LS1 swap with LT1 radiator

I thought I saw on here that is was a good option. I like the updated fans and the built in steam nipple, but it's smaller than the SBC one and I don't know which hoses to use.

I figure ill use the upper radiator mount from an LT1 car and redrill the isolation mounts, but the hoses I am lost on.

I searched but couldn't find any useful info.

FYI, a new LT1 rad does not come with the required sensor in the end tank. I either have to block it off or find a used on. That totally threw me off seeing an addition gaping hole in the tank.

Re: LS1 swap with LT1 radiator

I thought the lt1 rad was the same size as the 3rd gen rad, and definitely bigger than that ls1 rad....

I've debated it both ways honestly......

Re: LS1 swap with LT1 radiator

For the sensor, you are best off just getting one put in. If I remember right, its D-shaped, not circle-shaped. Trying to clamp a hose and plug on it doesn't work too well but I did it for a while by sticking a cut-up piece of hose it there to make it more circle-shaped.

There is a nipple or maybe drain at the bottom of the LT1 rad, you need to drill a hole in the radiator "tray" on the bottom to make your radiator look level.

I'm a LT1 guy so that's as much as I can help you with.

Re: LS1 swap with LT1 radiator

Thanks Firebat, I noticed that too. I found that when centered, that drain was an issue. When I moved it over to the passenger side it was ok.

The LT1 radiator is roughly an inch narrower, not the end of the world. I put the LT1 fans on the radiator and was stopped dead in my tracks. The fan shroud severely interferes with the power steering rack. It's not even close!

I took the radiator back and ordered a SBC one. I'll use the 3rd gen fans for the time being.

For the record...

SBC Radiator
23 10/16 x 17 1/4 in. 0.87 in. core size, 1.31 in. inlet size, 1.56 in. outlet

LT1 Radiator
24 3/4 x 17 1/4 x 1 3/8 in. core size

Re: LS1 swap with LT1 radiator

Its definitely tricky getting the dual fan assembly in and having room for the ps. I know I had bend the ps line or something to make it work.

Another thing I did was cut off those tabs on the backside of the lt1 radiator. Their only purpose is to hold a 4th gen condensor. That's what really made it fit.

Re: LS1 swap with LT1 radiator

I put the LT1 radiator in my iroc with a 5.3, I just cut the post off the bottom of the radiator and it does take a little bit of wiggling to get the radiator/fan assembly in with the steering box. I'm in the process of getting the LT1 upper radiator support/shroud to work. As for the the coolant level sensor, my moms coolant level sensor went bad in her 2002 impala so I used the bad one to plug up the sensor hole on the LT1 radiator. I'm sure if you post a wanted ad over on LS1 tech, somebody might send you their old coolant level sensor for cheap or even free. Also I bought a coolant bypass cap assortment from the HELP! section at Autozone to plug the nipple that is on the bottom driver's side of the radiator that was used on the LT1 cars for a coolant bypass. I used 4th gen LS1 hoses, they seem to work just fine.

Re: LS1 swap with LT1 radiator

For future reference, here is a labled picture of the LT1 radiator.

1. This nipple is for the coolant overflow tank
2. This nipple is for the steampipe
3. This is the hole for the coolant level sensor
4. This is for the LT1 cars' bypass hose, I capped mine
5. This is the holding post, you can either drill a hole in the radiator core support on the car or you can just cut this off.
