Alarms, what kinds do you guys use?

I have a 91 RS and was thinking about getting an alarm. I was thinking of getting a Viper 600ESP. Do any of you have one of these and if so do you like it? What other styles and brands do you use? Any info and opinions would be appreciated.

Right now I'm running an APS-100 Prestige system from Audiovox. It came with the car. I know it makes noise if someone hits the car of opens the door while it's activated. I'm not sure if it has any other features though. Never took the time to check it out.

my 92 RS came with an old viper 300 it's not a bad alarm, i don't really use it when i'm out it's for if someone wants to mess with my car @ home. If you are looking for a sure way to not have your car stolen wire up a starter kill switch (or 2) instead of the alarm, alot cheaper and more effective. I don't know but that 600 probably comes with one, whichever alarm you choose a starter kill is a must.

I have the Viper 600ESP! Its a great alarm system. I also have the optional remote start. But,you need to tell the Viper guys NOT to program the system to automatically unlock the doors when the engine is turned off. That feature is cool if you always drive with doors locked. The problem I had was that it kicked the door unlocked too forcefully. (I didn't realize it at the time) Now the auto door locks in my car are screwed. If I press the door to LOCK, it hardly budges the little slide. And I end up having to manually push it over. Sort of takes the fun out of having remote door locks. Good Luck!!!!!!!

i bought an audiovox something or other, it has all the features. i just bought it as a status kinda thing, to make it look like i care about my car. where i live has one of the lowest stolen car rates in the country. it has every feature, and the shock sensor is really sensitive, i had a problem with my cat sleeping on my car, not anymore. sounds pathetic but thats the main use with mine

I have an Alpine that I have had nothing but trouble out of. The brain has been replaced twice. It is a piece of s***. A $300 piece of s***.

At least the keyless entry and hatch release parts still work.

On my toyota i have a viper es300, something like that. it came with an extra battery so if they unhook my battery it will still come on, dual shock detectors, disables the ignition when the car is armed, a valet switch, and it was like 300 installed, which was a pretty good deal. i got it to protect my stereo investment, dont think your **** cant get stolen. i came out one morning and my car was up on blocks (the toyota) and my rims, tires, subs, amp, cd player, cd's, oakley's, and a buncha other little **** were all gone. and i live in the nice part of town on a dead end street. lol.

I install alarms for a living and I'll tell you what I see come back, alpine. Its a pain it the *** to install and always comes back for adjustment or replacement. I have yet to meet an installer that liked alpine. I like DEI- ie. viper, rattler. I have a viper on both my cars. I have an 800 on my 1996 Z24 and an 600esp on my camaro, it has everything you need, the auto locks are nice, starter kill on all but the "wasp" model. Nice options availible. I have a proximity sensor on both, dual shock sensors a glass break sensor on my camaro and power windows and sunroof control on my cavalier. I also can pop my rear hatch and trunk on both cars. I have back-up batteries and 2 extra loud sirens on both cars. So in my opinion as an installer go with viper. Jered 1983 SS

You're probably better off asking about this in the car audio forum...you'll get a few more responses there.

The truth is, any car alarm is probably 10% product and 90% installation. You should be shopping around for an installer, not an alarm brand.

That being said, it's my (installer) opinion that DEI products are the best. Also, Black Widow is pretty decent, and incredibly easy to install.

Find a good installer you can trust, and buy what he recommends.

LOLOLOLOOLOLOL, in response to the last post about the installer,
i was just thinking, hmm... i wonder if this guy lives near. i dont know where offallen or whatever is. but if you live near chicago. theres a bestbuy with an installer that im going to go see soon.
to put it simple this guy is, "The Man"
he gets really personal with each car he does. ive seen his work, he installs DEI.
im getting a DEI sys, with these commands:
Door unlock
Hatch Pop,
window down
window up
window vent
car start
car off
car pager (so you know to get your "Big beat down stick" and run to car)
shock sensor
dual zone sensor
starter kill
tilt sensor (rims)
extra batteries.
who knowes how many horns
Oh and this kik asz sensor. you tell the car you want it to stay @ "40 degrees" to keep your beer cold. if it starts heating up it turns on cools it down then shuts off.
or lets say that if you wake up, every morning at 6:30, and leave at 7:00, at 6:50 it will turn on and warm up.

i actually put in a couple things that are options, but most im getting.

anyways. sometime i wanna get a big thirdgen meeting going. for IL.

Oh yeah baby, you can do all that with an alarm. Plus the better DEI alarms let you control additional relays so that you can control any number of other 12v accessories (some examples I've seen are the radio, undercar neons, and hydraulics (on this guy's truck)...

How much was yours FireBretha? They priced mine at about $700 (whew!).

hey rare, yep, you can, and i you can do more, lights, stereo, etc, neons.
i think the models the v5000,
before your friend installs, does he do it regurlarly?
is he certified?
i ask because i talked to my guy, for quite a while on the phone. and he said that after getting most of it put in, most typical systems need tweaking to make sure everythings ok. so be careful with him. i can understand your feelings of saving the cash, but when it comes to your car alarm going off every time you park your car, it wont be worth it because hell, after awhile your neghbors will ignore it.
oh, list goes on
one touch windows, hold three sec, window rollls down
ok, if i was to get the alarm, window module, and a couple other modules, i think it was gonna be around 250ish. but thats only with like three modules, and my list goes past three. ill be going back to him later on so he can wire up other things as time goes on. oh, i remember now. one remote DEI has, has 60 channels, so the list can go on. i fergot theyre website, but if you type in DEI electronics into hotbot.com it comes up, then go into alarm accesories, and you can see everyting.
ok, 6Am, i just had to let dog out, back to bed....

ok, just got back from best buy, the installer is the greatest.

ok, this is all i got:
All of its DEI.
DEI 6500,
Door lock/unlock
two sirens
hatch release

now for the goodies
Pager (when car goes off)
Temp Time (IE: everymorning at 7:00 the car will start and warm up) (IE: keep car @ 70 Deg. starts and cools or heats)
two Piezos (127 decibel horns, 127or117)
battery back up
range extender
window up/down/vent

Later:
Engine Rev.
neons.
radio
amp rack.

anyways, for the stuff, id recommend working there to get it, (went from like 900$ to 343)
but install is gonna be nother 300.

ill get more info later.

Ok back to the topic... Not to bust any good theories on alarms but unless it has auto freq. change it is far from protection. Well surfice it to say I had a freind in Va with a laptop computer and a emmiter that would open garage doors at will...Just to be a nusance of course... And used to set off the alarms of cars continuously... It apears there is a freq. that none of them like and it automacticly sets them off.

How do those proximity sensors actually work? How do they sense that someone has walked near your car? Are they triggered by a cat or dog walking by?

I have a DEI rattler, same as viper without much upgradability. It was $300 for the alarm installed with a proximity sensor and a starter kill(keyless entry too). I like it, it works great. Beats getting my car stolen again.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.
WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING when i spent 1800$ when i coulda had the MATTTEW SYSTEMS,

LOLOLOLOL...
thats good. lol..
how does it interact with small barking chiuaha dogs?

the prox sense is in your center console, and is sensitive enough that you can have it "feel' movement outside your car, one time i saw a car drive by and the alarm Tweeked at it....

so then stage two is much more sensitive and can be set so once it feels inside it sends signal and activates the alarm...

helps??
