I had some pics of the intake and exhaust ports, but the pc that the pics were on died! They look like any ported and blended head, but what really looks nice is the bowl job that was done on them. When the machine shop pulled the valves out when the enlarged the spring pockets for the new comp springs, I didn't have my camera on me at the time so I never got any pics of that. But that is what you would want to see! If I ever have to pull the heads off for any reason, I'll be sure to take a ton of pics from all angles.

The bowl job on mine looks a little better, but the intake ports look very close. I'd have to mic the openings to get the exact size of the intake and exhaust ports. Hopefully I wont have the pull the heads anytime soon, but if I do I will get all the measurements and pics posted up! The shop that I got the heads from is Sun Racing here in TX. I dont have the number handy but if you need it, I'll dig for it.

That's a nice set of vortecs. Like Mike said, could use a little more bowl work. Just work the guides a bit and make them smaller, more "tear-drop". I'll take some pics of mine for you guys to see. I've got mine off right now playing around a little. Mine aren't vortecs, just some open-chamber 993's. I've got over 20hrs each on them...just wish I knew someone w/ a flow bench. I think you'll find Mike's look a lot like mine.

PBF on Kaley does, $45 for the chamber, $20 each thereafter.

Your combo looks alot like mine when im ready to finnaly fire it up... What are you shifting at and can those SLP runners keep up?

Im also curious about your heads, i didnt catch what CC runners they had?

I will be using AFR 195's as they come, and a much smaller cam XE262 but it will be flat tappet (pre 86 block) so it will sound as rough as yours but actually be quite crappier heh..

I've got a video (with sound) of the XE262 on that motor but without the TPI yet...

geocities.com/kingtaling/fordan.mpg

does yours sound a bit more radical than that? I may yet swap the cam when i put on the TPI.... How does it feel up top?

Kevin89 -

I'm either going to take it to Houston Performance (a mustang shop unfortunately) or MTI - motor sport technologies (the LS-1 guys). Both shops have good dyno's. I think I was quoted $75 for 3 pulls, but I will call again for pricing when I get ready to bring the car down there. I dont live in Harris county, so where I'm at there is no emissions yet. When there eventually is, I'll just drive to college station and get the car inspected there.

KingtalOn -

the site with the .mpg didnt pull up for me (no worky)
I dont remember what the runners cc'd at after the porting. Sorry to be so negative, but I'm not a big fan of AFR heads. I know a bunch of guys who run them and even the ported ones didn't flow all that well for what they cost, plus their customer service sucks! Look at the GM performance crate motor (ZZ430). It's a 430hp crate motor with out of the box fastburn heads. Take a set of fastburns to the machine shop, port and polish them and you'll have a set of heads that flow better (especially at lower lift) than the AFR's.

I shift at 5,500 - 5,600. With the stock runners on my combo, it seemed to fall on it's face after 5,000. With the SLP's and all the porting I did on them, the plenum, and the SDPC vortec intake base, it pulls alot stronger through the WHOLE rpm range 1,000 - 6,000. Eventhough I probably make peak power at 5,500 or so, it still feels strong to 6,000, no more falling on it's face. However I wont know where I'm really supposed to shift at until I have the car dyno'd. I'll make three 6,000r pulls and go from there.

And the Cam sounds pretty damn nice. It almost sounds like a healthy solid roller cam! If I can borrow my girlfriend's parent's digital camcorder, I'll make an .mpg for you guys, you'll just have to post it for me.

Mike - still sounds like things are getting better. Can't wait to see some #'s.

86 IROC

Thanks for the tip. I have all my head work done by Rusty's Cylinder heads down in Cape Coral(I'm originally from Fort Myers). I grew up around the guy, so he treats me really well. He's good and his guy Matt is really good w/ SBC heads. I did all my porting myself at his shop with Matt coming by and glancing over my shoulder from time to time. We moved the roofs of the runners up almost 1/8in., squared all sides, smoothed the floors, completely smoothed the bowls, and the guides are slightly more than tapers to guide the air over the brass(actual valve guide).
These babies will flow all a GM head possibly can.

Update:

Well, the next round of mods are about to go on!

