the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
I'm kind of proud of this one. It really wasn't that hard to make either.
I'll post more pics when I get it mounted, and if anybody is interested, I took pictures along the way of how I built it

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
by the way it's going right under the dash on the passenger side. I'm going to have to drill 3 small holes on the bottom side of the dash, but it will be worth it

the pullout guts are from a 91-94 cavalier, but I made the mounting tray myself

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
you know, if I had better fabrication tools over here, I could. But when you are hand bending every turn, and cutting every line with a dremel tool, i would have to charge so much for labor most people would think I was nuts.
It was easy though just a little time consuming... when I get it installed I'll post more pics to show the steps

Definitely interested in seeing the final installation and process pics. I've been thinking about going down the same road with a cupholder mounted under the dash on the passenger's side.

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
just picked up the screws to mount it with, so it's going in tonight!
here's a shot from behind. You can see how I mounted the sliding drawer to the 22 gauge steel. I was going to built a ramp and use glue, but at the last minute I decided to use 1" screws near the front, and 1 1/2" at the back, where it narrows a little, and the gap is larger

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
Looks good!
Is the sheetmetal mounting bracket/tray the only thing you had to build, to use that slide-out tray?
How hard is it to pull out the whole slide-out assembly, from a junk yard Cavalier?

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
yeah, they tray was the only thing i made. it would have been easier if i had good fabrication tools.
it was easy to take the drawer out of the cavalier. the dash
cover peals back, abd then the drawer has just 4 clips hoding it in, which you can see in the photo i posted of it by itself
you can also get the drawers on ebay, and if it has broken clips, no worries, they aren't needed with this project

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
Pretty cool.
I have access to a CNC table router, to cut the plate out of, or using a stomp shear & a sheet metal bender, which would make quick work of making those 4, 90 degree bends.
I've wanted a dual cup slide out tray, to fit under my dash pad, directly above the radio.....Hmmmmm......

holy cow!
if i had all of that, i would have made 100 of them by now, ans sell them here on tgo for $20 a pop. let the masses scare up their own sliding drawer locally, but you do the hard stuff

You send me a paper/cardboard/printable template (to get all the dimensions from) & I'll go see about getting some cut & bent up!
A single 4' x 8' sheet of aluminum or steel (cheaper), would make a BUNCH of those!

it was only 3 small holes, and it's on the undernside of the dash, so they would never be seen, even if for some reason I ever decide to take it off

spray on truck bedliner... it matches the dash pretty well. Don't spray heavy, this stuff does NOT react well to heavy coats

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
here's a step by step I wrote up for NTTGA
here's some pics of the thing in progress...
first pic, I took 22 guage steel and bend, cut and shaped it to the form of the cupholder that I pulled from the 93 cavalier
then I used both 1 inch and 1 1/2 inch bolts to secure the cupholder to the mount in a way that allowed me to adjust the tilt so it would be level when installed
i had to adjust the rounded face when all of this was done

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
I used "u" type nuts to secure it to the dash by drilling three small holes on the underside of the dash, and I used one existing hole where the dash pad attaches to the dash
and that's it! pretty easy, even for a guy that didn't have any kind of serious fabrication tools except a dremel tool and a vise.

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
VERY nicely done! Did you look at installing it directly under the center vents? I'm wondering how well it would fit there because I'm thinking it could look good and be very functional there.

yeah, I wanted to put it there, but it's just a little too wide, and I also thought it may not be a good thing to have the drinks blocking the vents (but at least the AC could keep your drink cold LOL )
thanks for the compliments!

Very nice, wouldn't mind one of those, myself. Lack of a cup holder is actually one of the more annoying things about Camaro design. I'm surprised there's never been much on the aftermarket for it.

I'm no Cowboy fan, the only reason I have a cup is because my son's high school had a playoff game in the new stadium. Even if you don't like the cowboys, it's hard to argue with the fact that the pace is amazing.

Not at all. My head is still taller than the cup, so i'm looking down on it.
I do have to be careful of how tall a cup i use, they can dump over when i take a fast turn

That is my main concern here I hate stuff being in my line of vision. Great idea here but I wonder if there would be a better place to mount it. Right off I can't think of one. I guess for me I'll have to stick to bottled pop.

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder
here you go, as you can see from the first pic, with a can, vision isn't an issue at all.
I found the tallest cup I had, one that's really taler than anything I would ever use on the road. I guess technically it's slightly in front of the window. Considering where it is, compared to how much the rear view mirror and inspection stickers block more important parts of the windshield, it's a non factor to me.

agreed...
the cans are fine, but tall cups that have that "car friendly" bottom to them tend to take a tumble in this type of cupholder. these kind I have pictured here is fine though
ones like this I will NOT use again

Great job on the fabrication, and a neat project to be sure. Neat, cool, functional, practical, and it looks as good as a factory job in my humble opinion.
Thanks for the idea, all the good pics, the explainations, material list, and a great way to personalize our cars with a useful and unique idea. Well done bro and thanks for sharing it with us. My hats off to you.
