Hurst Dual gate automatic shifter
About a week ago I ordered a catalog from yearone.com for 82-02 Camaro's and Firebirds. It came in the mail a few days back so I took it straight to my personal reading spot (bathroom). I started looking through it and much to my surprise I come across the baddest Automatic shifter I have ever seen. The Hurst Dual/Gate 2 shifter. I am definatly getting this shifter. Rather costly at $230 but it looks so cool I can't resist it. It's custom fit for 83 - 92 Camaros, and it is so awesome. You guys have to check it out seriously. The picture on the site doesn't show it too good, but on the left side is P R N OD D 2 1 , then on the right side is 4321.

My question is will that shifter fit without hacking up the stock console? Looks clean in the picture, but can you put your original back in without having to buy any console plates, ETC.

You have to cut the stock console plate at the line below the ashtray, but you could use them again after cutting.

I have one. It doesn't come with half the screws and bolts you need, but other then that it does fit better then the B&M and you dont have to cut and splice wiring. Although my stock reverse light switch kept coming out of the place it was supposed to be so I just siad forget it and don't have reverse lights.
The shifter it's self is fun! Takes some getting used to, to shift it right but it's worked fine for me so far.

I originally thought mine had hardware missing when I got it too, but it turned out that it was more assembled from the factory than the instructions indicated.

Apart from cutting the factory plate, it's literally a bolt-in. The factory park-lock and shifter cables are used and just snap right in. The factory park/neutral/reverse switch and its associated wiring is used too.
As far as I'm concerned the best thing about it is that it's not made by B&M.

Yeah, I have that catalog too, I think it would be cool to grab one of those and a Hurst badge, kinda retro. Anybody know if those will fit in the Trans Am's? Or are they strictly a camaro thing?

I'm changing the 200C in my 83 TA for a TH350.
Anyone know if the dual gate will work with a TH350 - it seems to be for a 700R4??

I have the shifter to, havent gotten to drive the car really but it seems great so far, mine was missing a few bolts and clips to which was a pain and part of my instructions were missing but if you go to their site, they have them their. It uses the factory cable you may have to adjust it a little but it is very easy, the install for me was kind of a pain just because you are working in such a small place and the whole thing takes up all the space. It comes with a new shifter plate which is great because most you have to cut your factory one, the only thing you have to cut is the ashtray off your old cover.

What kind of tool would be best to use to cut trough the old cover. I want a professional looking cut, not one of the zig-zag shaggy ones I usually do.
Thanks,
Steve

An air-powered cutoff tool for the sides. A dremel with a cutoff wheel can work in a pinch, but the diameter is so small you'd need to cut the corners with a reciprocating saw with fine-toothed blade. Go easy.. Old plastic is brittle. I like the cutoff wheel because at just the right speed it heats up the plastic enough that you won't break anything, just slightly bend it if you were to accidentally put some weight on it or something. The reciprocating action of a jigsaw is enough to snap or shatter bits of the plastic if a tooth catches or you let it get out of control.

Hey to cut the shifter plate, I used a hacksaw the thin blade fits perfectly in the groove you need to cut and takes only a couple minutes and it looks like a machine cut it. I have heard that these shifters are discontinued but I could be wrong.

I just used a fine-tooth hacksaw blade. You cut right through the groove between the ashtray "panel" and the shifter "panel".

Does anyone have any pics? I would really like to see a better pic of how it looks. Also how does it work? You can use it like normal or shift it manually or something?

Apeiron- as far as the cutting, all you cut is between the ash tray and shifter plate? Because I know that, right now, it is all one piece. What is the point of cutting it? Is it true that with the B&M, you really have to hack the **** out of you shifter plate? I think I am going to go with the Hurst. -89IRO

Okay ive got a 1989 Firebird with the TH-700-R4 and would it fir and can you actually shift from 1st to 2nd and so on?

i was really interested in this shifter a while back. i searched a lot, and couldnt find really anybody who put one into their firebird. the concensus seemed to be that the shifter is designed for the camaro, and it would take a lot of customizing to fit it into a firebird.

Yup, but the ashtray on the 4th gen console wont open cause the dual gate is huge. Don't matter 6 speed swap starts next week.

Sorry guys, I know this is really old, but I need info on this Hurst shifter. Can someone please tell me of the places I can get this thing? I've only seen it at classic industries and they want $259 for it. Too bad it isn't all over the place like the mega****er. Also, I hear some people saying it includes everything and others say they are missing stuff...what's the deal? I would like to know the rough procedure for installing this thing.....will I just have to take the stock shifter plate off, and it will drop right in, or will I have to remove the ENTIRE consol? I ask because I will soon be getting my carpet done, and I am not sure if I should do the carpet first of the shifter first...? Cause I hate to work around and tear up my new carpet if that's what it takes to install it. Thanks guys.

I am interested to know if this works with a th350, the one description in year one says it will also work with forward or reverse pattern valve bodies, they cant be talking about 700's there can they? Please someone that has one please peek at the set of destructions and tell me if this would work with a reverse pattern TH350. I think it would be nice in my trans brake blown 1991 Z28 project. I am also curious what is to be done with the shift pattern indicator onb the plate if you run it with a 3 speed instead of a 4 speed auto and how they have you install it if the valve body is reverse pattern. Its either this or the mega shifter. I know when I ran a megashifter in my 82 years ago it came with parts to lock out the 3 to 4 shift, clear shift indicator plates for 3 speed reverse and forward as well as 4 speed forward, and instructions for all of it. Do they still? or does the hurt have this too?

Cool, thanks, that would be great to see a close-up. I got a question for you guys....on the hurst shifter (or any performance shifter for that matter), you know how you can bang the gears and it won't allow you to skip or go into the next gear? Well, how does the shifter know to let you go onto the next gear when it is time?.....like you bang from first to second....it won't let you get past second....but when it's time to go into third, how does the shifter know to let you shift into third? Sorry for the stupid quesiton, just though I'd ask.

the B&M works like a ratchet with a stop. So that you can only "clunk" one gear at a time unless you lift the "T" lockout.

Alright, one question for ya. Say you go through a race and the shifter is currently in the 4th gear race gate, you are done racing but still moving, can you switch back into the street gate while still moving? Or do you have to be stopped to do it?