1. New driveshaft (Inland imperial) Aluminum (the stock steel DS vibrates BAD at 100+ mph and I even had it balanced!)
2. New discoveries in the PROM that should help out ALOT
3. Synthetic motor oil (mobil 1 - 10w 30 with wix huge filter)
4. New collector gaskets
5. VSS functioning again (this damn sensor controls more than you would think!!!)
6. Synthetic ATF for T-56 (Castrol Syntec ATF)

Then she will get one or two trips on the scanner for PROM check and or adjustment.

AND WE'RE OFF TO DYNOLAND!!

1bad91z...just outta curiousity how much do you have invested in that engine? Im really debating keeping my car stock, just for classic/show value to have the #'s match, or making it haul ***, which would take a new engine cuz i only have a 305 tbi. But im also a poor college student, who decided to restore an 83 buick...so i was wondering how much an engine similar to yours would be. And also..what do you do for a livin man? Seems you're always changing something

I have roughly $2,200 - $3,000 in the motor (keep in mind, I did most of the assembly) closer to $3,000 if you want to include the $600 coated hooker long-tubes.

Do you own a third gen camaro/firebird? If not, I personally wouldn't invest that much money stepping up a buick, unless it was a T-Type Regal or a GN. And if you had one of those, I would send you to Conely's performance. With mild mods, 10's are pretty easy (I love turbo cars!)

Remember that no matter what, the more labor you can and are willing to do yourself, the more money that can be spent on more mods!

I'm a manager of Information Technology Operations. And I dont really get to spend alot on the car, (remember, I've had my car for almost four years). Thats a long time to save for parts, collect parts, find stuff cheaper at swap meets, etc..... But yea, the car is KILLER!!

If it was me, I would build the RS and use the Buick as a daily driver.

I learned what I know from growing up with and hanging out with friends that had and have fast cars and the rest was all me (trial and error). Chilton's and Haynes manuals help out quite a bit. If you know how to turn a wrench and know how to read, it's just a matter of getting in there and learning. Dont be afraid to tackle a project like brakes, intake swaps, etc... Just learn as you go. The more you do yourself, the faster you will learn everything else.

MODERATOR - can you please delete the above post from a "MartL"? This is getting kinda rediculous. The powers that be may want to invest in a better firewall or filter for this kind of crap.

No, and no! I would love to get some solid numbers, but right now all I can do is guess at 400hp. It sure as hell runs like it.

Just because I have never posted a pic on this board before, there's no reason to be a tool.

I want a parachute on my car too!!

Is that your car?! If it is, it's bad ***!

I was plannin on building an engine similar to yours in the future. It would be awesome if I needed a parachute b/c the stock 10.5" rotors don't do squat.

If you want to link an image from somewhere on the internet, this is what you do:

take the link.... http://www.siteaddress.com and put img tags around it. the tags are like this [img] http://www.siteaddress.com[/img]

just delete the space between the first tag and the address (all one word).

Sorry to disappoint ya, but that's not my ride. Mine is a '91 Z-28 (with the big 91-92 rear spoiler). That pic was just a cool ride that I wanted to share. If my buddy can come back out to my shop this weekend, I'll make sure he doesn't leave without taking some pics of the Z. I'll get motor / interior / body pics for you guys that are interested. I think you guys will like it, it's a pretty clean ride.

Looks great to me Mike! 3rd gens rock don't they? They just look awesome an almost any trim(stock to tubs). -

As for the parachute, guys come on now, it does nothing below 65, and you do have to repack it everytime you flip it. Hell we haven't put one on my old man's big block blower car yet, and he's running low 5's in the 1/8th...

later, justin...

Yea, the parachute pic was just a teaser cause I didn't have pics of mine yet. Then my buddy came over with a nice camera and we finally got to take some pics of the Z.

And I agree with you ****, I've always been partial to thirdgen Camaro's myself! Thats why I built the Z instead of a vette.

Update:

I have the PROM very close to being right. Still have a little more to go. It idles alot better and pulls a little stronger. I also put my ram-air boxes back in. As soon as I get some free $$$, I'm taking the car to a local speed shot for some Wide-band o2 Dyno tuning. Hopefully before too long, I'll have some dyno #'s !! Money has just be tight lately.

To all Vortec head users:

Use NGK-TR55 plugs !!!! Made a nice difference in power and idle quality.

Car is dirty and bug-gut ridden in this pic, but you get the idea. I'll be fabricating the grill screens this weekend.
