" wheels.

My 1989 Formula 350 has the stock rims and 255/50/16 BFG ZR's. They rub the inner fender liner at full lock, but otherwise no probs.

It also depends on the tire brand. My dunlops 255/50/zr16 rub in the front but I think it was firestone firehawks that didn't (can't remember for sure). Also ifyour car came with 16's then your steering stops are set differently also.

The best Steering Box to have is marked "XH"
on the cover. This is the box that came on 91-92 Z-28's and RS's that came with 16"x8" Wheels.Stops are correct for big tires and
I think ratio is 12:1.

I have BFG ZR4 245/50/R16's on the front of my 89 Rs and they rub considerablly at full turn and they are monted on 16x8 blk GTA wheel. The GTA wheels may have a litte diffrent of an offset than the stock 16x8 wheels. JMO

Mine has the black center GTA wheels from Classic Ind. I ordered all front offsets and have no problems running 255 50 16's. I have ran Comp T/A ZR's and now have Falken Ziex's on there. The Ziex's handle better!
