The picture, a few posts above this one, is NOT what my Futura Ultra-Zs look like. Mine have a MUCH more aggressive tread pattern than that. I have been very satisfied with my Ultra-Zs. My '88 GTA gets 25 mpg easily, 14.06 at the track (hope to improve this in April), 2.00s at the 60 ft and ride very acceptably AFTER they warm up a little. The first couple of miles make you think they are out of round but quickly smooth out. When I was deciding on the tires for this car, I was told the Ultra-Zs were made by Cooper and if you go to Cooper's site (as I did last year) they had pictures that looked identical to those on the Pep Boy's site.

Not a bad tire for the money.

Guys (and Gals), I just went to the Pep Boys site and it showed the picture that is posted above. Then I went to the Cooper Tires site and clicked a couple of links to get to the Cobra ZHP. That is the tire I have on my car, branded as Futra Ultra-Zs. I run 245/50-16 on front and 255/50-16 on the rear. My guess is the picture posted above is for one of the smaller sizes. Thanks.

Well if you're taking votes, go to Tirerack and look at ultra high performance tires, or read magazine articles. You'll quickly add up points for the Dunlop Sport 9000's, rated one of the best performance tires period, and THE best performance tire for the money. FACT. Not my opinion. Go read. You'll see.

I am using my ccar for the same purposes as you. I drive in the spring, and summer, but store my car when I am away at college. I bought the Sport 9000's which were recommmeded by two friends who bought them. Not only do they look AWESOME, but they have kiler peformance in EVERY aspect. I did a ton of research before I bought my tires, even after my friends recommendations, and I still came up with the Sport 9000's. It should also be noted that price was not a factor in my case. I just wanted the best.

They handle awesome, I haven't gotten them to slide in a corner yet, and I drive FAST. In the rain, if you floor it and the rear end goes sideways, simply let off the gas and the car will snap back to center, with no oversteer, no matter how hard you try. They are quiet, will last 30,000 miles, don't follow cracks in the road like some other tires, and hook up awesome.

As far as rated performance goes, I skid pad tested them to .93g's before I let off (I didn't want to mess up my rearend). My suspension setup is simply a Stock 87 IROC with these tires. Also, I was racing a C5 Vette on the highway one night (or maybe just messing around with, he'd toast me), and experienced just how good these tires are. We were coming around a corner on the highway at about 120mph (don't try this at home) and I was driving RIGHT behind the vette. His rearend started to slide towards the outside (oversteer). My car was still planted like a slot car. Take that for what you want.

As far as price goes, price wasn't an issue for me, but I shopped around and picked them up for $172 a piece.

Guys, I made a mistake on my previous post. I was working under my car most of today and thought I better check my previous posts. I wrote down the wrong number when I was in the Cooper site. My tires do not look like the ZHPs, more like the GTZs, which if you compare to the original picture above is pretty similar. My mistake. Sorry. Still good tires.

I'm kind of leary to buy firestone because of all their problems, i mean i realize that just because on line of tire is bad doesnt mean they are all bad, but the re730 isnt available in the 255/50/16 and i am hell-bent on getting 255 so it seems the next choice is the sz50's.

thanks for all the replies.

Why are you hell bent on getting 255s? Because you like the extra width? If so, getting Firehawks would be a terrible choice. The 255 Firehawks are barely as wide as a normal 245. The 245 Firehawks look like a Goodyear 225. Very narrow tires, that and the fact that they are made by Firestone are the reasons why I won't buy Firehawks.

I had the firestone firehawks on my 87 turbo thunderbird, and would have swapped the tires to my camaro, but sold the car too fast.

The only problem i had with these tires was nails. They were freakin nail magnets, like 5 patches in each tire. The tires i had on my camaro at first were very tight. but my mom got me tires for christmas one year. bad idea, they suck hard, the sidewalls are so weak i rolled one off the edge of the rim going under 30 in a turn. it was at correct pressure and just rolled off!! (it really sucked too cuz i was leavin the strip club 50 miles away from my house the night before highschool graduation. took 45 minutes to get there, 2 and a half hours home on a donut.) Anyway, these things suck hard, i need to check exactly what they are so i can warn you guys.

