check engine light code 24
Wrong Title Should have been Code 24
Well 2 days ago my speedo cable snapped, just about the same time my check engine light come on with code 24. so i replaced the cable today, and am still getting the code after driving the car. Where do i start diagnoising this problem? Trickster I'm sure you have a diagram that will help. Thanks

When the cable breaks or it is disconnected it sets the VSS code. A couple of things happen with that, the trans torque lock fails to operate and the EGR malfunctions. It is a hard code and will take several run cycles to clear on it's own. Simply disconnect the ECM pigtail or the battery for at least 30 seconds then hook back up. The code should then clear.

Is your dash a digital or non-digital setup? Also have you tried disconnecting the battery to clear the codes to see if they re-appear?

T, I think he damaged the wires out of the speedo head perhaps when replacing the cable. There are 2 very fine wires coming out the back of the speedo as I recall. It's a classic symptom of no VSS signal from the speedo especially since it happened right after the cable broke. The hall generator is in the speedo head then goes to the buffer for amplification and pulse shaping. Double check the back of the speedo, I'll wager thats where it is. And, that symptom(SES) will not occurr until after about 10 min of driving.
