Recon Crate engines
hey i was just ready to buy my 350HO for 2000 when i went to a local car parts shop and saw this company, recon. i want to hear good and bad stories about them. also, what do you think of this motor?
1969-79 383 CHEVY "STROKER" 708502 HP
- New "Scat" Cast Steel Stroker Crankshaft
- 383 C.I. "383 Stroker"
- 350 Horsepower
- Four Bolt Main
- 2.02 Intake/1.60 Exhaust Valves
- 5.7" Connecting Rods and Double Roller Timing Chain
- Hardened Push Rods and Moly Rings
- Flat Top Hypereutectic Pistons (10.0/1 COMPRESSION)
- Cam Duration: Intake (292 Degrees) Exhaust (300 Degrees)
- Cam Lift: Intake (.490) Exhaust (.490)
its not smogged, and retails for 2200. i think it is rear wheel horsepower too, but i am not sure. it seems pretty heavy duty for just 350 at the flywheel. anyone have any experience with these guys? it wont be a daily driver so i am not too worried about getting 100k miles outta it. thanks

That doesnt look too impressive, except for the price. That seems like quite a big cam too, I dont know how that will drive. Also they cant measure rwhp on an engine becuase it varies with the car that its in. As far as reliability goes, I would guess that its ok. We put a recon 350 in my friends 78 z28 and it seemed ok. He probably has 70k miles or so on it now. Its performance isnt anything special either, its rated at 325hp, but with a holley 750cfm carb, edelbrock intake, and headman headers, it still doesnt seem like 325hp. With the gm crate 330hp 350 available for less money, I think it would be hard for anyone not to recommend it. Plus, the gm engine is known to be very good quality and will serve as a good base for later upgrades. Another advantage to the gm engine is you can pick them up at local dealerships and save a bit of money on shipping. Good luck with whatever engine you wind up with.

i was just thinking that a 383 could be a better base to start with. with all that cool stuff (2.02 intake, 1.6 exh, 10:1 compression, the 383 factor lol, like you said a big cam), i am wondering if this engine is underrated majorly? any other ideas?
