beastly little 305 does it again!

it went against the odds AGAIN!!!!

last night i wanted to go racing. i spent the last two weeks getting the car ready. built a new motor, new rearend, took weight out of the car, worked on my buddies car, everything. i wanted to make sure everything was going to be just right and the car would work up to par. i got everything buttoned up and loaded up and went to my friend's house where he met me with the weather report...RAIN! a racers worst nightmare! we called the track and they had called friday night t/t off for the evening...NOOOOOO!!!!

well, they had a bracket race today and i asked about coming and testing. do to the number of cars they couldn't promise me any more than 3 passes. which was OK cause i need to go to work here in a couple of hours.

got there and waited for a while. got the car prepped and waited...teched in(2910lbs less driver, 3170 with my fat butt in her)...waited...waited...finally! called the class i was to t/t with. i tell you what, it was hotter than hell out today too! 89* and nothing but sun and humidity!

20psi in the tires. burnout, blipped the throttle, pulled to the starting line...no throttle!!! the throttle cable had come off! i was peeved, and very embarrassed, but that was OK...i pushed the car off the track, hooked the throttle cable back up and they let me back in to the burnout box. did a small burnout (as to not over heat the tires) and pulled to the line. spun...HARD! evidentally the second burnout was not necessary and it just made the tires gummy...oh well still ran it out the back door. 2.009 60' time. 13.08@105.6mph! i was pleased with the mph.

went back to the pits and cooled the car down, fixed the throttle cable so as to not embarass myself for a second time (atleast for the same thing, lol!). Called me up, went in the other lane this time, with 18psi in the tires this time. burnout through 2nd, pulled to the line. green flashes and i go! .018 reaction time, not too shabby if i say so myself! i noticed the steering wheel go dead for a moment, did i pull the front wheels off the ground with a 305? my brother claims i did!!! 1.694 60'!!!! go through the traps at 5300rpm with me 3.73 gears and the whole run felt really strong. picked up my timeslip and it was sure enough a 12.503@106.8mph!!!!!!!!!!!

*i'm car number 2*

Impressive, better than the 12.7s that we predicted that you would run based on this thread.

thanks everyone, it's much quicker than i expected...especially after putting 3500miles on the 350 and having much more power. i think that after i get an appropriate set of front wheels (still running stockers) and some cooler air, along with a night that i can really play with it (jetting, carb size, gearing*different tires*) than we may just see some 12.2's/12.3's out of her. i'd like to get close to an 11 second n/a pass, then hit it with the nitrous.

things i can think of that would help:
aluminum electric water pump(i had an electric drive on mine today, but still a cast iron mechanical pump)
electric fuel pump that can supply enough for both the motor and the nitrous
smaller alternator
mini starter
i'd like to swiss cheese the bumper support
tubular k-member and a arms.
maybe go back to the 750 main body

can anyone else think of anything that might help? i was going through the traps at 5300rpms. shift point is 6000, so it could use a little more gear. i have every intention to put together an 8.5" 10 bolt and i have two sets of 4.10's, which i think would help out some.

You might want to put the driver on a diet. You'd be 100 lbs. lighter with me driving. Congrats!

it had 3 sleeves in it, we think the block cracked behind one of them cause i had coolant getting into the oil and not visa versa.

looks good. how much do you think the electric water pump will help? i'm thinkin about gettin one if my car does 13.5's on drag radials/slicks.

and also how much weight do you think you'll lose by swiss cheesin the bumber support

Congrats!!
Impressive combo again! Gotta love a fast 305!

As for the front bumper suppert, just removed mine from the Camaro totally -
With lights still attached only weighed 19 lbs And could probably argue
for 18 lbs. The non ground effects noses are real sturdy without help of bumper, but you do nee for lights - Iwould sawz all the center and ends and basically just leave 2 suppert with the lights attached..

Great job - keep it up!

really, well, i may just keep the supports for the lights like you said, i gotta take it apart and look at it.

i'm runnin' out of time though guys, i leave on tuesday and won't be able to even look at the car till i get back on August 15th. going out right now to finish up some welding, then the car is off to paint monday night and like i said, i won't see it till August. so i have all summer to save up money for hotrod parts and get ideas to take more weight out (as long as it doens't screw up the paintjob!

Don't even fool with the bumper supports. I took them out of my car and it was a total PIA that made no difference in my ET or 60ft.

