code 41 from an 87 trans am

well i just baught this car and seen all the vacume lines not hooked up and the egr solenoid wasnt even on. i thought thatd be the problem but when i run the codes all i got besides the normal code 12 was code 41 and according to my camaro book for 82-92 which im guessing should be the same for a trans am it says i either have a bad memcal or ecm. is there anyway i can tell for sure which it is? i dont think any auto parts stores can test ecms or memcals around here.

If you have a code 41 and your car is a TPI. It means "CYLINDER SELECT ERROR" and deals with the engine grounds to the ECM. The things to check are the ECM connections and the ground to the engine. Maybe this will help.

That would be a safe bet. check the grounds at the back of the cylinder heads. That is where they connect, if the connection is good then one or more of the wires is broken.

I had a cyclinder select error when my memcal was not attached to my chip adapter well.
If you have an adapter in there, check that. If its a stock setup then maybe a memcal problem.
Just thought I'd drop that note.

i just got an ecm and memcal off a member here and it turned out to be the ecm. i put the other memcal from my ecm in and it worked fine no errors or ses light. the cars running great now. it still has a slight miss but i think thats due to bad plugs and tiny wires (maybe 6.5mm) so im getting some new plugs and wires tomarrow and it should be a lot better.
