Airbox mod?

Airbox mod?
What airbox mod can I do to my 92 formula 305TPI. What if I use the airlid from the airbox, and place it on top of the K&N air filter I have. Then set that configuration where the stock airbox used to be. ? The only bad thing I can think of is water getting in if I hit a puddle. I have the K&N drop in filter.

I heard it was a rip off too. Basically I'm looking for a mod I can do that is completely safe. I do not want any water in the engine. I dont like the idea of having an intake scoop located outside or beneath the car. I would also like to keep my stock elbow. The throttle body mounted K&N filter isnt that great either.
I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do. I think I'm just going to stick the airlid on the filter and place it where the airbox used to be. I have only one question..will it still suck in cold air? The airbox extension duct looks like it has a purpose.
thanks guys.
