I didn't like my 40 series at all but I really do like the sound of the race 30 series, there not nearly as loud, have a great tone and hardly any interior resonance. To each his own I guess.

I don't know about a school bus, but F'Masters aren't my favorite sound.
I kinda like that quiet tin can rumble that doesn't pop when you floor it.
I used to have a 66 327 Impala with 14 inch cherry bombs on it, once burned out they sounded great crusing around, but got loud and cackly when I would hit the gas.

My firebird sounds horrible with flowmaster, not to mention they are rotting away horribly, so they're not as durable as they could be. I've been told that the edlebrock exaust sounds great, anyone ever use it?

The 80 series that was on my stock '82 LG4 (2-1/4", cat) sounded great.

The 80 series that was on my hopped up 305 and 350 (3", cat and no cat) was just noisy.

Re: i hate flowmasters

I had a 30-series with a resonator, and it sounded decent, but it was a little restrictive. The backpressure went up to around 6-8 PSI at WOT. My 22" hooker maximum flow is actually slightly quieter even though its a striaght through design. That, and it doesnt drone at certain RPMs like the flows do.

Re: i hate flowmasters

I and others liked the Force II system at first on a mild setup.

Once you start making serious power, the highway drone may get out of hand.

Anything with a tall converter, IMHO, will have a nasty, raspy drone at highway speeds (4500 RPM's or so) with the flowmasters.

There are much less restrictive mufflers out there anyway, such as the straight through Magnaflows. They have a much mellower tone (at 4-4500) and make more average and over all power.

Just my personal experience/2cents.

Re: i hate flowmasters

I had 2 4-=series on my 97 Tahoe's dual exhaust & loved them. Had a 40-series on my 92 RS & my wife's 90 RS....Loved them too.

Only reason I have Magnaflow on my GTA now, is because that is what was on there when I bought the car.

I've considered switching it out for a Flowmaster. It's just TOO quiet for me.

Re: i hate flowmasters

I had a Flowmaster 40 on my 350 Camaro and it was loud and had that rattle or truck sound that I didn't like. When I put new tail pipes on I went to the Magnaflow #14267, that is with 3" Inlet and 2.5" dual Outlets. Has a lot deeper tone and sound more like the old muscle cars. The power seems the same and the sound hasn't changed after about 2000 miles. Each his own I guess, but I like it and now I don't alarm the neighborhood in the mornings when I start it up.

Re: i hate flowmasters

I've got a Magnaflow muffler on my 87' 350 GTA.....No complaints, been told that they flow better then Flowmaster......Don't know if its a fact or not!

A buddy of mine had Borla on his 98' 350 T/A, it sounded really nice!

IMO, the only way to really know what sounds best on our car's, is to compare side by side at a car show/meet using 2 fairly identical car's with different muff's!

Re: i hate flowmasters

Yeah I'm not a huge Flowie fan myself. I don't really hate them, but a lot of the cars I have been in with 40 series tend to have that drone problem and that just hurts my ears. I've got a set of longtube headers, 2 1/2" full dual pipes and a pair of Thrush Super Turbo mufflers. Yeah they're kinda cheap, but the car sounds awesome. Mild but solid at idle, and there just aren't words to describe WOT past 2500 rpms.

Re: i hate flowmasters

When I first got my Camaro, I reallyyy wanted a magnaflow, but I got a free Flowmaster crossflow(now i even have another spare, haha) and im glad i didnt get a magnaflow!

You can BARELY hear it inside the car at any rpm, and has a very nice tone outside, not too loud.

every i see that i have passed cant believe my engine is stock either

Re: i hate flowmasters

It just comes down to personal taste. I DO NOT like the sound of most borla or magnaflow exhausts. Every once in a while, I'll hear one that I do like though.

I had a stock 305 '92 that I put the flowmaster 3 inch 80 series setup on, with no cat. It sounded great and was not bad at all inside the car. My brother has the car now, and it still sounds the same and is holding up fine.

My favorite setup is the OLDER Edelbrock system. Not too loud, not too quiet, just a nice smooth rumble. I have installed on two of my cars years ago.

On my current car, I bought it with a really old Flowmaster crossflow (smaller than 80 series). It was loud, but sounded good, when the motor was stock. After modifying the car, it became louder and more raspy/rattly at higher rpm. So, I bough another Edelbrock system as in the past. Same part#, but came with a different muffler and long polished (very nice) tips. It ended up being even louder than the old style flowmaster. Sounds better, but it is not nearly as quiet as the old stlye. It sounds very racy.

