Don't think that Moble 1 is the best and only oil to buy just because everyone else is using it. Do your own research and decide what oil YOU want, not what oil EVERYONE ELSE wants. I have found that Mobil 1 does have a few downsides to it. I have even found what I feel to be a better motor oil. I use Schaffer's synthetic myself, but believe it or not, Shell's generic shellzone motor oil with a BG additive is an awsome lubricant.

I think the main reason why so many people use Mobil 1 is because it is so available in stores. And I think people take mobil 1 more seriously as a synthetic more so than valvoline or castrol. I'm going to put it in my tacoma and 4-runner next oil change, but it will have to wait for the camaro until I put in a new engine. Later.

I think there was a study somebody posted a while back that showed Castrol was the best dino oil, so that's the only reason I use it. Valvoline came in second I think. It showed like flash point, pour point, % ash, and a bunch of other stuff on each brand.

Well I used to use Quaker State oil on all my cars but after I saw a Quaker State commercial (Suburban towing semi-truck) on TNN TV which pissed me off so I quit using Quaker State and I started using Mobile 1 synthetic
What makes synthetic oil superior to conventional oil?
Historically, conventional oils lack the performance of synthetic oils in the areas of low-temperature performance and high-temperature oxidation stability. Conventional motor oil is made up of an inconsistent mixture of long and short chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms. In the extreme heat of an engine, short-chain molecules can evaporate, and unstable molecules can oxidize and break down. Conventional oils also contain much greater amounts of impurities, such as sulfur, reactive and unstable hydrocarbons, and other undesirable contaminants that cannot be completely removed by conventional refining of crude oil.
Mobil 1® with SuperSyn™ uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application.

Mobile one and valvoline, depending on which vehical-
Also, for those who don't know, napa oil is valvoline....
Anyways, castrol, and penzoil have some of the worst oils out there- i saw the tests done before my eyes at a local fairly big time machine shop... the heat test was the one that amazed me (temperature at which the oil starts to break down). Of course the mobile one syn and other synthetics performed good, but for conventianal oils the mobile and valvoline held up the best... penzoil was next to crappiest and castrol was the crappiest.
granted, this was done 2-3 years ago, so they areprobably a good oil now, but just based on what i saw- i wouldnt use anything other an valvoline or mobile oils. (besdies amsoil and royal purple, but they are up there with mobile one synth!)

I was going to post a question about this but since so many people here are talking about motor oil I will ask now. Is it better to break an engine in on convention oil then switch to sythenic? I have always heard, but that doesn't mean its true, that the engine wont break in correctly with a synthetic. My question is this, they put Mobil 1 in corvettes, porshces and some other exotics from the factory. Do they break the engine in with regular oil then switch it? I'd say probably not. If its good enough to put in a 50,000 vette or a 250,000 porsche, what is wrong putting it in my 406?
I didn't know the answer to this when I put my 406 together so it has SAE 30 in it now and after the break in it will get mobil 1 or royal purple.
Also another question, I have also heard that switching to synthetic will cause problems, leaks mainly. Why is this? I read on post on here or on the CZ28.com board about a guy putting in a quart of synthetic oil in every time he changes his oil, 4 quarts regular and 1 quart synthetic, then 3 quarts and 2 quarts and so on. If I would have been thinking I would ask him what in the hell he was thinking because that just doesn't sound like a good idea. He will be one of those guys who say that sythentic oil is junk because the idiot was mixing it.

Must have not been the same test I saw....castrol came out on top on almost every test over valvoline (as I can remember). Don't get me wrong, I think valvoline makes great products too. Now when you say "crappiest", what are you talking about? Is this your personal opinion, or can we have facts to back that up? I will try and look for that test I was talking about.

For all you fans of synthetic oil - how often are you changing it ? I don't doubt that it has some beneficial qualities over regular oil but at about 4x's the cost of regular oil I can't justify using it AND changing oil every 3k miles like i see customers do all day long at the dealership.
half the techs will tell you it's about FREQUENCY of oil change not necessarily what brand/type the other half say synthetic is better-period. So who knows...

mobile however recomends 10k intervals on the oil, but they recomend replacing the filter every 3k, and adding 1qt of new oil.

I think we have a pretty good poll of oil users. What about filters? Me personally, I have always used Fram. The store by my house is now stocking K&N oil filters and I was wondering if anybody uses them. Obviously K&N is notorious for their excellent air filters so why wouldn't they make the best oil filters.

Yep, that's the proof that synthetics are superior to dino oil. I just can't justify puting synthetic oil in my camaro when I just pulled all 8 plugs yesterday and they were all fouled....time for a new eninge, then the synthetic. lol
