Is there one best aftermarket fuel injection system?

If anyone has any knowledge of the different aftermarket fuel injection systems out there, please let me know what you think of them (performance, fuel economy, ease of tuning, compatability with mods, emissions, etc). I'm looking for a new car right now and don't know what kind to look for. I had been looking for a 5 speed TPI car (but they are hard to find and a little pricy), but am starting to think that I will only be able to find TBI in my price range. Then I had an idea.....why not find out about aftermarket complete fuel injection systems that I can bolt to the top of the carb'd 350 out of my old car and stick it in whatever the best body/interior with a manual is that I can find! I guess the fact that I am stuck on having a manual tranny makes this harder than it would be if I didn't care, and I'd really rather not have to cut through the floor and firewall to do an auto to manual swap.

ebay motors (type in "TPI" for a search term) is probably the best way to upgrade to TPI. Complete induction setups(plenum, runners, base, injectors, rails, wiring, sensors, computer, etc.,..) come up quite often, and sell in the $500 to $700 range. Extras like intake ducting, camshafts, etc.,.. can be found elsewhere(like in the "For Sale" section of thirdgen.org) and will probably set you back another $200.

Aftermarket EFI tends to be on the pricey side. $1500 usually gets the computer, wiring harness and software, but the hardware is usually extra.

As for best, everyone will prolly have their fav, but I think Electromotive's TEC II is the most sophisticated(and the only one I've seen that speaks MAF - digital at that). Then again for the $2000+ for this system, you could put a hefty down on a complete TPI motor which has a vehicle attached.

I recently purchased Speed Pro's EFI setup. It comes with a wide band o2 sensor which provides the best way to tune a car based on oxygen sensor technology. its very accurate. You dial in what you want your air/fuel ratio to be @ a certain RPM vs. MAP (load on engine) and the computer does the work for you. It trims injector pulse widths, or opens them up to meet the AF ratio you input. After that its little fine tuning and you are there.

I paid just a hair over $2000 for the setup including tax and shipping though. Its a bit pricey but I will never have to buy another ECU again and the best part if i sell this car, I can always swap the ECU to another car.

Thanks for the answers guys. I've been watching them show up. Still doing the car shopping though. I like the idea of something aftermarket that is easily tuneable. Just not sure what route I'm going to go yet....(maybe sell out and get an early second gen lacking engine)...but I hate to go non thirdgen.

I've got the Edelbrock Pro Flo #3500 and I like it alot. About $1900 for the COMPLETE setup. Fairly easy to tune, and doesn't require a laptop.
On the other hand, if money was not an issue, I would have probably bought the Accel setup. I personally would prefer using the laptop over a small handheld module and the system is more configurable than the Edelbrock (it has extra outputs that will allow you to control your torque convertor lockup, a nitrous solenoid, etc).

PROCHARGED,

Where did you get your TEC-II? I've asked around and always been quoted $2000+(US $). I've seen in person how easy it is to set-up this system(in comparison to recalibrating the factory PROM), but at the price I've been quoted I couldn't justify it.

But at the price you mentioned,...
