I have a set of BFG drag radials I run at the track, 255-50-16 on 16x8 Iroc rims and they fit great, never rub on the street or track.
As far as on the front I really couldn't say for sure.

I too have the 255 BFG drag radials on my stock 16x8 IROC rims with absolutely no probs. I don't think you have to worry about the rears until you get around the 295-315 tire widths. The front's I'm not sure about.

Well this is somewhat broad since different companies manufacture tires with the same displayed width but in actuality they are wider than others. 255 (average sizing) will work just fine on the rear but will rub on the front. Check out www.tirerack.com for specs on tires.

32789RS , I think they hook pretty good, definately better than my street tires , but they're definately not slicks.
As far as wear, I only put them on for my 60 mile drive to the track and back, so after a year of this mine have no noticeable wear. You'd have to ask someone who runs them everyday about that.

I have 255/50/16 on all four corners of my '89 Formula. They will rub a little in front at full lock.
What you might need to do is go to the junkyard and get the plastic inner fender liners for the front that have the indentations to clear the factory 245/50/16 combo.

to answer your question simply and without red tape, yes, they will rub on the front. i have an '87 Formula and im running Pirelli 245ZR-50/16's on all four corners (provides a really mean stance!) and on the front i rub when turned full lock. so i know 255's will surely give problems. my friend has an '89 Formula and he runs 235's with no rubbing whatsoever, so its up to you guy, what ever you wanna put up with, rubbing and slightly increased cornering capability or no rubbing with reduced (albeit slightly) cornering capability.

i wanna go 255's in back cuz that would b the widest tire i would b comfortable with being on a 8 inch rim....and i would go 245's up front cuz im afraid its gonna rub if i go 255's......
and yes i WILL BE looking for traction!......after i ditch the 305 for a 383

SCCA Solo2 is autocrossing, right?
Isn't there more likely of a chance that the tire is going to come off the bead with larger tires (like 265's on 8" rims), and high cornering loads (like in autox)?
Just asking, because I'd love to fit 265's on the back, but would worry about taking an exit ramp too quickly, and backing into a pole @ 90MPH because my tire lef the bead.

Solo2 = Autocross.
Kumho's spec sheet recommends a 9" wheel but states the size range is 8"-10". I have only run them at one autocross event and one drag event so far, but have had no problems. I know some others running the same tires on 8" wheels and haven't heard of any problems from them ether.