They did however have some straight line traction before i stripped em of all their tread. Broke a tranny mount on a launch when it was 110 outside. i was on new blacktop at a light, and floored it. CLUNK!!

I have almost 38k miles on my BF Goodrich Comp T/A ZR's and just ordered another set this weekend. They're almost bald, but I've drag-raced, road-raced, and auto-x'd on these tires for the past 4 years. I even drove in a few inches of snow with 150 lbs. of sand in the back. Last fall, I was pulling 1.9x 60-foot times with just 2400 stall converter behind my internally-stock 305. Chalk up one more recommendation for the ZR's.

Yea, i want wide, i like wide tires, plus more rubber on the ground the more traction, so thanks for the warning, mr j. Well, cross the sz50's off.....

i'm going to get to the bottom of this...

For what it's worth, my vote is for SZ50's.

Some 255 16's are too wide on some 3rd gens. I had a set of michelins that caused severe wheelwell rub in the front to the point it destroyed all of the plastic fasteners and chewed up on the ground effects. Plus, if they're on 16x8 rims, slam the car door and watch the sidewalls flex as the car wiggles.

When I went with the 17x9 rims and the SZ50's they are just as wide (both tread width and carcus width) as the GS-C's or the Comp T/A's on my wife's 96 T/A w/Ram Air.

And I've got a slew of 1.910's to 1.925's on my SZ50's with no problem even with my less than great or practiced skills, and LT1's can certainly get less than 2.1's on them as some source cited.

As far as ride, I have no complaints with the SZ50 ride quality, much less the handling. Mine are pre-EP's.

I've had Michelins that were just plain harsh, Falken's (pre-Zies) that separated at 15k

Just my .03

on the fronts of my maro I'm running Pirelli P700-Z's in 225/50/ZR16. the handling of these basically discontinued tires (on tirerack) is freakin' amazing. I can take corners with absolute confidence. ON the rear I have a bald Goodyear Eagle GS I think. It's an old tire. It's a 245/50/VR16. And on the other side I have a Firestone SZ50 in 245/50/16 that everyone it talking about. Handles well. However I DON'T like the tread patterns of the rear v.s. the front. But then again the pirelli's are Ultra High Perf tires, while the rest seem to just be high perf. SO here's I vote for the Pirelli and one for the Firestones.

The best tires IMHO are the ones w/ no tread on them and are made to go in a str8 line. LOL>>>>>>those are #1 Like M/T E/T's or hoosiers. All traction, no questions asked

I have Pirelli P600's on the front of my 86TA!! 225/55ZR 16!! On the back I have Firestone Firehawk SVX tires! 225/55/16! Both type of tires are great! These 4 tires have lasted me longer than any other tire I've ever bought! I ran the front passenger side tire low for too long so I've got metal showing...so I'm probably just gonna replace all 4 this weekend! The Firehawks are still in decent condition so I'll probably throw them in the garage for some spares!! (Gotta love that stock 14 inch spare)

Just replaced the Pirellis and Firehawks yesterday with Michellin Pilot HX 225/50/16's!! Wow!! First difference I noticed right away was less vibrations at high rpms!! I have a TH350 tranny in my TA right now and with the Pirellis and Firehawks I noticed a really bad vibration at about 3,000 RPMs! These vibrations have disappeared with these Michellin tires!!

I've run thru two sets of 245/50ZR16 SZ50's on my 89RSZZ4TPI. With proper rotation I've gotten about 25K on both sets.
Previous to that I ran GSC's. You can only rotate them front to back and wet handling was not even close to the SZ50s.
SZ50's are absolutely fabulous in the rain.
I also pulled a 1.986 60ft at the track with SZ50's and probably 27lbs of air. Of course my rear suspension is beefed up a little.
My vote is still with SZ50s

the link provided by kevin gives some decent info. in the survey the sz50 ep is ranked the highest with second the re730 and the sz50's in fourth. it looks like that is pretty consistant with our survey although we dont know if all the sz50 votes went for the ep or pre-ep. i realize the numbers are probably not exact and it would be tough to measure anyway but according to tirerack here are a couple examples of the differences in tire width...

