Ugh! Dont go to speedomotive! They use cheap parts and they know very little about engines... I have two friends with their engines and first-hand experience with how bad they are.

I'd stick with GMPP engines, or a local engine builder you know and trust.

I had a ZZ4 Crate motor in a '77 Camaro. I bought it from a local Chevrolet dealer. I loved the motor. It ran very strong and drove very easily.

Uh, are we talking about the same http://www.speedomotive.com/ ? They've been doing strokers since 1946 and you say they don't know much about engines? Also did your friends get kits or long/short blocks? I've been running my stroker hard for two years now with zero problems. I'm talking track runs also, even if it's a 3 hour drive I will do it and run all day and drive home. I call that a reliable race engine. Street/strip tested. Thank you. And a great price also.
They do have bottom end stuff but let you upgrade to anything you want. Cheapest priced performance crate motors around.

Have to agree with John. They do top quality work. My 383 has been riden hard and put up wet, 150 shot of GOGO juice, And never lets me down.

Yep, that SpeedoMotive. You know they've moved at least 3 times in the last 5 years... I wonder why. They may have been good in the past, but lately they suck. One friend bought a 400 small block engine from them. From the beginning it sucked oil, idled terrible, and didnt make the advertised power. He went back to talk to them about it, and they basically told him "tough crap". Then when they found out he is a lawyer, they got all apologetic and offered to redo the engine, but instead they gave him his money back and he went elsewhere.
The other friend purchased a 383 kit from them, using Sportsman II heads. He told them it was a street car, he wanted torque, good gas mileage, and has to pass California emissions. They put the heads on untouched, didnt clearance the heads for the centerbolt valve covers, and didnt open up the EGR passages. They used a roller block, but sold him a flat tappet cam with 110 lobe centers because "it will make more power". That engine also burned oil, a quart every 800 miles, ran like crap, had no torque until 4000 RPMs, and got 9-10 miles per gallon. The guy took it to my dad to "fix it". He called Speedomotive and they told him to bring the engine to them to look at. They offered to rebuild it for free. When my dad got it back, he found they hadnt cleaned up the pistons, they put cheap rings on it, and didnt even hone the block. Also, they threw out the lifters, making the flat tappet cam worthless. When my dad called to ask them about it, they told him "tough crap" and "they dont save used lifters".

For these reasons, I am putting SpeedoMotive on the blacklist. Yah, they have cheap prices, but you get what you pay for.

What does your car run John? Just curious. I am probably going to go through American Speed or Golens Engine Service. They have motors designed for 86-92 TPI cars.

I, too, have heard that Speedo has been hurting the last 12mo or so. Not verified by me and not sure what "hurting" means, but I heard it from 2 seperate individuals that work "in the industry".

I vote for ZZ4 short block, FastBurn heads, GMPP HotCam with GMPP 1.6 SA roller Rockers. Basically, a FastBurn 385 with the Hot Cam and 1.6 rockers added. No bull 430hp/400+lb-ft with only a 218/228 @.050" duration camshaft. Great numbers and quite streetable. Too, has a warranty that should be honored unless GM goes out of business....

I had the gmpp vortec headed crate engine. It was rated at 330hp/~370ft/lb from gm. I had the heads worked over - springs, valve job, port, ect and added the XE268 cam w/ 1.6rr's. It ran pretty hard in a 5 speed IROC - I did go the cheap route however, and used a the rpm intake and holley DP instead of tpi.

I don't have a current 1/4 mile run but it does 8.56 @ 81.67mph in the 1/8 mile.
I am limited from getting into the 7's by the STOCK TPI intake I'm currently running.
