I like my magnaflow. Its not as loud as my flowmaster, especially at Idle, but it has a much lower, deeper, mellower sound. More manly if you ask me. And yeah, above 3k rpm it roars.

if u want your car to sound like a sleeper, id agree with the magnaflow. u can go to www.magnaflow.com and hear some sound clips, they almost make "sport compacts" sound like they have *****
flowmaster is loud all the time. and will grab alot of attention, but loses its sound in the high rpms and it has alot of interior noise which can get annoying, ive heard alot of people say they like the hooker catback too

I'll vouche for the hooker catback. Very nice sound and fabrication and has the same temperment as the magnaflow described above.

I agree, the Hooker sounds mellow and tough at idle but not sloppy and anoying like the Flowmaster. Under load the Hooker really wakes up and makes some noise though.
I ran the Hooker kit for about 100 miles on the stock motor, it sounds alot better with the cat removed. I then ran it for about 25 miles with my new 383 and a big cam and shorty headers and it sounded really tough.
I have just got rid of it though for a Mufflex setup with longtube headers.

Hey MrNova, are you running just a magnaflow muffler or a cat-back for a 4th gen. If you are running a cat-back for a 4th gen how was the install?

i go for hooker cat back also. i have an 89 iroc tpi 305... and even with stock manifolds, it sounds loud enough, but not hollow sounding like flowmaster crossflow muffler can have. With headers, it raises the noise some if that's what your after, and still sacrifices no sound qualities..... I'd put a hooker cat back with aero chamber muffler on every f-body I'll ever own!!! although, i have'nt heard a corsa yet in person, but a corsa is alo 600-650 bucks. lol so, go for hooker!!!!!!!!!!!!

magnaflow
I like teh sound clips of the magna, if any flowmaster people could get me sound clips of a flowmaster for compairison thatd be cool (maybe record their car heh).
However, i dotn see for the magnaflow cat-back for a 3rd gen, only 93-up.
Also, is there any good programers for the comp?
Thx.

I had a Flowmaster on my 1989 Formula and it sounded pretty good. It rusted fairly quickly though...

You cant beat my set-up, other than the headers dont like that much. But edelbrock headers to a dual cut-outs, to dual hi flow cats to hooker exhaust. The hooker has a nice sound to it, nice and mellow has a bark to it when u give it gas. But with the cut-outs open damn, makes flow-master sound like a **** burner.lol

My vote goes for Hooker because it doesn't make your head hurt after 10 minutes on the highway and you can tell everyone you have a hooker under your car

BTW, that is the setup I have on my car (with Spintech muffler) and I couldn't be more happy - well worth the $800.

4"=overkill on a 305 single or dual. 3" is sufficient for optimal flow until you're making 500+hp as well. The minimal gain for the 3" vs 4" on a "normal" built small block is negligable at best. For a first mod on a tbi 305 a 3" might even be overkill. 4" on an unmodded 305 will most likely COST power. No point in getting the 4" until you need it as even my 3" system scrapes, ground clearance is at a premium on these cars. I don't see any indication that he has a new engine in the works so that extra SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS would be going straight into the trash can.

I agree that a 4" system is overkill on a stock 305. I didn't pay close enough attention to the original post. In regards to ground clearance, my headers are the lowest thing to the ground on my car. The 4" pipe is tucked up out of the way - not a clearance issue.

with the caps off the sound is absolutely insane....ive driven it like that on the street twice, and both times i was afraid for my life, good thing i didnt get caught

need to see routing to show exhaust shop
Im not happy with my SLP on my 412 B4C it is the one with both outlets on one side, I like this design just not the restriction.
There is more noise coming from the inside of my hollowed out cats than from the exhaust tips

Im betting it would sound just fine on a 305, I do know that it would probably hurt power. Stock powerplants (even mildy modified too) of all sorts are hurt by massive reduction in backpressure. Don't believe me? just drop your exhaust at the track right behind the cats and see what happens on a dyno or at the track, its sad but true. I pesonally like the MAC catback (no mustang jokes please). It sounds similar to a flowmaster but not "tinny" more throaty. The difference is that the MAC flowpath even though it may sound similar to flowmaster, only it actually flows. Something a flowmaster short of a competition series cant do. The JYD runs flowmasters, and runs a second faster on the bottle without them. My 4" mufflex that Im putting on the 1991 Drag - Z has a flowmaster, but you can see right through the sucker if I remember correctly. I do remember running a 300 RW HP stang on the flowmasters then swapping them out right there on the dyno for the MAC ones and seeing HP everyhere in the whole band.
BTW, the sound on a dual exhaust car that has a "X" pipe with MAC mufflers is absolutely incredible. The only thing I have ever heard that was better? "X" pipe with borla's but the MAC's were a close second. MAC stuff is very affordable too.