bfgoodrich zr 255/50/16 7.7
sz50 255/50/16 8.1
dunlop sport 8000 255/50/16 9.4
goodyear f1 steel 255/50/15 9.6

sz50 ep 245/50/16 7.4
bfgoodrich zr 245/50/16 7.5
re730 245/50/16 8.7
dunlop sport 8000 245/50/16 9.1

My decision is narrowed to firestone sz50 or sz50 ep and the bridgestone re730's. the re730 are the widest of the three, but the ep's which are the narrowest of the three, are the bset according to tirerack's survey.

any comments, especially from those that have thses tires or have had both.

thanks

I have the stone SZ50's on the '99 Hawk, and they are by far the best all around tire I have owned for both wet and dry traction. I have, however, heard a lot of good things about the BFG KD Force tires from my 4th gen friends, and I'll probably try a set of those when I replace the GSCs on the '91 in a couple months.

Well after going to the firestone dealer and finding out that the potenzare730's are going to cost $185ea, Plus waiting for them to order I decided to go to Discount Tire Co. and talk to them. I ended up with BFG Comp T/A V-rated at $130ea. The big thing is that there 275/50/16's! WOW A huge diff. in ride and traction, as well as looks. Im happy!

Firestone Firehawk SZ50 guy here..... The best tire I have ever run, bar none. My tires are the pre-EP versions.

One of my GTAs has the V-rated Eagle GT+4s on it, and I really like them too, but they're not available in the 245/50R16 size anymore.

What surprises me is that I hardly hear BFGs or Nittos come up in theses rankings. I'm all for GM but I noticed that the tires most acclaimed on the Mustang sites use BFGs and Nittos. How come I don't hear more about those tires here (thirdgen)?? What, just b/c they run Ford machines, they use totally different tires??? I was just kinda confused. Anytime there is a discussion about tires, I usually pay attention.

Are there any other suggestions?

I have tried many different tires and the best tires I have ever came accros were Road Hugger GT-D's. I bought them used and they were practicly brand new. I did a small burn out on them at the track and they hooked great and ran a 12.60 @ 108. They also perform great in the corners

Ported plenum
Home made AFPR ($2)
1 5/8 shorty headers
Ram air
255 lph Holley fuel pump
2.5 inch TRUE DUAL exhaust (no cats)
Flowmaster mufflers
4.10 gears
700R4 w/2000 stall
100HP nitrous
Best time before any of these mods:
15.1 @ 91.9
Best time after mods:
12.60 @ 108.3
That is at high alt.

Bridgestone RE730s get my vote.

Pulled a best of 1.988 60' foot on them at the track. They are 255/50/16s and I got them from the TireRack last July for about $112 ea.

Had the Falkien Ziex (245/50/16) on the car before the REs and could only pull a best of 2.0xx with them.

So far the best bang for the buck I've had is with the RE730s. I've had CompTAs, GSCs, and Gatorbacks on the car before and none can come close to the REs.

guys what about the BFG g-force R1's (245-45-16's are $120) They look awesome and are relativly cheap. i think i am going to try them next time. I bought the AVS intermediates agian. Everyone i ahve talked to says they are the best. The sz50 does not grip as well. Mind you i run the same on slicks as i do my street tires.

What about toyo's anyone ever used them. Actually i'm in the market for a set of 245/50/16's also. I'm pretty much set on either re730's ($117) or pirelli supersport ($110). Check out treadepot.com for sweet prices on gy's, toyo's ($119), and pirelli's.

Agreed. I slapped them on my car after doing alot of research and praise from two of my friends. I couldn't be happier.

I don't know fella's, I just upgraded from firechicken 15" x 7"s to IROC Z 16" x 8"s.....WOW!! they had some tires on them, but after the fix-a-flat in one of them, the ride is quite shaky!!they're not so great after being in the JY so long either. from reading this post,I'd go with the re730s,but has anyone checked out consumers reports or any other such sources?? I just thought of doing that last night because $5-600 is a considerable purchase,I don't wan't to race or participate in any kind of reckless driving anymore. I still want my car to be ready for anything, but driving a thirdgen on Navy pay forces me to be more realistic about what I do with my car .

This whole thread was too long for me to go through at work, but if this hasn't been stated, I like the Pirelli P7000's. Good tire for the money, fantastic handling and great in the rain. They aren't noisy and provide very nice ride as well.
