Best scan tool????

I know Jeg's has a Scan tool for like $30. I'm just looking for one that can read codes, and reset them. Are there any that are better then others? Are there any other features that I don't know about? Thanks.

If you want a cheap one- Use a paper clip to read the codes and pull the battart connection to reset them....

If you want a scan tool- search the boards, you'll find some topics about it.

Those $30 devices are not scan tools, they are strictly "SES code readers". A scan tool displays ALL of your sensor readings plus a lot more.

I have Diacom Plus and I like it.

Sorry! Battery connection.
If you only want to read codes, use a paper clip, if you want to read all your sensor readings get a scan tool. I have autoxray its cheap, but if you already have a laptop look closly a www.easesim.com

My90Iroc,

There are many scan tools available for OBDI vehicles like your '90. Check out the following sites:

1) Ease Simulations at http://www.easesim.com
2) Diacom at http:/www.rinda.com
3) Do-it-yourselfer EFI page at http://www.diy-efi.org/
4) Sunpro at http://www.actron.com/sunhome.htm
5) New or used scan tools like those offered by Snap-On and OTC which are often sold at good used prices on the auction sites.

The advantage to owning a scan tool is that you can check all of the the vehicle PCM values yourself. If you can not figure out what is wrong using the scan tool, sometimes others can help by knowing your readings. A lot of times this will save you a $$ trip to the dealer.

The Ease personal version is based upon the Ease Professional version, which is comparable to the GM official tools in capability. In OBDI vehicles like your 89 and 90 there are as many as 63 parameters available. The Ease OBDI scan tool will record up to 60 of those parameters at a time for an unlimited amount of time. It will also automatically do charting of the values against each other. An Ease GM OBDI scan tool will work on all GM OBDI (1982 - 1995) vehicles. The Ease OBDII version works with all GM OBDII vehicles (1996 - 2001).

After you look at the above sites if you decide that you are interested in the Ease Scan Tool, email me directly and I will be glad to send you a complete review including screen captures of the Ease Scan Tool that I use on my OBDI 88. Ease offers tools for OBDI and OBDII. As a rep for Ease, I can get you a rebate of 10% on everything you order through me.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Mike

You can get an AutoXray scanner for $159 from www.partsamerica.com, that's the best price I found for it. I ordered mine 2 days ago.

Just to throw it out for those without a laptop, Auto Xray also makes the EZ Link in addition tot he XP240. The Ez Link differes in that it is OBD1 and OBDII compatible. On mine, I can read my 92Z, my wife's 96T/A RamAir, and my 76 4x4 Blazer 400 TPI ptoject wtih all of my 92'S hardware. I can also read Fords (helps my parents and my Mustang buddies), Chryslers, and most imports.

If you're even possibly thinking of a newer OBDII vehicle down the road, it's worth looking into.

Does anyone know if the PC-Link software with the EZ-Link Pro Pack from auto xray will allow a laptop to monitor several sensors or variables at one time, like Diacom's software, on OBD I and OBD II vehicles?

No. The EZ-Link will store all the information, then the PC-Link downloads it from the handheld unit and allows you to view all the information at the same time and graph it.

I think the big advantage to the EZ-Link is that it very portable, also the EZ-Link is one of the few scanners that offer a special cable for 94-95 Vette's/Camaro's & TA's. I should know I had to shop around for my 94 Vette. If you already have a laptop I would get the software, but even still it's a bit pricey. It's sort of like palms vs laptops.

Anywho, here's a pic of the PClink software, which also alows you to update your scanner to keep it current.
