Legal Ls1 swap in California... What all is needed?
I know I need the gas tank, and all emissions. What else do I need to make it legal and able to be refereed? I think I remember something about needing the 4th gen dash. Is that true?

Yes that is true, i'm not sure what exactly is all needed but it would probably be better to get a donor car.

you need to use all emissions equipment from the donor car, which also includes from catalytic converter forward. Motor must be in the same vehicle classification as the car it is going in, such as a truck motor can't go into a car nor any of it's emissions parts. Of course a check engine light must work

in order for the emissions to work correctly with the 4th gen tank you will need the gauge cluster from a 4th gen.

You need both cats, 4 o2 sensors, fuel tank with evap, air pump...I think thats it. I will be starting my CA legal swap this November.

How does it control the emissions? If I do the swap, I really dont want to swap dashes. I really like my current black AC delete dash in mint condition I just put in...

If you want the evap AND a fuel gauge to function properly you need the 4th gen cluster. If you do a search, you will find out why. I plan on using only the cluster with my 3rd gen dash like another member has done.

you dont need a 4th gen cluster to pass. I did this swap 4 years ago with my stock cluster and i passed just fine. I dont see how the cluster controls the evap. I used HP tuners, and i was able to turn off and on the evap switch with no issues. all the Ref cares is that you have all the emission stuff in the correct place. and that the car passes the sniffer. No cluster needed to pass.

If you could post some proof that it does work without the cluster would be great news. Can you log with the HPT that the EVAP is being commanded while you are driving?
I was going to add all the wiring in the car when I do my swap regardless whether it actually worked or not.

Are you sure the evap is working properly in the car without the 4th gen cluster? From what a friend and I can gather looking in a 4th gen service manual what you are stating is true, but on the other forums people are saying it wont work without the cluster.

using hp tuners you can turn it on or off. you can also allow it to test but not show a check engine light. since it is a sniffer car they would run the inspection just as they would for the original year of the car. even if they do hook up to the aldl they wont see any issues as it is turned off.

Re: Legal Ls1 swap in California... What all is needed?
I havent messed with my HTP yet so I dont know what it can display, does it have the ability to show when the ECM commands the purge? I think people are saying the ECM wont command the purge unless the LS1 dash is hooked up. I live in NJ and I dont care about the referee, but I left the canister on the tank when I put it in the car for my SBC and I dont see a reason to not use it when I put the LS1 in the car, I just want to know if you have proof that it is being commanded while running
the problem wasnt really the dash t was the fuel level sender. the pcm needs the 4th gen signal or it wont run the evap test. you can tune it out and it will show it passed the evap test when it never did it

I passed the REF test with no issues and passed another smog test 2 years later. No 4th gen dash needed. You will be fine with the swap. Keep trucking bro.

the fuel level sender can be replaced from the 50-240 ohm to a 0-90 ohm for a stocker... the fuel level sender is off a grand prix.. or you can just swap the resistors on the fuel gauge, (not sure if the resistor method though has been 100% tested.. )

You can't change out the sender and still give the PCM the information it needs to operate the emissions systems.

so then what about the member here that didn't use the 4th gen cluster... I am doing an LS3 Erod conversion on my bird in hopefully the next couple of years and was planning on doing the 4th gen dash, just to get a new look, however in the prelim guidelines of the Erod it says nothing about upgrading any clusters, sure the PCM is calibrated differently from those that FBody LS1 PCM, which leads me to believe that the Erod might have certain parameters disabled as was the case with one of our fellow TGO members who smogged their car with the stock cluster... I am just gather as much info as possible...