WASTE OF MONEY.
There is no point in arguing this!
$200 vs $800. You could get headers and other mods that actually MAKE power with the money you save. He didn't say anything about putting in a high revving supercharged 427 anytime soon, so a 3" catback is sufficient, perhaps even overkill.

Im verry happy with my magnaflow. It sounds really deep and mellow and sounds mean around 1800-5000RPM and the rest of the exhaust is stock besides a high flow cat. I would highly recomend it. Good luck.

HOOKER Super Competition Exhaust System #16820
1983-92 Chevy Camaro - 305/5.0L Engine Codes H&E
1992 Camaro RS Convertible
305 TBI
Just wanted to share that i just purchased and installed this 3" cat back system. It is a system that is very easy to install and looks great (the dual chrome tips are a ++++).
The exhaust note wasn't as deep as I had hoped it would be. It also does not come with a hanger for the passenger side pipe going into the muffler. This is a stock location with the rubber mount in place. I just had to make my own and it is rock solid.
Like I said it is very easy to install and is straight forward. It was much more of a challenge to take out the old exhaust system.
Thanks
Steve

I'm happy with my Spintech muffler. It sounds great. After I drop the new engine in though, I am thinking about going with a 3" cat-back along with my 2055s hookers. But the only thing is, spintech doesn't make a 3" cat-back (and I have to have another spintech). So I've typed to mufflex time and time again asking them if they make a 3" cat-back with a spintech race muffler, but since there tech support absolutely SUCKS, I have yet to get a reply. I know on their website all they show is 3.5" and 4" cat-backs, but that is overkill like said above. So I was just wondering if they would make a 3" cat back. Later.

I guess I gave a direct answer to a vague question, which I seem to do quite often. I am stating what I believe to be the best sysemt while at the same time being the best sounding exhaust system. Price wasn't stated as being an issue. I guess you're replying about what exhaust would be best for the original posters setup. I thought he wanted to know what exhaust system sounded the best. He never said, which exhaust system would be or sound best on his car in the original post. So really the question was misleading.

Good choice. I found an exhaust shop near me that does mandrel bending, so I guess I'll get it all custom made. Screw mufflex, they just lost a customer by not responding to me, regardless if they will make a 3" cat back or not. I think I want to go with spintech's pro shoot out race muffler.

I ordinarily don't reply to a thread that's this long because the original question is usually answered by this time. The reason why I am is for those who have never seen my custom exhaust. It is a true 2-1/2" dual system that follows the stock routing. And because of the routing, ground clearance is not an issue. I use a pair of polished Stainless Works 1969 Z28 chambered mufflers positioned in the stock muffler location, exiting thru chromed 4th gen Z28 tips. For detailed pics, please click on "SC Z!!!" in my sig, then Exhaust at the bottom of the page. For a sound clip, go to:
http://www.iroc-zpostforum.com/MemberWillie.htm
The sound clip is of my 305 with 1-3/4" SLP headers, dual cats, and NO supercharger.
Just thought you guys would want to see a unique system. BTW, I love the way it looks and sounds!!!

After my exhaust started to split apart from the cat back I figured it was time to get a new exhaust. I decide to just put on a new cat and have it straight back after that and it sounds pretty awsome especially after 3000rpms. There was a good horse power gain to. Before I put the new exhaust on it wouldnt cut out but after I put it on it has enough power for the speed limiter to kick in, damn thing.

Best Exaust System
I recently had a V-Force muffler, new tail pipes, and stainless-steel tips installed on my 1989 Fomula 350. I think it sounds pretty good. I was told, by the exaust guy, that the V-Force mufflers are not as loud as the Flowmasters. Since I don't have a flowmaster to compare sound to, I cannot confirm this. However, I do know that the V-Force mufflers have nice, thick welds.
Hope this helps.