Re: i hate flowmasters

well, i think the sound is ok, but the flow numbers SUCK....they are one of the most restrictive exhaust muffler on the market, I was shocked by that when I saw the numbers. Hookers have best numbers, starting with maxflow then aerochamber. The only ones that flowed worse than flowmasters were stock and believe it or not, glass packs.

Re: i hate flowmasters

I put my 3" Flowmaster system on last winter and I really like the sound albeit, it can get a drone at some rpm's when highway driving, but when I go into overdrive and push the rpm down. It really gets peoples attention when you go to full throttle for sure. When I do a smokey burnout with the 406, it lets you know I am there. I just ordered a set of Hedman longtubes to take the shorty Hedmans off. I am going to wrap them to help bring the underhood temps down since these cars have very little room for heat to escape. I also odered a Magnaflow universal Y connector to tie everything together. I will have an exhaust shop make the connection from the collectors to the Y after I get it all figured out. Wonder how much the sound will change when done.

true....that's just what they tested.....pretty much would be same results but of course with more flow.
did you notice the difference between the 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 straight pipe.....a ton of cfm....now imagine a 1/2" jump up to 3" or even 3 1/2" (I run that and couldn't see it fitting any larger)....

I have a Flowmaster American Thunder cat back (80 series muffler) 3 in. pipe with a Magnaflow high flow cat and I get compliments all the time. I like it allot. Hears a link to a page of all Flowmasters mufflers and it also shows the internal components. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...atAOJi8D1Awand And here's a video link to a 80 Flowmaster http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDDJiJhEJJM&NR=1 and here's one to a Magnaflow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wi40rYz2lPU here's one to a Powerstick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TkhsB3TGio&NR=1 and here's one to a Spintech http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...ew_Exhaust.swf Heres Borla http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLfLbFlG2dQ Enjoy. By the way I did not like the Flowmaster 80 series muffler tips sticking out from the rear of my car so i cut them back about 3in. and they tuck in nicely now.Im also getting the rolled tips soon.

Flowmasters are my favorite and all of the best sounding cars that I've heard have had them. They flow good enough to support ALOT of HP, everyone thinks they need 1,000cfm for some reason.

did you notice the difference between the 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 straight pipe.....a ton of cfm....now imagine a 1/2" jump up to 3" or even 3 1/2" (I run that and couldn't see it fitting any larger)....
You can fit a 4", Mufflex makes one and a friend on mine has it on his 92. Sounds MEAN!

Exactly, I don't see any issues with the flow numbers on my flowmaster but I know I'm not pushing the limits of my system as of yet. Also, sound wise, mine really doesnt sound like a "typical" flowmaster. I like the way mine sounds and it gets better everytime I put something new on to increase HP.

An exhaust that you can easily stick you arm down is pretty cool IMO.

4" is overkill for 99% of Camaros.......

From LS1tech......For instance, a 700hp engine may have a dyno-optimized 3.75-inch diameter collector. This diameter, in conjunction with the length used, results in the system “tuning in” at the desired rpm. But from the standpoint of flow, a 3-inch pipe from each bank would be capable of handling all of such an engine's flow requirements.

Agreed. But a single 4-inch wouldn't equal a true duel 3-inch system right?

Re: i hate flowmasters

The lo3 92 Firebird I had in high school sounded good with the american thunder system. I think every ford probe gt in town thought I was running some big inch small block because the car sounded fast and they all wanted to race me. Then they all felt pretty dumb when they found out it was a 170 hp car with 160,xxx miles. Of course I was a little dumb for street racing, but thats another discussion. But my 92 B4C has a flowmaster muffler and I think I sound like crap. I was thinking about the Hooker catback. Has anybody tried it, what I sounds like? Ryan

Trust me, the car definitely falls into that 1%. The car the exhaust is on, it is warranted.

Not all Flowmasters sound that way. There are some 9 and 10 sec cars around here that don't sound to bad at all with them. And I would know because my car would alway's be behind them, never in front of them.

Re: i hate flowmasters

I honesty think it depends on the cubic inch of the motor, or the size of cam
as far as how things will sound. iv heard first hand my own cars, cars at car shows, race tracks etc. smaller engines like the 305 sound like disease trucks with a stock cam and a flow master. a 305ci motor with a stock cam configuration sounds more amazing with a glass pack style muffler but on the other hand a camed 305 will sound better with a flow master style muffler, but will also still sound great with a glass pack too.
