Not happy with ProForm distributor
Bought a ProForm distributor from Jeg's the other day. It was defective due to their production design. The plate that the cap bolts to is a piece of sheetmetal placed over the distributor shaft. Even after you bolt down the hold down clamp, there is nothing preventing the plate and cap from rotating. Therefore, it is impossible to keep the timing at any setting.
Called Jeg's tech support, and they said, "yeah, it's a crummy design, but for a cheap distributor, what do you expect?" $179.99 is cheap? And if it's so crummy, why carry it?
So be it. Jeg's is out to make money, not help me. No big deal there. But I stand by my thumbs-down on Proform. Went to Napa and bought a rebuilt. Much cheaper, and the shaft and cap plate are cast as one unit. Hafta buy your own cap/rotor though. $109 with $40 core charge.

Actually, no. The distributor said "made in USA" on it. Doesn't matter whether the machine that stamps them out is manned by an American union worker or a 5 year old Malaysian, if the product is engineered by an accountant, it's going to suck. Wherever it came from, it's on it's way back right now.
The catalog lists it as GM, but Proform makes it for GM.

You think maybe they forgot the drop a couple of spot welds?
It doesn't matter! I never had a distributor that wasn't a one piece design.
MSD makes a quality piece with a bigger shaft, yada-yada & very accurate for timing. So if you ever want to upgrade the stock piece, your safe with an MSD...There costly though$$

Well, whatever...
Just wanted to share my experiences with others so they don't have to make the same mistake. Dunno where it's made, don't care.
Moral of the story: Stay away from distributors from Proform or GM.

I have the same distributor and after having my project car going for a very short time it has already moved on me about 3 times in 25 miles. I'm probably gonna toss it in favor of MSD. There was another guy I know who had the same problem, so he pulled one out of his blazer and never had a problem again.
