ok question, if an a/f gauge is inaccurate because all it does is switch from lean/rich, why do they use them for emmisions purposes if they are that innacurate, and why dont all vehicle manufacturs use WB O2? is it because the a/f gauge is measuring one thing, and an O2 sensor for emmisions is measuring a different one? But isnt efficency efficency? This might have already been answered but I might have missed it. I apperciate all the replys.

As for WB O2 sensors, Honda is using one on it's low emissions vehicle and probably more will in the future. While we use a WB O2 sensor for accurate A/F ratios in the 11-13.5:1 range, a WB also provides accurate A/F ratios in the "super lean" area like 16-18:1.
But, as to why they were not used earlier on our cars, the answer is simple. Cost.

They don't use an O2 sensor, they use a gas spectrometer. O2 sensor on ly measures O2. Gas spectometer measures a variety of gases (depending on it's setup), that is why they measure your HC, CO and NOx.

I have heard that when the guage bounces back and forth between extreme rich and extreme lean that you are near 14.7 as accurately measurable by a factory o2 sensor and guage. Is correct?