Great accomplishments here! Hopefully all the other 305 haters around here will see this and think before they open their mouths again. Obviously a 305 is just as good as any other small block so it is time we all treated them the same. Each one has its short comings and strong points but they are all small blocks.

AWESOME TIMES!!!!! I went to a little 1/8th mile track this weekend, pulled up to do my first burnout, and the car died coming out of the water box, refired, and it didn't sound quite right, made a light pass, just to try to feel out what was wrong, missing badly on 1 cylinder, pull back to pits, found a broke rocker arm. Loaded up on trailer and went home, after closer inspection found that 3 more are cracked right at the trunion. I don't know how i didn't notice any of this when i reset my valves 2 weeks ago! Anyway, its back to doing some more work, but not for a few weeks, closing on my house this week, and moving the next 2 weeks, maybe I can get to the track b4 the end of june, just have to wait and see.
BTW what tire were you running?
Once again CONGRATS!!!!!!!

I have been trying to say this for a long time. Hell if a stock bottem end 305, garage ported 601s, comp xtreme energy 274, gasket matched stock aluminum GM Q-Jet intake with moded 1969 Corvette 350 Q-jet, crappy 1 5/8 x 3" headers, 2 1/4" duals, stock 2,000 rpm converter, 3.08 gears and skinny P235/75/R15s would turn 14.8s @ 95 mph in a 5,500# van, imagine what that super cheap combo would do, in even a full weight F-car.

hey KWIK, what rockers were you running?

and i was using a M/T ET Street Radial. 275/60/15's. don't worry about trying to get her done in a hurry, i just dropped mine off at paint tonight and i won't see it again till August 15th, so you got alittle time to try to catch me! good luck with the move, those are a PIA! (military brat here, done that moving thing a few times!

the DA...i don't know honestly but it was 89* and humid

thanks everyone else for the kinda words!

now, i'm not that far...lets see if i can get it into the 11's when the good air comes back in the fall. i hope to have more go-fast goodies, but i think in the form of lighter weight stuff. and i'd like to try the 750 main body out.

Didn't you say that you have a pair of 275/50's ? That would help out your effective gearing a little any way. Rockers were Harland Sharp 1.5 full roller. Hopefully it won't be too bad will be my 2nd home purchase. I am going to try a few diffent things in the coming months to see what i can find in the little engine. I've got a few parts that are setting in a family friends garage that he said i could do a little playing with (he's been building engine's and racing for the past 40 yrs, mostly around in circles though) but he has an unbelievable stockpile of parts!! He wants to take a look at the engine when I go back home in a few weeks. I think he has some big ideas, so we'll see (he has a 650 hp 358 n/a!!) He thinks that with a little work my engine should be good for a round 400, I'd be happy with 350-375 and dropping around 100# off the car. Sux that you won't be running the majority of the summer, but, then again the air isn't the greatest in those months!!

well, my buddy sean has a set of 275/50's that i was going to try. i'm sure he'd let me try them the next time we're out, but i'd like to just go ahead with the 4.10's in the 8.5 (i need to get on the ball with that one.) and keep the taller tire. when i get home, i won't be working my current job (well, today was my last day...so i guess it's not current anymore) so i'll have lots of time with the car. but i'm only home in 1-3 week spurts from August till October, then i'll be home from November till February with a couple 1 week trips in there, then February i'm off to work again. gotta lot of little things i want to try. nothing too crazy before i just go ahead and spray it...i really don't want to put too much money into anything that won't transfer over to the bigger motor, which is what this thing is really kinda all about. getting the most out of nothing...and getting the car setup to handle big power when i get the 383 done...

you broke some harland sharps? wow, think they'll replace them? glad i went with the Comp Pro-Magnums.

New Job, Congrats!!! Hope that it works out well for you. So are you going to be able to race when the car gets out of the B/S?

Probably not on the rockers they are several years old, and have numerous passes on them. Defenitely keep me up to date on the 8.5 build though.

One nice thing with buying the home though will be that the car will not be 2hrs away from me anymore, only have to walk out the back door. New house has a 22x32 garage!!!

i think i'll be in town long enough to make some passes, but if not, there will still be lots of wrench crankin. i'm gonna buy an electric water pump, a ministarter, a mini alt., and some matching front wheels. then i need to glass in some light weight supports on the underside of the hood (it's really flimsy right now).
